Open the stream’s YouTube watch page and check whether YouTube presents it as live now. Treat that as the strongest viewer-side clue, not a guarantee: a repeating ambience video, active chat, or moving playback by itself cannot prove that the channel is still broadcasting. If you own the stream, check its status and health in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Check the watch page first
On YouTube, find the stream’s watch page and look for its current live presentation. YouTube describes live streams as media broadcast in real time and directs viewers to its Live area to browse current streams. A loop may repeat the same rain, fire, or sleep ambience footage while the broadcast continues, so the repeated visual content is not a live-status test. [YouTube Help: Watch live streams – Computer; Learn about live streams]
Distinguish broadcast status—whether the creator is still sending a live stream—from playback state—whether your player is moving, paused, buffered, or behind the live point. Those states can differ.
Use chat as supporting evidence, not proof
Live Chat can provide context: viewers may be discussing what is happening as they watch. But chat is a feature of both live streams and Premieres, and its presence does not establish that a looped image is newly captured or that a broadcast is still being sent. Participation may also be restricted by the stream’s settings. Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players, so an embed without chat tells you little either way. Check whether you are behind the live point
YouTube DVR can let viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. If you joined late or moved backward, the video may be playing normally but not showing the current moment. DVR features may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so the playback controls can vary on very long broadcasts. [YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams]
If the stream looks frozen, check playback and connection
A still image or apparent delay does not necessarily mean the creator stopped broadcasting. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between an encoder or camera capturing an event and that event appearing in the stream. Lower latency can make buffering more likely, and network congestion can delay live programming even when your connection otherwise seems adequate. - If playback is paused or has been rewound, resume or move to the live edge if YouTube offers that option.
- If the image appears stuck, allow for buffering, then reload the watch page or check playback again.
- If you are watching an embedded player, open the stream’s YouTube watch page to see its live presentation and any available chat.
Reload and check whether the item is a replay
Reload the watch page if the status is unclear, then check the channel’s listing. A live stream may remain available as a replay after it ends; YouTube presents replays as videos. Confirm that YouTube still presents the item as live rather than inferring an active broadcast from a repeating segment or continuous playback. [YouTube Help: Watch live streams – Computer]
If you run the channel, check Live Control Room
For a creator, YouTube’s documented stream-health and status information is in Live Control Room. Viewers do not have an equivalent definitive status panel in the official guidance cited here. If you need to confirm whether your own encoder or cloud service is still sending the broadcast, use the creator-facing status rather than judging by the loop on the public watch page.
