Best Video Codec for Live Streaming: H.264 vs. HEVC vs. AV1

H.264 is the compatibility-first default for many live streams, but the right codec depends on destination support, bitrate, HDR, and the full delivery chain.

For most live streams, H.264/AVC is the safest default when compatibility matters most. There is no codec that is best for every stream: check the destination’s current ingest requirements first, then weigh available upload bandwidth, viewer playback support, HDR needs, and whether your encoder can handle the codec in real time. HEVC/H.265 and AV1 are options when the complete streaming path supports them and their efficiency is useful.

How to choose a live-streaming codec

A codec compresses video for transmission and playback, but its name alone does not determine the final picture quality. The destination must accept the codec at ingest; the encoding hardware or software must be able to produce it reliably; and the service’s packaging and playback chain must support it. A more efficient codec is of little help if one link in that chain rejects it.

  1. Check the platform’s current ingest rules. Do not assume that support on one service means support on another, or that an encoder’s ability to produce a codec means the destination accepts it.
  2. Match the codec to your upload capacity and stream format. Account for resolution, frame rate, audio, and network headroom. Use the platform’s recommended bitrate for the chosen mode, rather than treating a codec as a substitute for adequate upload bandwidth.
  3. Check the encoder and delivery path. Confirm real-time encoding capability and, where applicable, container, packaging, and playback support.
  4. Consider HDR and latency only when they apply. HDR may narrow the supported choices; keyframe interval and other settings affect startup and playback behavior.
  5. Test a representative segment before going live. Include typical movement and audio, and check for dropped frames, buffering, and the result on relevant viewer devices.

There is no controlled, same-content benchmark here that establishes a universal quality winner across encoders and platforms. Actual results depend on the encoder implementation, settings, available bitrate, and visual complexity of the content.

H.264, HEVC, or AV1?

Codec When it fits What to verify
H.264/AVC Compatibility-first streaming or a destination that explicitly requires it. YouTube Live and Amazon IVS document H.264 ingest. At matching modes in YouTube’s recommended bitrate table, H.264 figures are higher than HEVC/AV1 figures. That does not by itself predict the quality of a particular encoder or scene.
HEVC/H.265 A destination documents support and the workflow benefits from its bitrate efficiency or HDR capability. YouTube’s cited live guidance recommends HEVC for HDR. Check the ingest protocol, container, packaging, encoder, and playback support for the exact path you intend to use.
AV1 A destination and all downstream components document support, particularly when bandwidth efficiency matters. Support is not universal across ingest and packaging paths. YouTube’s cited live guidance does not support AV1 for HDR; AWS MediaPackage v2 supports AV1 output only for CMAF endpoint types, not TS endpoints.

Apple’s HLS authoring specification lists AVC, HEVC, Dolby Vision, and AV1 among accepted video encodings for Apple-device HLS authoring. That broad list is not enough to establish specific profile, packaging, or device-version requirements; check the specification for your actual workflow before relying on it.

YouTube Live settings by codec

YouTube Live’s encoder guidance documents H.264, HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. The following are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates for the listed modes, not universal minimums:

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or HEVC H.264
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
4K/2160p at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. Use the value for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send; do not apply it to another platform or mode. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers using different devices and networks. For 4K/2160p, its guidance says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable and the stream is optimized for quality at normal latency.

HDR on YouTube

YouTube’s live guidance recommends 10-bit HDR using HEVC over RTMP(S), or HLS if the encoder does not support the needed RTMP capabilities. The same guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm the current requirements for your encoder and delivery method before configuring an HDR stream.

Other documented platform and delivery constraints

Amazon IVS

Amazon IVS documents H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, with RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest. Its streaming configuration guidance recommends CBR rather than VBR: bitrate spikes can lead to dropped frames before ingest or buffering at the player. IVS generally recommends a two-second keyframe interval. A one-second interval can reduce startup time, but may lead to more frequent adaptive-bitrate resolution changes and increased buffering; IVS advises against intervals above five seconds. Consult its service guidance for resolution- and channel-specific bitrate and encoding settings.

AWS Elemental encoding and packaging

AWS Elemental MediaLive documents AV1, H.264/AVC, and HEVC/H.265 encoding, with rate-control choices depending on codec. Its guidance describes CBR as holding a specified rate, potentially trading away quality as scene complexity changes, and QVBR as targeting quality subject to a maximum bitrate. This is managed-service guidance, not a universal live-streaming requirement. AWS notes that visually complex material needs more bitrate to maintain high quality.

AWS announced live AV1 encoding support for Elemental MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaTailor, and MediaConvert on September 12, 2024. AWS says AV1 can provide a lower bitrate with a similar viewing experience compared with HEVC and AVC, reducing bandwidth and CDN costs; treat that as AWS’s stated claim, not a universal independently verified benchmark. MediaPackage v2 documents AV1 in CMAF input/output workflows and says AV1 output is limited to CMAF endpoints; it will not appear on TS endpoints. Verify every stage of a managed workflow.

Twitch and other destinations

Codec acceptance and recommended settings can change. The Twitch broadcasting-guidelines material cited here did not establish current codec acceptance, so verify Twitch’s official guidance before selecting a codec for a Twitch broadcast. Do not extrapolate YouTube, IVS, Apple HLS, or AWS support to another platform.

Settings that matter alongside codec choice

  • Bitrate control: Follow the destination’s advice. YouTube Live and Amazon IVS recommend CBR for the settings covered above. AWS Elemental’s managed encoding workflows also describe QVBR for quality constrained by a maximum bitrate.
  • Keyframes: Use the platform’s interval recommendation. YouTube specifies two seconds and no more than four seconds; IVS generally recommends two seconds, allows one second for lower startup latency with tradeoffs, and advises against intervals above five seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Set them to the intended output mode and ensure the chosen bitrate and encoder can sustain them. A high resolution or frame rate does not guarantee a clean stream if the upload connection or encoder is overloaded.
  • Content complexity: Fast movement, fine detail, and busy scenes can require more bitrate to preserve quality. AWS specifically notes the trade-off between bitrate and quality for visually complex video.
  • HDR and bit depth: Confirm support across the encoder, ingest protocol, packager, and player. For YouTube HDR, use the current HEVC-oriented guidance rather than assuming ordinary SDR codec support implies HDR support.

Troubleshooting codec and stream problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
The platform rejects the stream or shows no video Codec, ingest protocol, container, or endpoint may not be supported together. Compare the exact configuration with the destination’s current encoder documentation. Check the entire packaging path, not just the encoder’s supported codecs.
Video is choppy or frames are dropped The encoder may be overloaded, upload capacity may be insufficient, or variable bitrate spikes may be problematic for the ingest path. Test at the intended resolution and frame rate with representative content; check encoder load and available upload bandwidth; follow the platform’s bitrate-control recommendation.
Viewers experience buffering or frequent quality changes Bitrate may be too demanding for the connection or playback conditions; keyframe choices can also affect adaptive switching. Check the platform’s recommended settings and test on representative networks and devices. For IVS, note its warning that a one-second keyframe interval can increase adaptive-bitrate switching and buffering.
HDR does not work as expected The codec, bit depth, ingest protocol, or packager may not meet the platform’s HDR requirements. For YouTube Live, check the current 10-bit HEVC guidance and RTMP(S)/HLS requirements; AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance.
AV1 output is missing from a delivery endpoint The endpoint type may not support the AV1 output workflow. For AWS MediaPackage v2, use a documented CMAF endpoint for AV1 output; AV1 does not appear on TS endpoints.

Keeping a YouTube stream live without leaving a computer on

If the goal is to keep prerecorded video looping on YouTube around the clock, codec selection is only one part of the job. A local encoder or computer must remain available for a do-it-yourself stream; choose a supported ingest format and follow YouTube’s current settings. For a cloud-run alternative, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
