Start with Wim Wenders’s Until the End of the World. It is the clearest match for viewers who want an actual cross-continent journey and a story in which dream images begin to intrude on waking life. From there, choose David Lynch’s Wild at Heart for volatile lovers-on-the-run melodrama, Lost Highway for an uncanny highway nightmare, or Wenders’s more grounded Road Trilogy for poetic travel without the same level of menace.
This is a curated list of films with surreal or dreamlike qualities and a meaningful connection to journeys, roads or movement. “Surrealist” is used descriptively here: the available sources do not establish every title as a historical Surrealist movement film.
How these films balance road travel and dream logic
A road movie normally gives the viewer a legible path: a departure, a sequence of places and some kind of arrival. Dream cinema weakens that contract. Time can fold, identities can change, destinations can lose their importance and images may carry emotional meaning without a literal explanation.
The recommendations below are separated by three practical questions:

- What emotional temperature should you expect? The list moves from expansive and contemplative to violent, nightmarish and radically unstable.
| Film | Journey on screen | Dream disruption | Tone and runtime information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Until the End of the World (1991) | Very literal: a pursuit that crosses continents | Dream images are brought into waking life through a mysterious device | Expansive, romantic and meditative; Criterion Channel lists a 287-minute director’s cut, while the Wim Wenders Stiftung describes it as 4 1/2 hours |
| Wild at Heart (1990) | Literal: lovers flee through the American South | Heightened Americana turns the escape into a dark fantasy | Volatile, erotic and violent; runtime not stated in the cited source |
| Lost Highway (1997) | Partial: highways and travel are central images, but not a conventional trip narrative | Extreme: identity, chronology and genre become unstable | Uncanny, noir-inflected and frightening; runtime not stated in the cited source |
| Wenders Road Trilogy | Literal and observational journeys, varying by film | Subtle: visual poetry and emotional transformation rather than horror | Grounded, patient and humane; individual runtimes not stated in the cited source |
| Mulholland Dr. (2001) | Limited: Los Angeles movement rather than a road-trip structure | Very strong: memory, performance and identity slide into one another | Dream logic first, road movie second; runtime not stated in the cited source |
Until the End of the World: the strongest road-movie and dream-film hybrid
Why it is the best starting point
Wenders conceived Until the End of the World as a large-scale journey. Claire travels across continents while pursuing a mysterious stranger and the device he carries. That device is not merely a science-fiction gadget: it allows dream images to enter waking life, giving the film a literal mechanism for the collision between travel narrative and dream cinema.
The Wim Wenders Stiftung’s official film page calls it “the ultimate road movie.” The phrase captures the film’s ambition, but not its viewing conditions: this is a long, digressive work whose emotional payoff depends on allowing the characters’ detours to accumulate.
How the dream element works
The film does not begin as an abstract puzzle. You can follow Claire’s movements, the changing countries and the people she meets. Gradually, however, recorded dreams become part of the characters’ waking relationships. The technology turns an inward experience into something that can be viewed, shared and potentially abused. That keeps the film anchored to a physical journey even as its images become increasingly interior.
Which version to seek
Runtime information differs between two official pages. The Criterion Channel’s current film page lists a 287-minute director’s cut. The Wim Wenders Stiftung describes the same director’s cut as 4 1/2 hours and notes that Wenders made it two years after the original release. The difference is wording between source pages rather than a reason to assume one number applies to every release. Check the edition’s listed runtime before planning a viewing; a four-and-a-half-hour commitment is materially different from a conventional feature.

Wild at Heart: lovers on the run in a feverish America
The road setup
David Lynch’s Wild at Heart gives you the most immediately recognizable escape narrative on this list. Lula and Sailor flee through a menacing South, moving from one precarious stop to another while trying to preserve their relationship. The travel is not incidental; it supplies the film’s basic pressure and its recurring images of cars, motels, roads and impulsive departures.
Why the journey feels surreal
Lynch heightens the road movie’s familiar Americana until it becomes unstable. Romantic gestures, pop-cultural references, sudden violence and grotesque encounters coexist without settling into a single realistic register. Criterion describes the film as a dark dreamscape of danger, desire and fantasy. That description is a useful tone warning: the movie emphasizes violence and depravity as much as romance.
How intense is it?
Wild at Heart is more volatile than Until the End of the World. Its lovers’ devotion is sincere, but the world around them is predatory and often cruel. Expect abrupt tonal changes rather than a smooth, lyrical travelogue. If you want a road film in which the couple’s momentum is exhilarating and frightening at the same time, this is the direct choice.
Edition note
Criterion’s page lists a 4K UHD plus Blu-ray edition as available November 17, 2026, a date after the source page’s research timestamp. Availability can change, so verify the current release status before buying or planning around that edition.

Lost Highway: the most disorienting highway dreamscape
Do not expect a conventional trip
Lost Highway is the recommendation for viewers who want the road as a psychological and cinematic space rather than as a route between destinations. Highways, cars and nocturnal travel matter, but the film does not provide the reassuring progression of a start, middle and arrival. Its identities and timelines are unstable; the sensation of driving somewhere can be more important than where anyone is going.
The Criterion Collection describes it as “one of the filmmaker’s most potent cinematic dreamscapes.” The same description places the film in postmodern noir that enters science-fiction territory. That combination explains why it belongs on this list while also requiring a qualification: it is a less literal road movie than Until the End of the World or Wild at Heart.
What kind of uncertainty to accept
The film asks you to tolerate unresolved changes in identity and causality. Explanations that would stabilize a conventional mystery are repeatedly displaced by new images, sounds or perspectives. Watching it as a puzzle with one guaranteed solution can make the experience frustrating. Watching it as a nightmare that keeps changing its rules makes the highway imagery, noir textures and science-fiction intrusions cohere emotionally even when they do not resolve factually.
Who should choose it
- Choose it if atmosphere and dread matter more to you than a clearly mapped itinerary.
- Choose it after Wild at Heart if you want to see Lynch remove most of the romantic road-movie scaffolding.
- Skip it as a first pick if you need stable protagonists, linear chronology or a destination that explains the journey.

Wim Wenders’s Road Trilogy: the grounded counterweight
The three films
Wenders’s Road Trilogy consists of Alice in the Cities, Wrong Move and Kings of the Road. Criterion presents them as films about emotional transformation and searches for self, rendered through visual poetry. They are the right branch for viewers who want open-road texture but do not want nightmare violence or radical narrative dislocation.
Alice in the Cities
The film uses travel and an unexpected companionship to examine responsibility, observation and the difficulty of knowing another person. Its movement through cities and landscapes remains recognizable, while the emotional meaning of those places changes as the relationship develops.
Wrong Move
Wrong Move is less a chase than a movement toward self-understanding. Travel places a searching protagonist among other people whose ideas and desires redirect him. The film’s poetic qualities come from encounters, pauses and shifting perspectives rather than from supernatural events.
Kings of the Road
Kings of the Road offers the trilogy’s most sustained sense of road space. Its journey is patient and observational, allowing landscapes, machines and conversation to carry as much weight as conventional plot. For a viewer who finds Lynch’s volatility exhausting, this is a useful reset: the road remains strange because of what the travelers feel, not because reality repeatedly breaks.

When to choose the trilogy
- Pick it when you want contemplative travel and character development.
- Use it as a companion to Until the End of the World to see Wenders move between grounded road observation and speculative dream imagery.
- Do not approach it expecting the violent fantasy of Wild at Heart or the identity ruptures of Lost Highway.
Mulholland Dr.: an adjacent dreamlike Los Angeles choice
Why it is not a direct road-movie match
Mulholland Dr. belongs on an adjacent list rather than in the center of a road-movie ranking. Criterion’s description focuses on Hollywood, an aspiring actor and an amnesiac woman. The film’s movement through Los Angeles supplies geography and atmosphere, but its primary subject is the instability of performance, ambition, memory and identity—not a cross-country journey.
Why road-film viewers may still respond to it
The film turns Los Angeles streets, apartments, studios and night drives into a dream system. Scenes can feel like destinations even when they are really shifts in consciousness. If what you loved in Lost Highway was the way a city and its roads became a mental landscape, Mulholland Dr. is a natural next step. If you specifically want lovers fleeing together or a route that structures the plot, choose one of the more literal recommendations first.
Choose your next film by the experience you want
| If you want… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A genuine international journey with dream imagery | Until the End of the World | The physical pursuit and the dream-recording device are built into the same story. |
| Romance, danger and outlaw momentum | Wild at Heart | The lovers-on-the-run structure remains clear even as the tone becomes fantastical and violent. |
| A highway nightmare with unstable identity | Lost Highway | Travel becomes noir atmosphere and psychological disorientation rather than a reliable itinerary. |
| Poetic roads without Lynchian brutality | Wenders’s Road Trilogy | The films emphasize emotional change, observation and visual poetry. |
| Hollywood dreams and fractured selfhood | Mulholland Dr. | It is a strong dream-film choice set in Los Angeles, but not a conventional road movie. |
A practical viewing order
- Begin with Until the End of the World if you are unsure how much abstraction you want. Its geography gives you a stable entry point while the dream material expands.
- Watch Wild at Heart next if you want the road to become more dangerous, erotic and excessive.
- Move to Lost Highway when you are ready for the journey’s logic itself to become unreliable.
- Use the Road Trilogy as a tonal reset when you want travel, landscape and self-discovery without a nightmare framework.
- Finish with Mulholland Dr. if you want to follow Lynch away from road-movie structure and deeper into dream logic.
Content and commitment considerations
Time commitment
The director’s cut of Until the End of the World is the outlier. Criterion Channel lists 287 minutes, while the Wim Wenders Stiftung uses the phrase 4 1/2 hours. Confirm the specific edition before scheduling it. The cited pages do not provide runtimes for the other recommendations, so no equivalent runtime comparison is stated here.
Violence and disturbing material
Wild at Heart is explicitly associated by Criterion with violence, danger, desire and depravity. Lost Highway is built around dread, noir menace and destabilizing images. The Wenders trilogy is the gentlest choice in this group, while Until the End of the World is expansive and emotionally demanding rather than primarily a shock film.

For Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr., resist the urge to treat every image as a clue that must decode into a single factual timeline. Track recurring emotions, relationships and visual patterns instead. For Until the End of the World, do the opposite at first: follow the route and the technology, then notice how dreams alter what the characters think a journey is for.
Bottom line
Until the End of the World is the best overall bridge between road movie and dream cinema because the journey is genuinely global and the dream element is part of the plot’s technology. Wild at Heart is the most direct lovers-on-the-run alternative, Lost Highway the most disorienting highway experience, and Wenders’s Road Trilogy the grounded poetic option. Add Mulholland Dr. when you want more dream logic than road-movie structure.
