OBS Studio is the best free starting point for most people streaming from Windows 10. It is free and open source, supports Windows 10, and offers detailed scene and audio controls. XSplit Broadcaster is worth considering if its workflow suits you or you need its paid multi-platform output. Streamlabs Desktop is a candidate if you specifically want its documented Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting feature and meet its requirements. None is a universal winner: your PC, streaming destination, and production needs matter.
Which streaming software should you choose?

These distinctions are based on official product documentation, not hands-on comparative testing. The reviewed sources do not establish which app runs fastest, is easiest to learn, or performs best on a given PC.
OBS Studio: the free default to evaluate first
OBS is a strong choice if you want control over how a stream looks and sounds without paying for the software. Its scenes can combine sources such as a webcam and capture card. You can use custom transitions, apply audio filters to individual sources, arrange a production in Studio Mode, and extend the app with plugins or scripts. See the OBS Studio product page.
Check your Windows 10 PC before streaming
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as system requirements. OBS also cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully. The CPU load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Review the OBS system requirements, then use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and test the resulting settings on your actual PC and upload connection.

When a capture card is relevant
A capture card is optional. It may be needed when your setup has an external video source, such as a console or separate camera, that must feed into the streaming computer. OBS supports capture cards as a possible scene source, but the documentation cited here does not establish compatibility for a particular card, camera, or console. Check the device maker’s compatibility information before buying or building around one.
XSplit Broadcaster: consider it for its workflow or paid output
XSplit Broadcaster is Windows streaming and recording software with custom RTMP output. Its recording features include multiple audio tracks, which can be useful if you want separate tracks for editing. The product page says simultaneous broadcasting to multiple platforms requires a Premium License; the plan comparison lists multi-service broadcasting among paid features.

The free plan is listed at $0 and supports up to 720p without a watermark. If that limit works for your stream, it is an option to try; if you need higher output or paid features, confirm the current terms on the XSplit plan comparison. Streamlabs Desktop: a Twitch-specific feature to check
Streamlabs documents Enhanced Broadcasting, which lets Streamlabs Desktop send multiple video qualities directly to Twitch. Its support article, dated August 30, 2025, lists Windows 10 or 11 and specified software, GPU, driver, display, and sustained upstream bandwidth requirements. The documented feature is currently limited to Twitch and is not compatible with multistreaming or dual output. This is evidence about that feature, not a complete statement of Streamlabs Desktop’s general Windows 10 compatibility or every capability it offers.
Choose based on your stream and your PC
- Choose OBS first if you want a free tool with flexible scene and audio controls and are willing to configure and test it.
- Consider XSplit if its production workflow suits you, you need custom RTMP output or multiple recording audio tracks, or you want to evaluate its paid multi-platform broadcasting.
- Consider Streamlabs for Enhanced Broadcasting if Twitch is your destination, you want multiple video qualities, and your system satisfies the feature-specific requirements.
- Keep the setup simple if all you need is a basic scene, microphone, and webcam. Extra production controls are useful only if your workflow needs them.
- Test before going live. The right settings depend on your encoder, resolution, frame rate, scenes, and available upload bandwidth. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard if using OBS, then verify the result with a test stream.
