It combines scenes and sources with configurable recording formats, save locations, and audio tracks. Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative when selective recording or multitrack audio is central to your editing workflow. For straightforward gameplay capture and instant replay, consider NVIDIA App or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition if your system supports them.
These recommendations are based on documented features, not comparative performance tests. The right choice depends on whether you need a complete production setup or just gameplay capture, and on what your computer can record reliably.
How to choose local recording software
Local recording saves a video file on your computer while you stream—or instead of streaming. Before choosing an app, decide what the recording needs to contain and how you plan to edit it.
- Production controls: If you need scenes, sources, overlays, and a broadcast workflow, look for a studio-style app. If you only need gameplay footage or short highlights, a GPU capture tool may be simpler.
- Editing flexibility: If you want to adjust your voice and game or desktop audio separately, check for multitrack recording and configure it before you start.
- Reliability and storage: Choose a safe save location, a suitable recording format, and a drive with enough free space. High-quality or long recordings can use substantial storage.
- Hardware and workload: Encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and the GPU in use all affect recording performance. A program opening successfully does not guarantee that it can record your preferred settings smoothly.
Best local recording software for live streamers
1. OBS Studio — best general-purpose starting point
OBS Studio is the strongest fit here for streamers who want a configurable production setup and local recording in one application. Its official guide covers recording while broadcasting as well as recording offline, with controls for the recording path, format, quality, and—under Advanced output—audio tracks. The OBS Project describes OBS as free and open source in its official repository.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS recommends MKV when an ungraceful shutdown is a concern because it helps avoid losing the entire recording. If your editor or upload workflow needs MP4, OBS has built-in remuxing to convert the file. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide for recording settings and remuxing details.
OBS is not a guarantee of smooth capture at every setting. The OBS system requirements guidance cautions that requirements depend on the encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Use its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then make a short test recording with the scenes and sources you expect to use.

2. Streamlabs Desktop — best fit for selective capture and multitrack workflows
Streamlabs Desktop is a credible alternative if you want a guided desktop workflow and recording controls packaged with your streaming setup. Its getting-started guide documents a recording-only choice and importing OBS settings.
Streamlabs documents multitrack recording, which can keep microphone and desktop audio separate for editing, and selective recording, which lets you choose what appears in the recorded video. These features may suit a workflow where the live broadcast and edited version should not contain exactly the same elements. See its multitrack recording guide and recording functionality overview. The documented feature differences do not establish that Streamlabs is faster or more reliable than OBS across computers.

3. NVIDIA App — for supported NVIDIA gameplay capture
If you mainly want gameplay footage or highlights and have compatible NVIDIA hardware, NVIDIA App offers Record and Instant Replay through its overlay. NVIDIA’s 2024 feature overview describes controls for microphone capture, sound sources, separate microphone audio, quality, and save location.
This is a more capture-focused route than a full scene-based production workflow. The cited overview is from 2024; check current app behavior and hardware support for your particular system before relying on a specific control.

4. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition — for supported AMD gameplay capture and replay
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition includes local recording, desktop and game capture settings, microphone and camera selection, and Instant Replay. AMD says Instant Replay can capture the previous 20 minutes, with available options varying by system configuration. Its recording settings guide was last updated November 11, 2024; its illustrated steps use Adrenalin 23.9.1 and an RX 7900 XTX, so menus and controls may differ on other configurations. AMD also advises keeping ample free space because gameplay recordings can be very large.

1. Choose the format and save location
In OBS, set the recording path and format in the output settings. MKV is the safer choice if you are concerned that an application or system interruption could prevent a clean file close. Remux to MP4 afterward if your editing or publishing workflow requires it. Confirm that the target drive has room before a long session.

2. Configure separate audio before recording
If you will need to adjust microphone and game or desktop audio independently, enable and assign the required audio tracks before recording. OBS supports track selection through Advanced output, and Streamlabs documents a multitrack workflow. Twitch also provides a local recording guide covering track separation. Check a short test file in your editor to confirm that the tracks are actually separated and audible as intended.
3. Check which GPU runs the software
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, verify that OBS is assigned appropriately. OBS warns that running OBS on the integrated GPU while a game uses the discrete GPU can interfere with Game Capture or performance. Follow the OBS GPU Selection Guide for the relevant setup.
4. Test representative settings and scenes
There is no universally correct resolution, frame rate, or encoder setting established for every machine. Use the settings you intend to use for the actual broadcast, including your normal scenes and capture sources, and record a short sample. Watch for dropped frames, stutter, missing sources, unsynchronized audio, and unexpected file size before committing to a long session.
Common recording problems and fixes
- The recording is missing or damaged after a crash: Use MKV in OBS for greater resilience to an ungraceful stop, then remux to MP4 if needed.
- The video stutters or the game slows down: Reduce the workload by adjusting resolution, FPS, encoder, or scene complexity, and test again. Compatible hardware alone does not ensure performance at every setting.
- Game Capture fails or performance suffers on a laptop: Check whether OBS and the game are using mismatched integrated and discrete GPUs; consult the OBS GPU guide.
- Voice and game audio cannot be edited separately: Enable and assign multitrack recording before the session. Existing mixed audio generally cannot be separated into clean original sources after recording.
- The drive fills during a session: Check the recording folder and available space in advance. Move the save path to a drive with sufficient capacity if necessary; an external SSD is an optional storage convenience, not a requirement.
- A capture or replay setting is missing: Hardware support and software versions affect available controls. Verify the current documentation and settings for your GPU and app rather than assuming every guide menu applies to every system.
Or let it run in the cloud
Local recording software saves footage on your computer; it does not keep a YouTube channel live after that computer stops running. If you want uploaded videos to loop as a 24/7 YouTube stream instead, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account).
The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-broadcasting tool. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
