For an interactive online class, start with the meeting or classroom service your school already supports. Use OBS Studio when you need to compose multiple video and audio sources into a more controlled production; it creates the outgoing program but does not provide the student interaction layer. Zoom offers separate options for streaming out to a custom destination or bringing an encoder feed into certain webinar products. Microsoft Teams live events retired on June 30, 2026, so new plans should use current Teams town hall information instead.
Choose software by the job your class needs done
“Streaming software” can mean the tool that brings students together, the tool that produces a polished video feed, or the service that delivers a one-way broadcast. Those are different jobs, and a class may use more than one tool.
| Class need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Students need to speak, ask questions, or collaborate | Your school’s supported meeting or classroom service | It provides the interaction layer. Check attendee access, capacity, authentication, and available participation features for your specific plan. |
| Teacher needs scenes, titles, multiple sources, or transitions | OBS Studio paired with a student-facing destination | OBS mixes and switches production sources; it is not itself a classroom or meeting service. |
| A Zoom class needs a custom destination or an encoder-produced webinar feed | Zoom’s relevant custom-streaming or incoming RTMP workflow | These are distinct workflows with separate account and product requirements; verify eligibility before building the class around one. |
| A Teams event was planned using the retired live-events product | Current Teams town hall documentation and licensing | The live-events experience retired June 30, 2026; do not schedule a new event in that retired product. |
Before choosing, decide whether the lesson is interactive or mainly one-way, how much production control you need, what the school already licenses, and whether the teacher’s computer and network can handle the planned setup. Accessibility, captions, recording, playback, and privacy controls should also be checked against the chosen service and institutional policy; the sources cited here do not establish a complete side-by-side comparison of those features.
OBS Studio: production control, not a classroom by itself
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as free, open-source software for video recording and live streaming, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It can combine sources such as a webcam, screen or window capture, images, text, browser windows, and capture cards into scenes, then switch between scenes with transitions. Its audio mixer supports per-source filters including noise suppression and gain.

When OBS is useful for teaching
- Build a lecture layout that shows a screen alongside the teacher’s camera.
- Switch between slides, a demonstration window, title cards, and prerecorded segments.
- Mix and adjust different audio sources rather than relying on a single unmodified input.
Students still need a destination or class platform if they are expected to talk, submit questions, or collaborate. OBS also adds setup and computer load. OBS’s system requirements guidance warns that a compatible system is not guaranteed to be capable of streaming or recording; CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
Set up and test the production
- Install OBS from the official OBS site on a supported Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. Review the current system requirements for the operating system and graphics setup.
- Open OBS and use the Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish a starting configuration for the computer and intended use. Treat it as a starting point, not proof that the full class setup will work.
- Create a scene for the main lesson. Add only the sources needed, such as display or window capture, camera, slides, and text. Make a separate scene for a break or Q&A only if it will help students follow the class.
- Check the audio mixer while speaking at normal teaching volume. Adjust source levels and use filters such as noise suppression or gain only where they improve the actual sound; listen to a test recording or private rehearsal.
- Connect OBS to the class platform or streaming destination using that service’s current connection instructions and credentials. Do not assume that a Zoom custom-streaming key and Zoom incoming RTMP setup are interchangeable.
- Rehearse the complete route on the actual computer and network, including screen changes, audio, student access, and any recording or caption workflow. Keep an alternate way to communicate or deliver the lesson if the stream fails.
Zoom: distinguish streaming out from bringing OBS in
Zoom documents two different use cases. Custom livestreaming sends a Zoom meeting or webinar outward to a custom destination. Incoming RTMP brings an encoder feed such as OBS into a supported Zoom webinar product. The account and product conditions differ, so identify which direction the video needs to travel before configuring anything.

Stream a Zoom meeting or webinar to a custom site
According to Zoom’s custom livestreaming instructions, eligible Pro, Business, Education, or Enterprise accounts can use this option when an account administrator has enabled the feature and the host has the relevant Meetings or Webinars license. Higher video quality also depends on the relevant HD video setting. Confirm the account’s eligibility and administrator settings before class day; having a Zoom meeting link alone does not establish that custom streaming is available.
Send an OBS feed into a Zoom webinar with RTMP
Zoom’s incoming RTMP guidance currently limits this workflow to Zoom Events and Zoom Webinars Plus. Zoom documents a maximum of 1920×1080 at 30 fps for this path, with recommended minimum upload rates of 4 Mbps for 720p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p30. These are Zoom’s product-specific recommendations, not universal guarantees of adequate bandwidth.

Microsoft Teams: use the current event path
Microsoft’s Teams live-events help page states that the live event experience retired on June 30, 2026, and points users toward Teams town halls for the newer event experience. The old page describes the retired product; it is not a current recommendation for scheduling a class. For a Teams-based class or broadcast, check the current town hall documentation, licensing, audience access, and production roles before relying on a particular setup.
Check school licensing, equipment, and fallback plans
Start with institutional access and cost
Ask the school’s IT or learning-technology team which meeting, webinar, or classroom services are already licensed and permitted. Zoom’s education pricing FAQ says eligible accredited K–12 and post-secondary institutions can purchase Zoom One for Education bundles. It lists a minimum order of 20 for School and Campus plans, while Enterprise plans use higher minimums and a site-wide coverage model. The FAQ describes a student option for higher-education institutions buying an Enterprise bundle, subject to terms. These institutional arrangements are not a default offer for an individual instructor; eligibility, included services, minimums, and pricing should be confirmed with the institution or vendor.

Match the production to the computer and connection
- For OBS, test the actual scenes, encoder, resolution, and frame rate on the machine that will teach. A computer that opens OBS may still struggle with the intended workload.
- For Zoom incoming RTMP, use Zoom’s stated upload recommendations for the target mode and test under realistic network conditions.
- Keep the production simple unless the teaching goal requires extra scenes or sources. More sources and effects can add setup complexity and computer demand.
- Have a fallback such as a meeting link, class message channel, or alternate way to share lesson materials, consistent with school policy.
Make audio intelligible before buying more gear
Clear speech matters more than adding production equipment by default. First test the microphone already available in the room and the software’s audio levels. A USB microphone, webcam, or capture card may help a particular setup, but no specific model has been evaluated here; choose equipment only after identifying the actual audio or video limitation.

- Ask whether students need to participate live. If yes, begin with the school-supported interactive service.
- Decide whether a basic camera and screen share are enough. If so, avoid adding a production layer without a teaching reason.
- If you need composed scenes or multiple sources, add OBS and connect it to a destination that supports the intended class workflow.
- If using Zoom, establish whether you are streaming out from Zoom or bringing an encoder into a Zoom webinar, then verify that exact account and product eligibility.
- If using Teams for an event-style broadcast, plan around town halls rather than the retired live-events experience.
- Rehearse with the same computer, microphone, network, platform, and student access settings planned for class; keep a fallback route.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is not an interactive class but a continuous YouTube channel playing uploaded lessons or other prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube only, not a live camera feed.
