Streaming software does not unlock YouTube monetization. YouTube controls eligibility and revenue features; software helps you encode and produce the broadcast, with tools such as scenes, overlays, and alerts. For a documentary-style live show that needs integrated YouTube event widgets, Streamlabs documents those features. OBS Studio is another encoder option, but the available official information does not establish a feature-by-feature winner. If your format is prerecorded video played continuously rather than a live production, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it keeps a YouTube channel running 24/7, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
What streaming software can—and cannot—do for monetization
YouTube lists live ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as ways eligible creators can earn from live streams. Availability depends on YouTube’s eligibility rules and the creator’s settings. Streaming software can help operate the broadcast, but choosing a particular app does not make an ineligible channel eligible or guarantee revenue. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the platform-side features and conditions.
Think of software as the production layer: it may encode the stream, switch scenes, show overlays, and surface chat events such as Supers or memberships. YouTube remains the platform that enables monetization and serves any ads. Ad delivery is not guaranteed on every available slot.
Which software fits your live-show workflow?
| Option | Best fit | What the available official information establishes | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streamlabs | Creators who want integrated alerts, widgets, and overlays around YouTube events | Streamlabs documents YouTube widgets and alerts for events including subscriptions, memberships, gifted memberships, Super Chats, and Super Stickers. It offers Desktop, a Plugin for OBS, mobile, Console, and Talk Studio routes for YouTube streaming. Streamlabs’ YouTube streaming page describes its YouTube tools. | Streamlabs’ feature descriptions are vendor claims, not evidence that the software increases earnings. Multistreaming terms depend on the tool and route: some multiple-destination options require Ultra, while Streamlabs describes a free Dual Output route with one destination per layout. Check current plan terms before relying on a particular workflow. Streamlabs’ overview distinguishes these options. |
| OBS Studio | Creators who want an encoder-oriented production workflow | The OBS Project provides an official site and quick-start guidance for setting up a stream. OBS’ Quick Start Guide is the relevant starting point. | The official information reviewed here does not establish detailed current costs, system requirements, or specific integrations for YouTube monetization events, so it is not enough to declare OBS or Streamlabs the overall winner. |
| YouTube Live Control Room and first-party workflows | Straightforward broadcasts that do not need a separate, elaborate production setup | YouTube supports first-party live workflows as well as encoder-based streaming. Its guide outlines the available methods. YouTube’s live-streaming guide explains them. | For a more produced show, gaming stream, or event, an encoder workflow may be useful for scenes, overlays, and external production hardware. |
| StreamNeo | Prerecorded video that should run continuously on a YouTube channel | StreamNeo is #1 for the continuous prerecorded-video use case: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free. | It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live-production tool. |
Streamlabs lists Desktop as free to download and, at the time described on its page, supported Windows 10+ and macOS 12+. Software requirements and plan terms can change; check the vendor’s current information for your device and intended features.

Set up monetization in YouTube, then connect your production workflow
- Check channel eligibility and feature access. Review YouTube’s current monetization guidance in YouTube Studio. Do not assume that an encoder or an alert widget grants access to ads, Supers, or memberships.
- Choose the broadcast method. Use YouTube’s first-party workflow for a straightforward stream, or configure an encoder such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs if you need external production controls. YouTube’s production guidance places encoder setup before configuring the stream in Live Control Room; current Studio labels may differ from older production documents.
- Configure the live event in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, create or select the stream and enable monetization if the channel and event are eligible. Use the stream key YouTube provides to connect the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in a scene, screenshot, or public post.
- Test the complete path before going live. Confirm that the encoder connects to the intended event and that scenes, audio, overlays, and any YouTube event alerts appear as expected. If using widgets, verify the specific events and destinations supported by the selected Streamlabs tool.
Choose a format with discovery and ad trade-offs in mind
YouTube documents both horizontal and vertical live streams, including simultaneous use of the two formats, but their capabilities are not identical. The formats can share chat, while discovery and monetization behavior differ. YouTube’s current format guidance describes vertical discovery through the Shorts feed and lists live ad pre-rolls and mid-rolls for horizontal streams; check the live workflow and format support in your chosen software before building a show around a specific feature. YouTube’s live-format comparison covers the distinctions.
Manage live ads without treating them as guaranteed income
When monetization is enabled, YouTube says a live stream can have pre-roll and display ads. Mid-rolls can be automatic, scheduled, or manual. Scheduled mid-roll gaps can be set to 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls; that mode can limit disruption for members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts or Supers, and snooze ads for everyone during high-engagement moments. These controls shape ad opportunities, not guaranteed earnings.

YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour among creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads, compared with channels that had not turned them on. The comparison covered 207 countries and was published by YouTube in January 2024. It is YouTube’s reported comparison, not a promise of a causal or repeatable result for any individual channel. YouTube’s mid-roll guidance includes the statistic and its context.
Documentary programming: rights and viewer experience matter
A documentary stream may include licensed footage, music, archival material, narration, or third-party clips. Before broadcasting, confirm that your rights cover the material’s use in a YouTube live stream and any monetized use; having access to a recording does not itself establish those rights. YouTube’s eligibility and monetization policies apply independently of the software you select. Keep the production focused on a coherent viewing experience: ad controls, alerts, and overlays are operational choices, not substitutes for a rights-cleared program.

Production equipment is optional for monetization. YouTube identifies microphones, cameras, and preamps as hardware usable with encoders; a microphone can improve intelligibility, but it does not unlock revenue features. YouTube’s streaming-methods guide describes encoder hardware and workflow options.

Quick selection checklist
- Choose YouTube’s first-party workflow if a simple broadcast is all you need.
- Consider Streamlabs if its documented widgets and alerts for YouTube events fit your show; verify the exact tool’s current destination and plan limits.
- Consider OBS Studio for an encoder-oriented workflow, while checking the official setup guidance and testing your own configuration rather than assuming feature parity with another app.
- Use a horizontal or vertical format based on the discovery and live-ad features you need, and confirm current support on both YouTube and the selected software.
- For continuous playback of uploaded videos rather than camera production, use a service built for cloud looping instead of leaving a home computer running.
