OBS Studio is a practical starting point for streaming 1440p or 4K to YouTube because it exposes the key output controls and documents both software and hardware encoding. It is not a universal winner: the right choice depends on your computer and encoder, the codec you send, and whether your upload connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended bitrate. Set the output deliberately, test a representative broadcast, and monitor stream health rather than assuming a higher resolution will work reliably.

What to choose for high-resolution YouTube streaming

For a creator who wants control over resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scenes, and encoder choice, OBS Studio is a sound first option. Its documentation covers the settings needed to configure a stream and recommends testing before going live. The available evidence does not establish a reliable overall ranking of OBS against Streamlabs Desktop, vMix, Wirecast, or other applications, so treat OBS as a well-documented option—not a proven winner on price, ease, performance, or stability.

High-resolution streaming is a joint decision across the streaming software, encoder, computer, and internet connection. The software must offer the desired output; the encoder must handle the codec and frame rate; the computer must sustain the workload; and the upload connection must carry the bitrate consistently. A capture card is only needed when your setup requires capturing an external camera, console, or other video source. It is not mandatory for every stream.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings to your target

YouTube’s live encoder guide, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends different bitrates according to resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are configuration recommendations from YouTube, not guarantees of picture quality or evidence that a particular connection can deliver them reliably. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guide for the current requirements.

Output AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube’s guide also lists minimum bitrates below its recommended values. A minimum should not be mistaken for a target that guarantees a clean stream. For example, the guide recommends 35 Mbps for 2160p60 with AV1 or H.265 and 50 Mbps with H.264; those recommendations are not proof that your line can sustain either rate without interruption.

Protocol, codec, and stream format

  • YouTube’s current ingest guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission.
  • Supported video codecs include H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. The guide allows up to 60 fps.
  • Use a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
  • For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
  • YouTube says its low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; 4K streams use normal latency.

Configure OBS for 1440p or 4K

OBS separates the canvas where you arrange sources from the scaled output sent to YouTube. Its official overview guide documents the stream service and key, bitrate controls, canvas and output resolutions, frame rate, scenes, and preflight testing. Exact menu labels may vary by OBS release, but the essential settings are in Settings.

  1. Connect YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and configure the server and stream key as appropriate for your YouTube workflow. Treat the stream key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not share it publicly.
  2. Choose the canvas. Open Settings > Video and set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the working size for your scene composition. This is the space in which sources are arranged; it does not by itself determine the stream’s emitted resolution.
  3. Choose output size and frame rate. In the same Video settings, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 2560×1440 for 1440p or 3840×2160 for 4K, and select the intended frame rate, such as 30 or 60 fps. Ensure the source footage and hardware can support the target. OBS cautions: “60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps.”
  4. Set the encoder and bitrate. In Settings > Output, select an encoder available on your system, then set rate control to CBR and enter the bitrate appropriate to your codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s guide. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. If the encoder exposes additional quality or preset controls, consult its documentation and test on the target machine; there is no single quality preset established here for every GPU and workload.
  5. Set audio. Choose an audio encoder accepted by YouTube, such as AAC or MP3, and ensure the correct microphone or program audio is routed into OBS. Check that the audio is present and synchronized in a test broadcast.
  6. Compose and inspect the scene. Add only the sources your stream needs—such as a display, media source, camera, or capture card—and check framing, scaling, overlays, and audio. A capture card is an input option for external video, not a general requirement.
  7. Run a representative preflight. Before an important event, test at the intended resolution and frame rate with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast. Check OBS performance and YouTube’s stream health. If either shows instability, reduce the output demand or resolve the bottleneck before the event.

Choose software or hardware encoding carefully

OBS supports x264 software encoding as well as hardware encoding where compatible hardware is available. Software encoding uses the CPU; hardware encoding can move much of the work to a dedicated GPU or platform encoder. OBS’s hardware encoding guide notes that modern hardware encoders can provide good quality with minimal performance impact, but earlier generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding at the default veryfast preset.

  • Consider hardware encoding when the system has a suitable, supported encoder and CPU load is a constraint. Confirm the codec and output combination is available on your particular hardware and operating system.
  • Consider software encoding when the CPU can sustain the chosen settings and its quality/performance trade-off suits your workflow.
  • Do not choose by label alone. “Hardware” is not automatically better, and a higher nominal output resolution does not show that the machine can encode it smoothly. Compare encoder generation, supported codec, target frame rate, and observed system performance during a representative test.

Check the connection and monitor the broadcast

YouTube advises choosing stream quality based on the available connection, running an upload speed test, and testing with audio and motion similar to the actual event. Upload capacity must be sufficient for the selected stream bitrate with headroom for normal variation; a speed-test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee of sustained performance. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while broadcasting, rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents accepted inbound resolutions and stream-health fields: LiveStreams API reference.

Troubleshoot common high-resolution problems

  • YouTube reports poor stream health or buffering: the upload may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the connection may fluctuate. Run an upload speed test, check the live health messages, and test at a lower bitrate or output target before the next broadcast.
  • OBS reports rendering or encoding strain: the chosen output, frame rate, or encoder may exceed what the system can sustain. Test at 30 fps instead of 60, reduce output resolution, or try a compatible hardware encoder; validate the result rather than assuming a change fixed it.
  • The stream is not the expected resolution: check both Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution in OBS, and verify that the selected output is accepted by YouTube. The canvas and emitted stream size are separate settings.
  • The stream key or connection fails: confirm the selected YouTube service/server and key in OBS. If you suspect the key has been exposed or is no longer valid, manage or replace it in YouTube Studio, then update OBS. Keep the replacement private.
  • Audio is missing or wrong: inspect OBS audio sources and meters, confirm the selected audio encoder is AAC or MP3, and check the test broadcast for synchronization.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Technical ingest settings do not grant rights to the video, music, footage, or other material in a stream. Before broadcasting, confirm you have the necessary rights and permissions for every included work and follow YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies. A successful encoder test cannot establish that content is authorized or that a channel complies with YouTube policy.
