The right choice depends on whether you want a deep general-interest catalog, prestige nonfiction, family-friendly factual programming, sports documentaries, or the lowest monthly bill.
This comparison covers U.S. on-demand services only. It does not include live-TV replacements such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, or Sling. Prices are labeled by date because several services changed their rates during 2025.
Quick verdict
| Rank | Service | Best for | 2025 editorial verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | HBO Max | Prestige programming and a broad premium catalog | Best overall balance of quality and depth |
| 2 | Netflix | Variety, frequent releases, and international programming | Best all-purpose catalog |
| 3 | Apple TV+ | High-production-value originals and ad-free viewing | Best focused service |
| 4 | Hulu | Current television and bundle value | Best companion service for a mixed household |
| 5 | Prime Video | Existing Amazon Prime members | Useful value, but an uneven interface |
| 6 | Disney+ | Families, franchises, and National Geographic | Best for family-oriented factual viewing |
| 7 | Paramount+ | CBS, sports, franchises, and Showtime | Worth considering for specific interests |
| 8 | Peacock | NBC programming, sports, and lower-cost access | Good niche value despite its 2025 increase |
The ranking follows the broad editorial assessment from Tom’s Guide’s 2025 service review, which graded HBO Max first, followed by Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, and Prime Video. For documentary viewers, the ranking should be adjusted according to subject matter: Disney+ becomes more attractive for National Geographic and family viewing, while Paramount+ and Peacock make more sense when sports or network programming is part of the subscription.
1. HBO Max: best overall for serious viewing
HBO Max was the strongest general recommendation in 2025 because it combined a premium reputation with a comparatively broad catalog. Tom’s Guide awarded it an A+ and highlighted The Pitt, The White Lotus, Hacks, House of the Dragon, and The Last of Us.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
That matters to documentary viewers because the service is not dependent on one narrow genre. It works as a household subscription: one person can watch prestige series, another can look for nonfiction, and the catalog still offers major scripted releases. Its main disadvantage is price. The cheapest tier is not the cheapest entry point in this group, and the premium tier is expensive if you only watch occasionally.
2025 U.S. prices
- Basic with Ads: $9.99 per month for much of 2025.
- Standard: $16.99 per month for much of 2025.
- Premium: $20.99 per month for much of 2025, including 4K video and higher download limits.
Later in 2025, the listed prices became $10.99 with ads, $18.49 for Standard, and $22.99 for Premium. The service also changed its name from Max back to HBO Max during summer 2025; the company said the programming, plans, pricing, and app experience were unchanged at the time.
2. Netflix: best for variety and regular discoveries
Netflix remains the safest choice when you do not know exactly what you want to watch. Its advantages are catalog size, frequent additions, international programming, and a steady flow of major releases. Tom’s Guide rated it A and pointed to releases such as Stranger Things 5, Squid Game, Wednesday, Adolescence, and KPop Demon Hunters.
For documentary fans, that breadth is more useful than a tightly curated catalog if your interests change from history to crime, science, music, politics, or popular culture. The tradeoff is that individual titles can disappear when licensing agreements expire. Netflix is also increasingly strict about household sharing, so an account used by people outside the household may require extra-member slots.

- Standard: $17.99 per month, with two simultaneous screens.
- Premium: $24.99 per month, with four simultaneous screens and 4K/HDR.
Netflix’s old Basic plan was already discontinued and should not be presented as a current 2025 option. Its current help page lists different prices—$8.99, $19.99, and $26.99—so those figures should not be backdated into a 2025 comparison.
The ad-supported plan also has restrictions. Some titles are unavailable because of licensing arrangements and display a lock icon. “With ads” is therefore not simply the same catalog with commercial breaks added.
3. Apple TV+: best for a smaller, ad-free catalog
Apple TV+ takes the opposite approach from Netflix. Its catalog is smaller and largely built around original programming, but the service has developed a strong reputation for polished productions. Severance, Slow Horses, and Silo were among the major reasons Tom’s Guide gave it a B+.

- Ask to control your TV with your voice, and quickly cast your photos, videos, music and more from your phone, tablet, or PC to your TV with Chromecast built in
- Built-in Virtual Assistant – just press the mic button on the remote to get what you want
- Built-in content and entertainment including YouTube, Play Movies & TV, and more
- Support for thousands of Apps on the Play Store
- 2K resolution TV streaming
This is a good choice for viewers who would rather watch a limited number of carefully produced programs than browse an enormous catalog. It is also the simplest service in this comparison for people who want an ad-free experience: there was one main plan and no lower ad-supported tier in the 2025 snapshot.

2025 U.S. price
Apple TV+ cost $9.99 per month earlier in 2025. Apple later raised the price to $12.99 per month. Apple’s current subscription page lists the $12.99 price and a seven-day trial, so the date matters when comparing it with the earlier 2025 figure.
4. Hulu: best for current television and bundle value
Hulu is less compelling as a pure originals service than HBO Max, Netflix, or Apple TV+, but it remains useful for viewers who want current-season television, licensed programming, Hulu Originals, and a large mixed catalog. Its strongest value often comes from combining it with Disney+.
2025 U.S. prices
- With Ads: $9.99 per month.
- No Ads: $18.99 per month.
- Annual With Ads: $119.99 per year.
The Disney+ and Hulu bundles were particularly competitive:
- Bundle Basic: $10.99 per month, with ads on both services.
- Bundle Premium: $19.99 per month, with both services ad-free in the 2025 pricing snapshot.
Disney+ and Hulu remained separate apps, although Disney had begun integrating Hulu content and navigation for eligible subscribers. A Disney+ subscription does not automatically expose every Hulu title inside the Disney+ app; some content remains available only through Hulu, and device and feature restrictions can differ.
Hulu’s “No Ads” label also has exceptions. Certain live, restricted, or specially licensed programs can still include advertising or interruptions.
5. Prime Video: best if you already pay for Amazon Prime
Prime Video makes the most financial sense for existing Prime members because the video service is included with the broader membership. Tom’s Guide gave it a B-, citing programs such as The Boys, Gen V, Reacher, and Fallout, while criticizing inconsistent releases, a cluttered interface, and occasional glitches.

The interface is an important consideration for documentary viewers. Prime Video mixes included programs with rentals, purchases, and channel add-ons, so a title appearing in a search does not necessarily mean it is included in the subscription. Check the “Included with Prime” designation before assuming you can watch it without an extra charge.
2025 U.S. prices
- Prime membership: $14.99 per month or $139 per year, with Prime Video included.
- Standalone Prime Video: $8.99 per month with ads.
- Ad-free upgrade: an additional $3 per month in the 2025 snapshot.
The ad-free upgrade primarily removes standard commercial interruptions; it does not create a separate catalog, and live programming and other exceptions may still contain interruptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Disney+: best for families and National Geographic programming
Disney+ is easiest to evaluate by its subject strengths rather than by catalog size. Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic remain its main differentiators. That makes it a particularly practical service for families and for viewers who want factual programming alongside major franchise releases.
2025 U.S. prices
- With Ads: $9.99 per month.
- Ad-free: $15.99 per month.
- Disney+ and Hulu Bundle Basic: $10.99 per month, both with ads.
- Disney+ and Hulu Bundle Premium: $19.99 per month, both ad-free.
The $10.99 bundle was one of the clearest bargains in the 2025 market: it cost only slightly more than Disney+ alone while adding Hulu. It is less attractive if your interests rarely overlap with Disney’s franchises, family programming, or National Geographic.
7. Paramount+: best for CBS, sports, franchises, and Showtime
Paramount+ is a targeted subscription rather than the strongest all-purpose choice. It is most useful when CBS programming, sports, Paramount franchises, or Showtime content is central to your viewing.
2025 U.S. prices
- Essential: $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year.
- Paramount+ with Showtime: $12.99 per month or $119.99 per year.
The Showtime plan included Showtime content, downloads, and a local live CBS feed. It was ad-free apart from live television and limited exceptions. Essential included limited commercials and excluded those premium features.

8. Peacock: best for NBC, sports, and inexpensive access
Peacock remained a useful lower-cost option for NBC programming, sports, next-day television, and selected original content. Its main problem in 2025 was a substantial price increase, which weakened its previous advantage over larger services.
2025 U.S. prices
Before July 23, 2025:
- Premium: $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year.
- Premium Plus: $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year.
From July 23, 2025:
- Premium: $10.99 per month or $109.99 per year.
- Premium Plus: $16.99 per month or $169.99 per year.
Existing subscribers generally moved to the new price on the next billing date on or after August 22, 2025. Promotional pricing continued until the relevant promotion ended. Anyone comparing a Peacock subscription should therefore record both the signup date and the billing date.
How much did streaming cost in 2025?
In a September 2025 comparison, the cheapest entry tiers ranged from roughly $7.99 to $13 per month, while the most expensive premium plans reached approximately $25 per month. Buying the cheapest tier from all the major services would total about $67 per month; choosing their premium tiers would cost roughly $108 per month, before taxes and add-ons.

That calculation is a warning against keeping every service permanently. A better strategy for documentary viewers is to rotate subscriptions:
- Identify the documentary, filmmaker, subject, or series you want to watch.
- Search the service’s current catalog before subscribing; availability changes.
- Choose the cheapest tier that includes the title and the playback quality you need.
- Watch the relevant catalog during one billing period.
- Cancel before renewal if the service no longer has something specific to offer.
Annual plans can reduce the effective monthly price for services you will use consistently. They are a poor deal for a short-term viewing project if you are likely to cancel after one or two months.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “ad-free” really means
Ad-free plans are not identical across services. Live channels and sports commonly retain commercials. Some platforms show promotional material, and certain licensed programs have their own restrictions. Hulu explicitly warns that some live or otherwise restricted programming can contain ads even on its No Ads plan.
Netflix’s ad-supported plan has an additional limitation: some titles are unavailable because Netflix does not have the necessary advertising rights. Prime Video’s $3 upgrade removes ordinary commercial breaks but does not guarantee that every form of live or special-event interruption disappears.

Our methodology
The ranking weighs content quality, catalog depth, original programming, app experience, simultaneous streams, video quality, advertising, and price/value. It is an editorial comparison, not a measurement of the number of documentaries in each catalog. Documentary availability changes too frequently, and services do not present their catalogs in a consistent way, for a raw title count to be a reliable measure.
For this audience, the practical question is more specific: does the service offer enough high-quality nonfiction or adjacent programming to justify another monthly bill? HBO Max and Netflix are the strongest general-purpose choices; Apple TV+ is the cleanest ad-free option; Disney+ is especially relevant for National Geographic and family viewing; and the remaining services are best selected for particular networks, sports, franchises, or bundles.
FAQ
What is the best streaming service of 2025 overall?
HBO Max was the strongest overall choice in the cited 2025 editorial ranking, receiving an A+ for its premium catalog, original programming, and broad appeal. Netflix was the better choice for maximum variety and frequent new releases.
Which streaming service is cheapest in the 2025 comparison?
Netflix Standard with Ads cost $7.99 per month in the 2025 snapshot, while Paramount+ Essential and other entry plans occupied nearby price ranges. Peacock was $7.99 before July 23, 2025, then increased to $10.99 per month.
Is Disney+ or Hulu better for documentary viewers?
Disney+ is the more natural choice for National Geographic and family-oriented factual programming. Hulu is stronger for current television and mixed licensed content. The Disney+ and Hulu ad-supported bundle cost $10.99 per month in the 2025 snapshot.
Did streaming prices change during 2025?
Yes. Peacock increased its prices on July 23, 2025, Apple TV+ rose from $9.99 to $12.99 later in the year, and HBO Max’s year-end listed prices were higher than its earlier 2025 rates. Always attach a date to a quoted price.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose HBO Max for the strongest all-around premium service, Netflix for the deepest variety, Apple TV+ for a smaller ad-free catalog, and Disney+ for family and National Geographic viewing. Hulu is most valuable in the Disney bundle, while Prime Video, Paramount+, and Peacock make sense when their specific networks, sports, franchises, or existing memberships match your interests. Because prices and catalogs moved repeatedly in 2025, subscribe for a defined viewing project rather than assuming one service will remain the best forever.
