House of the Dragon Season 3 is no longer an upcoming release: HBO’s eight-episode season premiered on June 21, 2026, and is airing weekly on HBO and HBO Max. Its story moves the Targaryen civil war into a more openly destructive phase, with Rhaenyra’s campaign for King’s Landing, Aemond’s defence of the Green cause and the Battle of the Gullet at the centre of the season.

This guide covers the confirmed cast, release schedule, story setup, major new characters, trailers and what HBO has announced about the final season.

House of the Dragon Season 3 release date and schedule

Season 3 premiered in the United States on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. New episodes are released weekly on HBO and HBO Max.

Detail Confirmed information
Premiere date June 21, 2026
Number of episodes Eight
Release pattern One episode per week
Finale Scheduled for August 9, 2026
Showrunner Ryan Condal
Source material George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood

The season is set roughly 200 years before Game of Thrones, during the Targaryen civil war later known as the Dance of the Dragons. The conflict began with rival claims to the Iron Throne after the death of King Viserys I, dividing the dynasty into Rhaenyra’s Blacks and Aegon II’s Greens.

The principal returning cast includes:

  • Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen
  • Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen
  • Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower
  • Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II Targaryen
  • Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen

  • Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower
  • Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole
  • Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria

  • Phoebe Campbell as Rhaena Targaryen

HBO’s wider Season 3 cast announcement also lists James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, Abubakar Salim, Tom Cullen, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler, Joplin Sibtain and Barry Sloane.

New and increasingly important characters

Season 3 expands the war beyond the immediate royal family. Published cast listings identify several characters whose roles become important as the conflict spreads through Westeros:

Actor Character
James Norton Lord Ormund Hightower
Kieran Bew Hugh Hammer
Tom Bennett Ulf the White
Clinton Liberty Addam of Hull
Gayle Rankin Alys Rivers
Freddie Fox Gwayne Hightower
Tom Taylor Cregan Stark
Simon Russell Beale Simon Strong

Among the most significant developments is the growing role of new dragonriders recruited by Rhaenyra. Their arrival changes the military balance and gives the series more viewpoints outside the established Targaryen and Velaryon leadership.

What is Season 3 about?

Season 3 continues immediately within the consequences of the war between the Blacks and Greens. Rhaenyra is working to seize or regain King’s Landing, while the Green faction tries to preserve Aegon II’s claim after the king’s position has been badly weakened.

The official synopsis for the premiere places Rhaenyra in position to move against the capital. At the same time, the Triarchy sails to confront Corlys Velaryon in the Gullet, bringing the wider maritime struggle directly into the opening movement of the season.

The Battle of the Gullet

The Battle of the Gullet is the season’s central announced set piece. It is a major naval and dragon battle involving Corlys Velaryon, the Triarchy and forces connected to both Targaryen factions. HBO’s promotional material gives the battle a prominent place, signalling that the war will not be fought only in council chambers or around King’s Landing.

The Gullet also matters because it connects the royal succession crisis to the Velaryons’ naval power and to the trading and military forces operating across the narrow sea. Its placement at the opening of Season 3 corrects a common misunderstanding: it is not the Season 2 finale event.

Rhaenyra, Aegon and Aemond

Rhaenyra’s objective remains control of the Iron Throne, but achieving it requires more than defeating one rival claimant. She must hold together an increasingly complicated coalition of family members, Velaryon allies and newly recruited dragonriders.

Aegon’s position is reduced after he flees the capital, leaving Aemond to defend the throne and carry much of the Green military response. That shift changes the relationship between the brothers and places greater weight on Aemond’s decisions as the war escalates.

A wider civil war

The story also broadens through the Hightowers, Velaryons and the Triarchy, as well as characters such as Addam of Hull, Hugh Hammer, Ulf the White, Alys Rivers and Ormund Hightower. Their inclusion reflects the scale of the Dance: this is no longer only a dispute between two branches of one ruling family, but a conflict drawing in regional lords, seafarers, soldiers and dragonriders.

Season 3 trailers and promotional material

HBO Max released an official Season 3 teaser on February 19, 2026, followed by a full trailer before the June premiere. The promotional campaign has focused on four main elements:

  1. Rhaenyra’s attempt to take King’s Landing.
  2. The escalating war between the Blacks and Greens.
  3. The Battle of the Gullet and the Triarchy’s involvement.
  4. The appearance of new dragonriders and the expansion of the war beyond the central family.

Those trailers establish the scale and direction of the season without changing the basic premise inherited from Fire & Blood: the Targaryen dynasty is fighting itself, and its dragons make every political defeat potentially catastrophic.

Will there be a House of the Dragon Season 4?

Yes. HBO has renewed House of the Dragon for a fourth season. Ryan Condal has described the adaptation as a four-season story, so Season 4 is expected to conclude the series.

However, HBO has not announced an exact Season 4 premiere date or confirmed its final episode count. Claims that a specific release date has already been set should therefore be treated as unverified.
