First decide: on-demand or live television?
On-demand services
Netflix, ordinary Hulu and Prime Video let you choose a movie or episode from a library. They are priced like entertainment subscriptions and are judged by originals, current-season access, movie selection, downloads, picture quality and ease of discovery.

Live-TV replacements
YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV bundle scheduled broadcast and cable networks with cloud DVR. Their value depends on your local affiliates, sports rights, regional restrictions, number of viewers and add-ons. A live-TV plan is not directly comparable with an $8.99 on-demand tier.
Netflix: best default for on-demand viewing
Netflix is the strongest general recommendation for a household that wants original series, movies, international programming, documentaries, stand-up, reality and anime in a simple interface. Its catalog changes frequently, so availability should be checked when you subscribe.
Plans and limits
- Standard with ads: $8.99/month, 1080p, two supported devices and downloads on two supported devices. Some titles may be unavailable because of licensing.
- Standard: $19.99/month, 1080p, no ads, two simultaneous devices and one extra-member option at additional cost.
- Premium: $26.99/month, 4K/HDR, four simultaneous devices, downloads on six devices and spatial audio.
Premium picture and sound require compatible titles, devices, displays and internet service. Netflix plan specifications are listed at Netflix Help.
Who should choose Netflix?
Choose it as your anchor service if most viewing is scripted or unscripted on demand and you want one place to start. Skip it as your only service if you need local channels, live news or a particular sports league. Premium is the practical tier for a four-person household or a 4K television; the ad plan is the lowest-cost way to sample the service.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Hulu: best for current TV and bundle value
“Hulu” can mean a basic on-demand subscription, a Disney+/Hulu/ESPN-related bundle or Hulu + Live TV. Confirm the exact product before comparing prices.
On-demand Hulu
Hulu is compelling for current and recent television, network programming where available, FX-related programming and Hulu originals. Ad-supported and premium versions differ in commercials, downloads and sometimes availability. Its value rises if you also want Disney entertainment through a bundle.
Hulu + Live TV
The official Hulu page shows a $89.99/month plan with Hulu, Disney+ with ads, ESPN Select, 100+ live channels and unlimited DVR; a premium option is shown at $99.99/month. Channel lineups, local stations and included ESPN offerings vary, so verify your ZIP code and the exact bundle at checkout.
Hulu + Live TV suits households that want live television plus Hulu and Disney content. It is poor value for someone who only wants a few on-demand shows, and its live channels still contain normal broadcast commercials even when an on-demand library has a premium, reduced-ad option.
Rank #3
- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Prime Video: best for existing Amazon Prime members
Prime Video is included with Prime, so its effective price depends on whether you already value Prime shipping, music, Kindle and shopping benefits. The app combines included titles with rentals, purchases, third-party channels and premium subscriptions; a search result is not necessarily included at no extra charge.
Prime Video Ultra
Amazon’s current announcement describes Prime Video Ultra at $4.99/month above Prime. Ultra adds ad-free viewing for eligible Prime Video content, up to five concurrent streams, up to 100 downloads, 4K/UHD access and Dolby Vision. Amazon lists the ordinary Prime benefit with four concurrent streams and 50 downloads in its comparison. Title, device, provider and account limits apply, and live events or other specified content may still contain ads.
Who benefits most?
Prime Video is a strong ecosystem choice for an existing Prime member who wants occasional movies, Amazon MGM originals, older catalog depth, rentals and selected live events. It is less satisfying as a video-only subscription because the included-versus-paid labels require attention. Ultra makes sense when you already pay for Prime and specifically want eligible 4K and fewer ads.
YouTube TV: best cable replacement
YouTube TV is designed around live broadcast and cable networks, local affiliates, news, sports and a cloud DVR rather than a fixed on-demand movie catalog. The official plan advertises 100+ channels, unlimited DVR, six individual household accounts and three simultaneous streams.

4K Plus and offline viewing
The 4K Plus support page lists a $9.99/month price in the surfaced plan, while noting that prices can vary. It adds eligible 4K programs, unlimited simultaneous streams at home and offline viewing of eligible DVR recordings on mobile devices. It does not make the entire channel lineup 4K.
Sports, locals and restrictions
YouTube TV can be a better sports solution than an on-demand service, but “best for sports” depends on the sport, season and market. Check local affiliates, regional sports networks, league blackouts, the event’s channel and any required add-on. Sports Plus, which includes NFL RedZone among additional networks, is a separate paid option. Reliable broadband is required, and the subscription does not include internet service.
Catalogs by viewing need
- Originals and international programming: Netflix has the clearest single-service proposition.
- Current and recent television: Hulu is usually the more relevant on-demand choice, subject to network and regional availability.
- Mixed included and transactional catalog: Prime Video offers broad apparent choice, but rentals, purchases and channels cost extra.
- Scheduled network programming: YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV provide live feeds and DVR rather than a conventional fixed catalog.

Ad experience
Netflix’s ad plan includes commercials and may omit some titles. Prime Video’s standard benefit includes ads; Ultra removes ads from eligible Prime Video content, not necessarily live events or every third-party offering. Hulu’s library has ad-supported and premium variants, while live-TV channels carry the commercials built into their broadcasts.

4K and audio
Netflix ties 4K/HDR and spatial audio to Premium. Prime Video places 4K/UHD access in Ultra. Hulu’s 4K availability is title- and device-dependent. YouTube TV’s 4K Plus applies only to eligible programs and networks. A compatible television alone does not guarantee 4K.
Downloads
Netflix downloads vary by plan, device and title. Prime Video’s allowances differ between the Prime benefit and Ultra. YouTube TV offline viewing is limited to eligible DVR recordings through 4K Plus on mobile devices. Downloads can expire or be restricted by account, device and licensing rules.
Family use, devices and account rules
Netflix’s simultaneous-device limits and household rules make Premium more suitable for a single busy household than Standard. Amazon’s stream figures are subject to title, device, provider and account limits. YouTube TV’s six accounts belong to a household, with home-area and travel requirements; its unlimited-stream promise requires 4K Plus and applies at home. Hulu stream limits vary by product, so do not assume that a bundle or Hulu + Live TV permits unlimited viewing.
All four services broadly support current smart TVs, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV or Chromecast, game consoles, phones, tablets and web browsers, but exact support differs. Older televisions may play video yet lack current signup, HDR or 4K support. Netflix documents a signup limitation for some older devices at its device help page. Check app compatibility before replacing hardware, and remember that some subscriptions must be started in a browser rather than inside a television app.
Head-to-head decisions
Netflix vs. Hulu
Choose Netflix for broad originals, international shows and straightforward discovery. Choose Hulu for current-season television and stronger Disney-related bundle potential. Compare the exact ad tier, download rights and bundle contents rather than the brand names.
Netflix vs. Prime Video
Netflix is easier when you want an included catalog with fewer transactional decisions. Prime Video is more economical for an existing Prime member who also uses Amazon benefits, especially if occasional rentals and Ultra’s 4K access are useful.
Hulu + Live TV vs. YouTube TV
Choose between them by ZIP code, local affiliate, sports channel and DVR needs. Hulu + Live TV includes Hulu, Disney+ with ads and ESPN Select in the cited plan; YouTube TV emphasizes a broad live-channel lineup, household profiles and unlimited DVR. Neither should be selected solely from a national channel count.
Quick Recap
Best combinations
- Family entertainment: Netflix Standard or Premium plus one rotating service; add Hulu or a bundle only if its current-TV or Disney content is used.
- Sports household: Start with YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV, then price the specific league or network add-on and check blackouts.
- Amazon household: Keep Prime for its non-video benefits and add Ultra only when eligible 4K, downloads or reduced ads justify $4.99 more per month.
- Movie and series viewers: Use Netflix as the anchor and rotate Hulu or Prime Video month to month instead of maintaining every subscription permanently.
How to avoid overspending
- Choose one anchor service based on your dominant viewing: on-demand or live television.
- Price the useful tier, not merely the cheapest advertised tier. Include 4K, extra viewers, downloads and ad-free upgrades you actually need.
- List every add-on, premium channel, sports package and bundle component before subscribing.
- Check the renewal price, taxes, local-channel coverage and ZIP-code restrictions at checkout.
- Rotate on-demand services monthly when a particular show or film slate is the reason for subscribing.
- Cancel through the company or app store that bills you; third-party billing can have different controls and prices.

| Live sports | YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV | Verify the sport, market, channel, blackout and add-on before buying |
| Best ordinary on-demand 4K choice | Netflix Premium or Prime Video Ultra | Netflix ties 4K to Premium; Prime ties it to Ultra, so catalog preference decides |
