Best streaming service 2026: Which TV and movie platform is best for you?

Netflix is the best all-around streaming service for most US households in 2026, while Max, Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV, Peacock, Prime Video and Paramount+ suit different viewers, budgets and viewing habits.

Netflix is the best single streaming service for most US households in 2026. It offers the broadest mix of mainstream series, films, documentaries, international programs, comedy, originals and kids’ content. But it is not the best choice for everyone: Max is stronger for prestige television and serious movie fans, Disney+ and Hulu suit families, Apple TV has the most consistently premium original programming, and sports or local channels require a live-TV service rather than a conventional on-demand subscription.

This guide is US-focused. Prices and plan features were checked against available sources around August 16–18, 2026, and can change.

Quick verdict

Service Best for Price signal Main drawback
Netflix One general-purpose service Plan prices appear during signup Higher tiers cost more; catalog rotates
Max HBO, prestige drama and premium films Approximately $10.99–$22.99 monthly in 2026 comparison coverage Important features are divided between tiers
Disney+ Families and major franchises Check current standalone and bundle pricing Less compelling as an adult general-entertainment service alone
Hulu Current TV and FX-related programming Disney+/Hulu bundles from $12.99 monthly Ad and bundle restrictions vary
Apple TV High-quality originals $12.99 monthly after a seven-day trial Smaller library
Peacock NBC, Bravo, WWE and selected sports Select at $7.99 monthly Select excludes sports, movies and Peacock Originals
Prime Video Existing Amazon Prime members Ad-free Prime Video Ultra reported at $4.99 monthly Included, rental and add-on content are mixed together
Paramount+ CBS, Paramount, Nickelodeon and Showtime Approximately $8.99–$13.99 monthly in 2026 coverage More targeted than general-purpose

Prices are US figures and subject to change. The cheapest plan is not necessarily the most useful one: it may exclude 4K, downloads, sports, movies, premium channels or simultaneous streams.

What “best” actually means

There is no objective winner because streaming services solve different problems. A useful comparison considers:

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
  • Catalog breadth and the quality of the titles you actually watch.
  • Original series, films, documentaries and international programming.
  • Current-season television versus completed back catalogs.
  • Family profiles, parental controls, downloads and simultaneous streams.
  • Ad load and the limits of supposedly ad-free plans.
  • 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos availability.
  • Sports, local channels, news and DVR features.
  • Normal pricing after promotions, bundle value and cancellation flexibility.
  • Interface quality, search, recommendations and device support.

A large catalog is not automatically a better catalog. A smaller service can be better value if it consistently has the genres, franchises or sports you want.

Best overall: Netflix

Netflix is the safest recommendation for a household choosing one paid service. It combines broad mainstream appeal with original dramas, comedies, documentaries, international shows, movies, children’s programming and a mature recommendation interface.

It is particularly strong when several people in the same household watch different things. One person can follow an international drama, another can watch a documentary, and children can use their own profiles without the service feeling built around only one franchise or network.

The compromises are important. Netflix’s best picture-quality and household-use features may require a more expensive tier, and the catalog changes continually. Account-sharing rules, advertisements, downloads, simultaneous streams and 4K availability depend on the selected plan. The signup page may require you to proceed through the process before all current plan prices are displayed, so check the final price before paying: Netflix signup.

Choose Netflix if: you want one broad service and do not have a specific sports, network or franchise requirement.

Choose something else if: your main goal is HBO programming, Disney franchises, current broadcast television, local channels or a specific sports package.

Best by viewer type

Best for prestige TV and serious movie fans: Max

Max is the strongest choice when quality matters more than sheer volume. HBO programming, Warner Bros. films, major franchises, high-end drama and comedy give it a more curated premium identity than a general catalog service.

The main issue is tier fragmentation. Ad-supported access, ad-free viewing, 4K and HDR, downloads and simultaneous streams are not necessarily included together. 2026 comparison coverage places the US tiers at approximately $10.99, $18.49 and $22.99 per month, but verify the current plans directly at Max before subscribing.

Best fit: viewers who would rather pay for a smaller selection of premium television and films than browse a larger mixed library.

Best for families: Disney+, usually with Hulu

Disney+ is the obvious choice for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and children’s programming. Its value is clearest when a household regularly watches those brands.

For adults who also want current television, FX programming and Hulu Originals, the Disney+/Hulu bundle is usually more useful than Disney+ alone. Hulu’s official pages show bundles beginning at $12.99 monthly and a premium option at $19.99, though included services and prices can change. The bundle experience may also differ depending on where billing and viewing are managed.

Hulu’s standalone pages list an ad-supported plan at $11.99 monthly and an annual offer at $119.99. Check the current options at Hulu before choosing between standalone and bundled billing.

Best for current television: Hulu

Hulu is a better starting point than Netflix for viewers whose priority is current television rather than a large collection of bingeable originals. It is especially relevant for broadcast-style programming, reality and competition shows, FX-related titles and general entertainment.

Do not assume “no ads” means literally no interruptions in every program. Hulu says some licensed shows can retain a short ad break before and after an episode because of streaming rights: Hulu’s no-ads explanation.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Best for high-quality originals: Apple TV

Apple TV is the best fit for viewers who prefer a smaller, consistently polished slate of dramas, comedies, science fiction and films. It is a poor substitute for a huge back catalog, but a strong complement to Netflix or a service you rotate in for several months at a time.

Apple lists the US service at $12.99 per month after a seven-day trial. It supports family sharing with up to five family members and is available across Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, Android, Windows and the web. Availability and features can vary by country and device; see Apple TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple TV also has US sports rights, including Friday Night Baseball. Apple’s page states that every MLS match and Formula 1 Grand Prix will be available beginning in 2026. Treat those rights as season- and geography-specific rather than permanent worldwide features.

Best for NBC, Bravo, WWE and selected sports: Peacock

Peacock is a strong targeted subscription for NBC and Bravo programming, Universal-related films, WWE and selected live sports. It is also useful as a temporary subscription during a particular sports season or show run.

The official plan page lists Select at $7.99 per month with ads. However, Peacock explicitly says Select excludes sports, movies and Peacock Originals, so it should not be treated as a full-catalog plan. Check the higher tiers at Peacock’s plan page.

Best for Amazon households: Prime Video

Prime Video is most compelling when you already pay for Amazon Prime and value the wider membership, including delivery, music, Kindle benefits and other services. Comparing it directly with a pure streaming subscription can be misleading because Prime Video also mixes included titles with rentals, purchases and add-on channels.

Amazon’s 2026 announcement describes Prime Video Ultra as a $4.99 monthly upgrade adding ad-free viewing, up to five concurrent streams, up to 100 downloads and exclusive 4K/UHD access. Some live or ad-supported content may still contain advertising. Details are available from Amazon.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Best for CBS, Paramount and Nickelodeon: Paramount+

Paramount+ makes sense for viewers who specifically want CBS programming, Paramount films, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, selected sports and, on the higher plan, Showtime content.

2026 comparison coverage reports an Essential plan around $8.99 monthly and a Premium plan around $13.99. Premium is reported to add ad-free viewing, Showtime content, offline downloads and a live local CBS feed. Confirm current prices and inclusions at Paramount+.

Movies: which service is strongest?

The answer depends on what “best movies” means:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Broad mainstream selection: Netflix or Prime Video, although titles rotate and Prime Video may place rentals beside included films.
  • Prestige and studio catalog: Max.
  • Family blockbusters: Disney+.
  • Original films and polished productions: Apple TV.
  • Universal-related and rotating theatrical titles: Peacock, subject to the selected plan.
  • Paramount franchises: Paramount+.

A streaming subscription is access, not ownership. If you want to watch one specific film immediately, renting or buying it digitally may be cheaper than subscribing for a month. If a film is essential, check its availability immediately before signing up because licensing can change.

TV: weekly releases, back catalogs and current episodes

Netflix is strongest for volume, international releases and complete seasons designed for binge viewing. Hulu is usually the better fit for current television and FX-related programming. Apple TV emphasizes a smaller number of original series released on a regular schedule. Max is strongest when the desired show is HBO or part of Warner’s premium catalog.

Families should check not only whether a title exists but whether it is available in the household’s plan, app and region. Anime, specialist genres, adult animation and international programming may be better served by dedicated services not included in this comparison.

Ads, ad-free plans and picture quality

“Ad-free” has exceptions

Ad-free generally means fewer or no conventional commercial breaks in the on-demand catalog. It does not necessarily remove advertising from live sports, live channels, sponsorships, promotional messages or every licensed title. Hulu specifically documents exceptions around some licensed programming.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

The cheapest ad-supported plans may also restrict downloads, picture quality, simultaneous streams or access to particular movies and sports. Compare the actual plan benefits, not just the word “premium.”

4K is a chain, not a switch

A service advertising 4K does not mean every title is available in 4K. Effective quality depends on:

  • The plan tier.
  • The title’s available resolution.
  • HDR format support, such as HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.
  • Dolby Atmos or other audio availability.
  • The television, streaming box, app and HDMI setup.
  • Internet speed and network stability.
  • Whether downloads support the same resolution as streaming.

Sports can have different technical limits from on-demand shows. Check the exact title and device combination if home-theater quality is a deciding factor.

On-demand streaming is not cable replacement

Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Prime Video, Apple TV, Peacock and Paramount+ are primarily on-demand services. They do not automatically provide local broadcast channels, every sports network, live news or a traditional DVR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need local channels, scheduled programming, sports networks and cloud DVR, compare live-TV services such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Fubo, DirecTV Stream and Philo. Hulu’s official page lists Hulu + Live TV at $89.99 per month after its promotional period, illustrating why a cable replacement belongs in a separate price category: Hulu + Live TV.

An antenna may be a better solution for local broadcast channels, while a sport-specific subscription may be cheaper than a full live-TV package if you only follow one league.

The best combinations

Household Practical combination Why it works
Minimal Netflix or Hulu plus free ad-supported services One paid generalist covers most viewing without a large recurring bill
Family Disney+/Hulu bundle Children’s franchises and broader adult programming in one arrangement
Prestige-focused Max plus Apple TV, rotated as needed Premium scripted programming without retaining every service year-round
Amazon household Prime Video plus one rotating service Uses an existing membership as the base
Sports household Live-TV service or sport-specific subscription, with targeted add-ons Better access to local channels and sports networks
Budget movie household One paid service at a time, plus rentals when necessary Avoids paying monthly for a single film

How to reduce your streaming bill

  1. Keep one base service. Netflix is the broadest default; Hulu, Disney+ or Prime Video may be better if your household has a specific focus.
  2. Rotate the rest. Subscribe when a desired series, film collection or sports season is active, then cancel.
  3. Cancel after signing up when appropriate. Many services allow access through the paid billing period after cancellation, but check the confirmation screen and terms.
  4. Use annual plans selectively. An annual plan is worthwhile only if you expect to keep using the service throughout the year.
  5. Compare bundles. Disney+/Hulu, Apple TV/Peacock and other bundles can beat separate subscriptions, but only if you will use both services.
  6. Check existing benefits. Mobile, broadband, retail, credit-card and Prime memberships may already include a service or discount.
  7. Audit ad-free upgrades. Frequent viewers may value fewer interruptions, downloads and better quality; occasional viewers may not.
  8. Use free services and an antenna. Free ad-supported platforms and over-the-air broadcast television can reduce the need for another paid subscription. Availability, branding and catalogs change, so verify the current service in your area.

Before you subscribe

  • Is the desired title available now in your country?
  • Is it included in the cheapest plan, or does it require a premium tier, bundle or add-on?
  • Does the plan include the sports, movies, downloads or local channels you need?
  • Will the household need 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos or more simultaneous streams?
  • What is the regular price after the promotion ends?
  • Is the subscription billed by the service, an app store or a bundle partner?
  • Can every household member use it under the service’s current sharing rules?
  • Would renting one film or subscribing for one month be cheaper than keeping the service all year?

Final decision tree

  • Want one service for almost everything? Start with Netflix.
  • Want HBO, prestige drama and premium movies? Choose Max.
  • Have children or mainly watch Disney, Marvel and Star Wars? Choose Disney+, usually with Hulu if adults want broader TV.
  • Want current television and FX-related shows? Choose Hulu.
  • Want a small but consistently premium original slate? Choose Apple TV.
  • Already pay for Amazon Prime? Try Prime Video before adding another generalist service.
  • Want NBC, Bravo, WWE or selected sports? Choose Peacock, but check the tier restrictions.
  • Want CBS, Paramount, Nickelodeon or Showtime? Choose Paramount+.
  • Want local channels, news and sports networks? Choose a live-TV service or antenna rather than treating Netflix as a cable replacement.
