Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For most YouTube creators, the choice comes down to workflow: StreamElements suits creators who want to build an overlay in a browser-based editor and add it to broadcast software as one browser source; Streamlabs’ OBS plugin suits creators who already use OBS Studio and want Streamlabs tools in that setup. Neither is a universal winner. Check your operating system and whether the features you want are free before choosing.
What a streaming overlay does
An overlay is a visual layer shown over your broadcast: for example, alerts, labels, goals, chat, or other widgets. It is separate from the video itself. Your broadcast software displays it as part of the on-screen composition, so the right tool depends partly on how you already produce your stream.
StreamElements: build in its editor, add one browser source
StreamElements documents a workflow in which you compose alerts, labels, goals, chat, and widgets in its Overlay Editor, then render the overlay in broadcast software through a single browser source. You can start without coding; developers can also build custom widget behavior when the built-in options are not enough. The vendor currently advertises customizable alerts and widgets as free, a vendor claim rather than an independent guarantee. See StreamElements.
- Good fit: You want a browser-based editor and a single-source integration, with the possibility of custom widget code.
- Check first: Confirm that the specific widgets and integrations you need are available for your setup.
Streamlabs: add its tools to OBS Studio
Streamlabs’ OBS plugin brings Streamlabs overlays, widgets, alerts, and other tools into OBS. Streamlabs distinguishes this plugin from its all-in-one Streamlabs Desktop software. The vendor says the plugin is free to download and use, but some premium overlays and server-side multistreaming require Ultra. Its plugin page currently identifies Windows as the supported operating system. Recheck compatibility and plan details before committing, since these can change. See the Streamlabs OBS plugin.

How to choose for your broadcast
- Start with your broadcast software. If you already use OBS Studio, the Streamlabs plugin is designed to add Streamlabs tools there. If you prefer composing an overlay in a separate editor and bringing it into broadcast software as one browser source, consider StreamElements.
- List the on-screen elements you actually need. Check that the desired alerts, chat, goals, labels, and integrations are supported by the tool and the plan you intend to use.
- Verify your operating system and plan limits. In particular, the Streamlabs plugin’s current stated Windows-only support and its Ultra requirements for some features may be decisive.
- Preview the full scene before going live. Check that text, alerts, and other overlay elements are legible and do not obscure the content. Confirm the overlay is visible in your broadcast software’s preview before starting the YouTube broadcast.
There is no evidence here that one tool delivers better stream quality, uses fewer computer resources, or increases engagement. Choose by workflow, compatibility, customization needs, and the features included in the relevant plan—not by an unsupported performance ranking.

Optional: control scenes with a Stream Deck
An Elgato Stream Deck is a programmable control accessory, not overlay-creation software. A peer-reviewed 2022 study describes streamers using programmable buttons to control OBS functions such as changing scenes, muting audio, and skipping donation messages. The study’s design-space analysis drew on 40 YouTube setup videos; that is its sample, not a measure of how common these tools are among streamers. Consider this kind of controller only if physical buttons would help you operate a live show. Read the study by Ian Drosos and Philip J. Guo, ACM DIS 2022.
