For a live talk show built around remote guests, start with StreamYard: its browser-based studio is designed for guest access, on-screen production, and multistreaming. Choose OBS Studio if you want more control over custom scenes and audio and are comfortable setting up desktop software. For a Mac-based interview show, Ecamm Live combines live production with remote interviews and local recording. If your priority is recording interviews to edit and repurpose rather than producing a live show, consider Riverside.
These are capability-based fits, not winners from hands-on testing or an independent benchmark. The right choice depends chiefly on how guests join, how much production control you need, and whether live distribution or post-production is the main job.
Choose software by the show you want to make
| What matters most | Good place to start | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Simple remote guest access and a browser-based live studio | StreamYard | Guests can join from a browser or phone without downloading software; the vendor also describes a guest greenroom and multistreaming. |
| Custom scenes, source mixing, and audio control | OBS Studio | Free, open-source desktop software with customizable scenes, audio filters, transitions, and preview tools; expect more setup. |
| Mac-based live interviews and local recording | Ecamm Live | Mac production tools, remote guests, overlays, scenes, and separate recording tracks, subject to Mac and network requirements. |
| Recording, editing, and repurposing interviews | Riverside | Its homepage positions the service around recording, editing, repurposing, and distributing content; current live-stream plan limits are not established here. |
Guest onboarding and production control are different problems. A guest-friendly studio can reduce friction for contributors who are not technically confident, while a scene-based desktop tool gives the host more responsibility for assembling sources and managing the show. Recording requirements also matter: separate audio and video files can give an editor more flexibility than a finished program recording.
What each option is suited to
StreamYard: browser-based guest production
StreamYard describes itself as a browser-based live streaming and recording studio. Its official site says guests can join through a browser or phone without installing software, and describes multistreaming and local recordings. The vendor’s Help Center says paid plans include a guest greenroom, up to ten on-screen participants, simultaneous streaming, custom RTMP destinations, and HD broadcast recordings of up to ten hours per stream. These capabilities are vendor-stated; check the current plan mapping and limits before choosing a subscription. StreamYard’s paid-plan feature details.

OBS Studio: flexible desktop production
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as free and open-source video recording and live streaming software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It supports scenes assembled from sources such as webcams, images, text, browser windows, and capture cards, as well as audio filters, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode preview, and Multiview. The reviewed OBS documentation does not establish a built-in remote guest room, so plan separately for getting remote participants into the production. See the OBS Project’s current feature and download information.
The OBS Project page reviewed for this article listed version 32.2.2, dated August 14, 2026, and Windows 10/11 and macOS 13.0 or newer among its platform details. Software versions and system requirements change, so confirm compatibility on the official page before installation.

Ecamm Live: Mac production with interviews
Ecamm’s Help Center describes a Mac app that can stream to up to ten destinations and host up to ten remote interview guests on Apple Silicon Macs; it lists four remote guests for Intel Macs. It also describes automatic recording to the Mac, separate audio and video tracks, scenes, overlays, and external camera support. These are vendor-listed capabilities, not a performance comparison. Check Ecamm’s feature and system details.
Ecamm states a minimum of macOS 11.2 and recommends a Mac manufactured in 2020 or later. Its Help Center lists 2 Mbps upload as a general minimum, 6 Mbps for 1080p, and recommends 10 Mbps for Interview mode. Treat these as the vendor’s stated requirements and recommendations; actual network conditions and other devices sharing the connection can affect a live production.

Riverside: recording-first interviews
Riverside positions itself around recording, editing, repurposing, and distributing studio-quality content. It is relevant when the central deliverable is an interview to edit into a documentary, podcast, or clips. The material available for this comparison does not establish current live-stream plan limits or equivalent guest and destination counts, so verify those details directly if live distribution is essential.

A practical selection process
- Decide whether the show is live-first or edit-first. For a live conversation with guests, prioritize joining friction, greenroom or backstage preparation, and the host’s ability to manage the screen. For interviews that will be edited later, prioritize recording format, separate tracks, and the intended post-production workflow.
- Check the guest experience. Ask guests to join from the kind of device and connection they will actually use. Confirm whether they need an account or download, how they enter, and whether the host can prepare them off-air. StreamYard describes browser/phone access and a greenroom on paid plans; Ecamm’s remote interview capacity depends on Mac generation.
- Match control to your production skills. If you need layered scenes, custom source layouts, audio filters, and hotkey control, OBS offers those tools but requires configuration. If a browser studio better suits your workflow, compare StreamYard’s current plan capabilities. Mac users can evaluate Ecamm’s scene and interview workflow.
- Verify recording deliverables before the first interview. Determine whether you need a finished program recording, separate participant audio and video, or both. Check recording duration, storage, file formats, and the plan-specific caps with the vendor.
- Test the actual room and network. Use the host computer, camera, microphone, and internet connection intended for the show. For Ecamm, compare your Mac and upload speed against its stated requirements; for any option, leave bandwidth headroom for other household or office traffic.
- Confirm destinations and costs. Verify the services you need to publish to, whether simultaneous streaming is included, and whether a destination requires custom RTMP. Subscription pricing and caps change, and the reviewed sources do not establish a complete like-for-like price table.
Make the recording useful after the interview
For a documentary channel or interview series, the live broadcast is only one output. Before recording, agree with the guest on the topics and intended use, choose a quiet room, check framing and lighting, and capture a short audio test. If the production tool supports separate tracks, record them and keep an untouched backup where practical; separate files can make it easier to balance voices, remove interruptions, and create excerpts.
Use music, archival footage, photographs, and clips only when you have the rights or a valid basis to use them. A guest’s permission to appear does not automatically clear third-party material they show or play. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from a streaming application’s technical ability to broadcast; review YouTube’s current rules and secure necessary permissions before using copyrighted material.

When continuous prerecorded YouTube streaming is the actual need
Talk-show software is for producing a live program with a host, guests, and production controls.
