If you’re looking for the best Squishmallows from 2022, start with the Pokémon collaboration: 12-inch Pikachu and Gengar were the first official Pokémon Squishmallows. They’re notable documented releases, not winners of an official character ranking. The Toy Foundation named Squishmallows its 2022 Toy of the Year and People’s Choice winner, but those awards recognized the brand rather than specific characters.
This guide highlights options with documented 2022 releases or recognition. It compares character appeal, line and size, likely use, and what to check when evaluating a present-day listing. The available evidence does not establish a complete ranked list of 2022 characters, model-by-model collector demand, or current prices.
Which Squishmallows stand out from 2022?
The clearest character-specific picks are Pikachu and Gengar from the first official Pokémon Squishmallows release. For someone more interested in miniatures than a standard plush, the Fall 2022 Squishville guide documents series 6 and 7 and vehicles. These are different kinds of collectibles, so the right choice depends on whether you want a character plush for display or cuddling, or a small collectible set.
| Option | What is documented | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 12-inch Pikachu | Identified as one of the first official Pokémon Squishmallows in Jazwares’ December 2022 release article. | Pokémon fans who want a recognizable character plush. |
| 12-inch Gengar | Identified alongside Pikachu as one of the first official Pokémon Squishmallows in the December 2022 article. | Pokémon fans drawn to Gengar’s character design. |
| Squishville series 6 and 7, and vehicles | Documented in the Fall 2022 Squishville guide as part of a miniature collectible range. | Collectors who prefer miniatures and related vehicles over a standard-size plush. |
These are documented standouts, not a definitive “best of” ranking. The available sources do not establish every 2022 character, a comparative quality test, or which individual models collectors valued most.

Why Pikachu and Gengar are the strongest character-specific picks
Jazwares announced a Squishmallows and Pokémon collaboration in July 2022. Its December release article identified 12-inch Pikachu and Gengar as the collaboration’s first official Pokémon Squishmallows. That makes them the best-supported character-specific choices in a 2022 guide: both the licensed collaboration and the initial characters are documented by the company.
At launch, the article reported a retail price of $29.99 and availability through Pokémon Center. It also said the 12-inch versions had sold out there and that new sizes were expected at other retailers in spring. Those statements describe the 2022 launch period only; they do not establish present-day stock, price, or availability.

Choose Pikachu for the instantly recognizable character
Pikachu is the straightforward pick if you want the Pokémon character most readily recognized by casual fans. The source documents the 12-inch size, but does not establish that this character appeared in every size shown on a current Squishmallows size chart.
Choose Gengar for a different Pokémon display piece
Gengar gives Pokémon fans an alternative to Pikachu while sharing the same documented 12-inch launch size. The release evidence supports the character and size, not a claim that one is rarer, more valuable, or more popular than the other.

When Squishville is a better fit
Squishville is an adjacent miniature collectible range, not another name for a standard-size Squishmallows plush. The Fall 2022 guide covers series 6 and 7 and vehicles. Consider it if you want small figures or vehicle-themed collecting; choose a standard plush if your priority is a larger character to display or cuddle.
The guide documents those parts of the range, but does not establish a complete catalogue of every Fall 2022 miniature or a ranking of the series. Verify the exact character, set contents, and scale in any listing before buying.

What Squishmallows’ 2022 awards and milestones tell you
The Toy Foundation named Squishmallows its 2022 Toy of the Year and People’s Choice winner. The expert panel selected Toy of the Year, while consumers selected People’s Choice. Both awards recognized Squishmallows as a brand; neither ranks Pikachu, Gengar, or other individual characters.
In a May 24, 2022 release, Jazwares attributed the descriptions “#2 Toy Property” and “#1 Plush” to The NPD Group’s April 2022 report and reported that 125 million plush had been sold. These are historical figures reported by Jazwares, not current rankings or independent verification of individual models.

Jazwares also said in a June 29, 2022 article that more than 125 million toys had sold and that the brand had 1,000 variations since its 2017 launch. The same article reported that more than 10,000 Squishmallows were given away at VidCon. These company-reported figures help explain the brand’s reach at the time, but do not identify which 2022 characters were best or hardest to find.
At the time of the awards, Pamela Mastrota, executive director of The Toy Foundation, said: “On top of the joy a toy can offer, Squishmallows is a powerful example of the emotional benefits children and adults can gain through play.” This is her attributed comment about play, not clinical evidence of a health benefit.
How to assess a Squishmallows listing today
A historical launch article or a current size guide cannot confirm that a particular 2022 model is available now. Jazwares’ support page lists multiple standard sizes and notes that size availability varies by retailer; it does not prove that each 2022 character was released in every listed size.
- Match the product precisely: check that the listing names the character and gives the same size as the item you want.
- Check who is selling it: review the seller and listing details rather than treating a marketplace search result as proof of official availability.
- Review condition: for a pre-owned plush, check the seller’s description and photographs for wear, damage, or missing tags.
- Look for authenticity evidence: compare identifying details in the listing with official product information where available. A character name alone does not establish that an item is authentic.
- Compare the actual offer: confirm the current price, shipping, and return terms on the live listing. The 2022 launch price is not a guide to today’s price.
For Pikachu and Gengar, a useful search phrase is “12 inch Pikachu Squishmallow plush” or “12 inch Gengar Squishmallow plush.” Treat the results as leads, then verify the exact size, seller, condition, and authenticity details before deciding.
