For looping one prerecorded video from your computer, start with OBS Studio. Add the file as a Media Source and enable Loop. For a rotating set of videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. If you need a YouTube stream to keep running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud.
Which software should you choose?
| Option | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Looping a video or playlist from a computer, with control over scenes and overlays | Media Source loops one file; VLC Video supports playlists. The computer and network must remain available. |
| StreamNeo | Keeping uploaded videos streaming to YouTube without running a computer at home | It loops videos from the cloud. One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps. |
OBS is the direct do-it-yourself choice for local playback. StreamNeo is the cloud option for continuous operation without a local computer running.
Loop a single video with OBS Studio
- Confirm YouTube Live access. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restrictions in the prior 90 days to start streaming. In YouTube Studio, choose the encoder streaming workflow for a media source. See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
- Configure OBS. Open OBS and add a Media Source to the scene. Select the local video file and turn on Loop in the source properties. OBS restarts playback when the file reaches its end. See OBS Media Sources.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Use YouTube Studio’s encoder setup and the stream key shown there to connect the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Preview before going live. Check the YouTube preview, then start the stream from OBS when the picture and sound are correct. YouTube advises previewing and monitoring the broadcast.
- Keep the local setup available. OBS is running on your computer, so the computer, OBS, and network connection need to remain available for the broadcast to continue. Test the setup for a few minutes before relying on it for a scheduled or important stream; the OBS Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings.
Loop a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC if it is not already on the computer. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to a scene and add the files in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties, then preview playback to confirm the files advance and repeat as intended.
- Connect and monitor the YouTube encoder stream as described above. The playlist continues locally only while the computer and connection remain available.
OBS documents both single-file looping and playlist looping in its Media Sources guide.
What to check before streaming prerecorded material
- Content rights and platform rules: YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other included material; a recording being publicly available does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it.
- Audio and picture: Use the preview to catch missing audio, black frames, wrong aspect ratio, or an unexpected scene before viewers see the stream. Monitor quality while it is live.
- Continuity: A local OBS stream depends on the computer and network staying available. For a long-running stream, decide how you will handle power, connection interruptions, and supervision.
- Test playback: Check the loop transition or playlist order in advance, and test the encoder setup for a few minutes before a consequential broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for prerecorded videos streamed to YouTube: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
