Set up video rotation with OBS Studio
1. Make sure your channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-stream setup requirements and the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before preparing a long-running broadcast.

2. Choose a single-file loop or playlist
- One video: In OBS, add a Media Source, choose the local file, and enable Loop. This is the straightforward choice when the same recording should repeat.
- Several videos: Install VLC, then add a VLC Video source in OBS and add the files to its playlist. Use Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence or Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details required by the setup. If using a custom RTMP destination, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the corresponding fields.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start streaming from OBS, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the incoming signal is healthy before directing viewers to the live page.
YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the stream URL and key workflow. Verify the current resolution and format guidance in YouTube’s live-stream setup page; the appropriate settings depend on your source files, encoder, and connection.

Plan for sessions, replays, and content rules
Long-running sessions and archives
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” For a continuous stream that runs beyond that threshold, do not promise viewers one complete replay; check current behavior in Studio and decide how you will handle sessions and archives. YouTube encoder guidance
Rights and monetization
Use recordings you have the rights to broadcast. Copyright permission is not the only consideration for monetization: YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and assess whether content is original and authentic. Mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or reused material can affect eligibility, and permission to use material by itself does not guarantee monetization. Review YouTube’s monetization policies, including its July 15, 2025 terminology update.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream will not start: Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements, and check that the stream URL and key in the encoder match the current event in Studio.
- The playlist does not advance or repeat: Check that you added a VLC Video source, that VLC is installed, and that the intended Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist control is enabled.
- The broadcast stops when you leave: OBS is running on your local computer, so check that the computer has not slept, shut down, or lost its network connection.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Check whether the stream exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive threshold and review the archive in Studio before promising a complete replay.
- Playback is interrupted after a connection drop: Check the local network and OBS status, then confirm whether YouTube is receiving the signal again in Studio. The listed software and hardware options are not guarantees of uninterrupted service.
