For most former Google Podcasts listeners, Pocket Casts is the best all-around replacement: it is podcast-focused, supports OPML subscription imports, and works across phones and computers. Google’s official successor is YouTube Music, but it is not a one-for-one substitute. Android power users may prefer Podcast Addict, while AntennaPod is the free, open-source Android choice. On iPhone, choose Overcast for speech-focused playback or Apple Podcasts for Apple-device simplicity.
What happened to Google Podcasts?
Google discontinued Google Podcasts and directed listeners to YouTube Music. Its migration options included transferring subscriptions to YouTube Music or exporting them as an OPML file for another app. YouTube Music is the official successor, but it combines podcasts with music and video rather than recreating Google Podcasts’ simpler podcast-first experience.
How to move your subscriptions
OPML is a file that records podcast subscriptions. It is generally a way to move the shows you follow—not your listening history, episode progress, downloads, queues, playlists, or app settings. A destination app must support OPML import, and a show may not match if its feed or directory listing has changed.

- Find and export your Google Podcasts subscriptions as an OPML file, using the migration option described in Google’s announcement.
- Save a backup copy of the file somewhere you can access from your new device.
- Install an app that supports OPML import, such as Pocket Casts; follow that app’s import instructions. Pocket Casts documents its OPML import.
- Review the imported list and search for missing shows by title or publisher. If needed, add a current RSS feed manually.
- Rebuild queues, downloads, filters, and playback settings, and keep the OPML backup until you have checked the new library.
Do not expect an OPML file to restore where you stopped listening. If you have already moved to YouTube Music and want a podcast-focused library, you can still move subscriptions again if you have an export.

Important YouTube Music caveat: Google’s support-community guidance says YouTube Music does not accept OPML imports; because this is community guidance rather than formal product documentation, check the current app guidance before relying on it. If a show is missing, Google documents adding it by RSS: in the app, tap Library, then Podcast, choose Add podcast, select Add a podcast by RSS feed, accept the disclaimer, enter the feed URL, and tap Add. The show may take a few minutes to appear. RSS-added shows have fewer features than native listings, including no audio/video switching, likes or dislikes, sharing, channel pages, reporting, or captions. Pocket Casts: best overall replacement
Best for: listeners who want a dedicated podcast app across more than one device. Pocket Casts supports iOS and Android, offers web and desktop access, and documents OPML import. Its podcast-first library and cross-device reach make it a stronger default for many former Google Podcasts users than a combined music service. Visit Pocket Casts or its OPML guide.

The trade-off is that some advanced features require a paid plan, and its richer toolkit may be more than someone seeking the bare-minimum interface wants. Check the current plan and feature list in your region rather than relying on old price comparisons. Choose Pocket Casts for balance and flexibility, not because it is an exact visual clone of Google Podcasts.

YouTube Music: Google’s official successor
Best for: listeners already using YouTube or YouTube Music, especially those who want video podcasts in the same service. It is Google’s intended destination, supports RSS additions for missing shows, and brings audio and video together. Google says most podcasts can play in the background without Premium, and podcast downloads may be available without Premium depending on the show or episode. However, podcast availability and download modes vary; Smart Downloads and full-show downloads are not available for podcasts according to Google’s offline-download help. Premium benefits for music do not necessarily remove podcast ads, and podcast-specific behavior can differ. See Google’s pages on background play and Premium benefits.
YouTube Music is not the best choice if your priority is an organized, podcast-only library or an easy OPML import. RSS-added shows also lack some features available to native listings. Pick it for Google continuity and video, not because it duplicates Google Podcasts.

Podcast Addict: best for Android power users

AntennaPod: best free and open-source Android option
Best for: Android listeners who want an open-source, RSS-oriented podcast client without a conventional paid app tier. It is a good alternative to a large music ecosystem, but it has no iOS version and is not the best fit if polished cross-device syncing is essential. Overcast: best iPhone choice for playback control
Best for: iPhone and iPad listeners who spend a lot of time with speech-heavy shows and value tools such as silence reduction and voice enhancement. Overcast is a dedicated listening experience rather than a music-and-podcast bundle. It is iOS-focused, so mixed-device households may prefer Pocket Casts. Check its current App Store or official-site details for plan features at Overcast.
Apple Podcasts: easiest for Apple users
Best for: people already using iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch who want a familiar built-in option. Basic listening is distinct from paid subscriptions offered by individual podcast creators; those subscriptions are not required to use the app generally. Apple integration is convenient, but Android and Windows-first listeners should look elsewhere, and power users may want more organization or playback customization. See Apple Podcasts.
Spotify: convenient if it is already your music app
Best for: existing Spotify users who value one familiar service for music and podcasts, discovery, and supported video shows. Spotify is available across platforms, but it is less podcast-focused than a dedicated RSS player. The comparison source lists it as not supporting OPML import, so moving subscriptions may mean following shows manually. - Want the strongest all-around dedicated replacement? Start with Pocket Casts.
- Use Android and want deep controls? Try Podcast Addict.
- Use Android and prefer free, open-source software? Try AntennaPod.
- Use an iPhone and care most about speech playback? Choose Overcast.
- Use Apple devices and want simple integration? Choose Apple Podcasts.
- Want Google continuity or video podcasts? Choose YouTube Music, understanding its podcast-specific limits.
- Already pay for Spotify and want convenience? Try Spotify, but expect a less direct subscription migration.
For car listening, verify support for your exact setup—Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, or a built-in system—rather than assuming that phone availability guarantees identical controls. If you use private or unlisted feeds for memberships, courses, or work, check the feed’s authentication requirements and the app’s support before switching; methods vary. A private-podcast compatibility guide lists several apps with relevant support, but compatibility can depend on the feed and login method.
When a subscription import goes wrong
If only some shows appear, the feed may have changed, become private or unavailable, or the old subscription may have pointed to a platform-specific listing rather than a stable RSS URL. Search the exact show title and publisher, then check the show’s official site for its current feed. Add that feed manually if your app supports it, and confirm that you found the right edition. Video availability is also not guaranteed: a creator must publish a video version, and an audio feed does not automatically supply one. YouTube describes a podcast as a playlist of videos, so availability depends on how the creator publishes the show; see YouTube’s podcast format guidance.
