For a strong starting shortlist, choose Toy Story for animation history and friendship, Finding Nemo for family adventure, Inside Out for an inventive emotional premise, or WALL•E for science fiction and visual storytelling. Pixar’s most memorable characters endure because their relationships and feelings give imaginative worlds a human center.
What are the best Pixar movies?
This is an editorial shortlist, not a scored ranking or claim of critical consensus. The films below stand out for different reasons: a technical milestone, a family bond, a fresh way to depict emotion, or a story told through a science-fiction world. The best choice depends on what you want from a movie.
| Film | Why it stands out | Central characters | Good starting point for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toy Story (1995) | Disney describes it as the first fully computer-animated feature film. Its technical breakthrough is joined to a story about an evolving friendship. | Woody and Buzz Lightyear | Animation history, comedy, and friendship |
| Finding Nemo (2003) | A family adventure that combines comedy and heartfelt emotion with underwater imagery. Disney’s 2003 annual report said it had surpassed The Lion King to become the most successful animated feature at that time—a historical distinction, not a current ranking. | Marlin and Nemo | Family journeys and colorful adventure |
| Inside Out (2015) | It turns a girl’s inner life into a story about personified emotions. Disney reports the film earned $859 million in 2015 and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. | Riley and the emotions | High-concept storytelling and feelings |
| WALL•E | A science-fiction story led by a lonely robot who discovers a new purpose and meets EVE, a search robot. | WALL•E and EVE | Visual storytelling and science fiction |
These films also differ in how they connect to larger franchises. Toy Story and Inside Out have sequels and ongoing franchise activity; the original films still provide clear ways into their stories. The recommendations here focus on what each movie offers, rather than on box-office totals or a universal order of merit.
Which Pixar characters are the most memorable?
Memorable characters are more than instantly recognizable designs: their relationships, choices, and emotional stakes make the stories stick. Disney identifies Woody and Buzz as iconic characters, but each film on this shortlist has a distinct relationship at its center.

Woody and Buzz Lightyear: friendship that changes
In Toy Story, Woody and Buzz make the film’s animation milestone matter as a character story. Their shifting relationship gives the imaginative premise its emotional movement. Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter later described the principle behind the film: “What we did understand early on was that the film’s success would depend on the strength of its story and characters. Without that, even the world’s first fully computer-animated feature would just be a gimmick.” Disney’s 2026 retrospective attributes the comments to Docter.
Marlin and Nemo: a family bond under pressure
Finding Nemo builds its adventure around a parent and child. Marlin’s connection to Nemo gives the underwater journey its personal stakes, while comedy and vivid imagery keep the film from becoming a simple survival story.

Riley and the emotions: characters inside a mind
Inside Out makes its characters a way to explore Riley’s inner world. The personified emotions turn an abstract subject into a cast and a story, making this a natural pick for viewers who like imaginative premises with an emotional focus. Inside Out 2 extends that franchise: Disney reported that it crossed $1 billion worldwide in 19 days in 2024, a separate figure from the company’s report on the 2015 original.
WALL•E and EVE: connection in a science-fiction setting
WALL•E centers on a robot who finds a new purpose and meets EVE, a search robot. Their encounter makes the film’s science-fiction premise personal; the story is a good fit for viewers drawn to visual storytelling and a less conventional setting. Disney’s film-slate announcement describes the characters and premise.

Why Pixar’s history is also a story about characters
Pixar’s history joins technical experimentation to expressive storytelling. Disney’s account links the studio’s roots at Lucasfilm’s Computer Division and early shorts such as Luxo Jr. to the idea that computer animation could communicate personality and emotion. Toy Story carried that idea into a feature: the new technology drew attention, but Woody and Buzz gave audiences characters to care about.
The studio’s reach now extends beyond theatrical films. Disney reported that Toy Story 5 drew 20 million global Disney+ views in its first five streaming days and that the Toy Story film franchise had accumulated more than 2 billion global streaming hours on Disney+ as of its September 28, 2026 article. Those are Disney-reported platform figures, not an independent measure of quality or a comparison with other franchises. Disney’s September 2026 report gives the figures and timeframe.

What the numbers can—and cannot—tell you
Box-office and streaming figures show reach, not whether a film will be your favorite. Disney’s 2024 figures for Inside Out and Inside Out 2 refer to separate movies and specific milestones. For Toy Story, Disney’s 2026 retrospective reports more than $500 million globally, while a 2025 anniversary article says nearly $400 million. The company pages do not explain the difference in accounting basis, so neither figure should be presented as a reconciled lifetime total. The 2026 retrospective and the 2025 anniversary article are the two Disney reports.
That distinction matters when using commercial success to make a recommendation. A film’s historical importance, character relationships, premise, and emotional focus are more useful guides to choosing what to watch than a box-office milestone alone.
Finding films and character merchandise
Pixar stories have extended into consumer products and other media, but availability is not guaranteed by a character’s popularity. If you are searching for a collection, treat “Pixar movies Blu-ray collection” as a category query, not confirmation of a current product. Before buying, check the listing’s format, edition, included films, seller, and stock. Check local Disney+ availability separately if you would rather stream.
