There was no single winner across the best games, movies, TV shows, and comics of 2022: the answer depends on who made the list and how. The Game Awards named Elden Ring its Game of the Year; GameSpot chose Everything Everywhere All at Once as its top movie and Severance as its TV show of the year; IMDb’s page-view rankings instead put The Batman first among 2022 U.S. movie releases and Stranger Things first among series with new episodes that year. For comics, the available evidence confirms a category but not named winners.
How to read “best of 2022” lists
These selections use different measures, so they should not be merged into one supposedly definitive ranking. The Game Awards reports category winners; GameSpot publishes staff and editorial picks; AFI selects groups of films and television programs; IMDb ranks popularity by customer page views. A top spot in one of those lists means something different from a win in another.
| Source | What its selection represents |
|---|---|
| The Game Awards | Winners in award categories at the event. |
| GameSpot | Editorial and staff judgments, including a top pick and year-end lists. |
| AFI | A selected group of films or television programs, not a ranked contest with one winner. |
| IMDb | Popularity rankings based on customer page views, not critics’ reviews or a small survey. |
Best games of 2022
The Game Awards’ winner: Elden Ring
Elden Ring won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022. The event also named it Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Role Playing. These are awards from that event, not proof of a universal critics’ consensus. The Game Awards named God of War Ragnarök Best Narrative, Stray Best Debut Indie, and Arcane Best Adaptation.
GameSpot’s editorial list
GameSpot included Elden Ring among ten top games in its December 2022 staff list, presented alphabetically rather than as a numbered ranking. Its eligibility description covered new games released since near the start of December 2021, as well as games that left early access during that period. GameSpot praised Elden Ring’s open world and exploration; its discussion of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope highlighted movement in tactical combat.

A different publication’s pick
TIME called God of War: Ragnarok its best game of 2022 and described it as available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The differing picks illustrate why a “best game” claim should identify the publication or award behind it.
Best movies of 2022
| Source and method | Selection |
|---|---|
| GameSpot editorial pick | Everything Everywhere All at Once was GameSpot’s top movie. Its top-ten list also discussed The Batman, Nope, X, Turning Red, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. |
| IMDb popularity ranking, announced December 12, 2022 | The Batman ranked first by IMDb page views among movies released in the U.S. in 2022; Everything Everywhere All at Once ranked eighth. |
| AFI 2022 selections | The selected films included Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, Nope, She Said, Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, The Woman King, and Women Talking. AFI gave The Banshees of Inisherin a Special Award. |
Those results answer different questions: GameSpot’s staff chose a favorite, IMDb measured audience page-view popularity within a stated U.S. release-year scope, and AFI published a selection rather than a ranked top ten.

|---|---|
| GameSpot editorial pick | Severance was GameSpot’s TV show of the year. Its separate ten-show list included Andor, The Rehearsal, The Boys, Better Call Saul, and Our Flag Means Death. GameSpot described Severance as an Apple TV+ workplace drama. |
| IMDb popularity ranking | Stranger Things ranked first among TV and streaming series that released new episodes in 2022. House of the Dragon was second, Better Call Saul third, and The Sandman eighth. |
| AFI 2022 selections | The selected programs included Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Better Call Saul, Hacks, Mo, Pachinko, Reservation Dogs, Severance, Somebody Somewhere, and The White Lotus. |
IMDb says its rankings draw on weekly IMDbPro rankings based on customer page views. Its December 2022 announcement said they reflected page views from “more than 200 million monthly visitors”—IMDb’s own description of its audience, not an independent audit. IMDb chief operating officer Nikki Santoro said: “It is exciting to see Stranger Things earn the coveted #1 spot on our list of the most popular series of 2022 as determined by IMDb customer page views after consistently landing top spots our annual lists, with previous rankings at #2 in 2016, #5 in 2017, and #3 in 2019.” That is a statement about popularity on IMDb, not a critical verdict.

The referenced IGN year-end package covered comics as well as games, films, television, and anime. Its categories included Best Comic Book; a separate category was titled “The Best Comic Book Series or Original Graphic Novel of 2022,” alongside a Best Comic Book TV Series category. The accessible material does not establish the named comics nominees or winners, so there is no reliable basis here to name a best comic or graphic novel.

When comparing comics picks, distinguish an ongoing series from a self-contained graphic novel, and a single issue from a collected edition. An adaptation category is not the same thing as a comics recommendation. Confirm the exact edition and current availability before choosing a copy.
