For a 24/7 product demonstration on YouTube Live, start with OBS set to H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC audio. Choose a resolution and frame rate that keep the product legible and that your measured upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p30; these are platform recommendations, not guarantees that your connection can hold those rates.
OBS can send the stream, but settings alone cannot keep it running through a power failure, computer crash, ISP outage, or YouTube interruption. The guide below covers the OBS setup and the operating limits to plan for.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
These are baseline settings for a standard dynamic-range (SDR) product demonstration. The right resolution and frame rate depend on what viewers need to read and how much motion the demo contains. A close-up of a label, a screen capture, or quick product handling may need different settings from a mostly static display.
| OBS setting | Starting recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Service and server | Select YouTube Live in OBS and use the server and stream key provided by YouTube. Choose RTMPS if the available YouTube/OBS setup offers it. | YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for standard streaming. |
| Video encoder | H.264 | It is a straightforward baseline for an SDR stream. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingest support, but use those only after confirming compatibility with your OBS encoder and YouTube stream-key configuration. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) | A steady bitrate is the recommended ingest approach. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio encoder | AAC | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo audio, its guidance specifies 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit for SDR | HDR uses a separate workflow and requires supported hardware and HEVC, along with specific color and protocol configuration. |
| Latency | Normal latency unless real-time audience interaction is important | YouTube notes that lower latency can cause more playback buffering; it is less important when the creator is not interacting with viewers. |
YouTube may update its recommendations and OBS labels can vary by version or encoder. Check the current YouTube Live Control Room guidance when setting up a new stream, especially if you change codecs or use HDR.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
Start with the output that makes the product, label, or on-screen detail readable. Then select the bitrate recommendation for that exact resolution and frame rate. The following figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations and corresponding minimums; they are not measured results or a promise of stable delivery on a particular network.
| Output | Recommended H.264 video bitrate | Minimum H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These four rows are examples, not the whole bitrate table. For other combinations, use YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating from these numbers. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps, but a higher frame rate is not automatically better for a mostly static demonstration. More motion can benefit from it; a static display may not.
Set the output in OBS
- Open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution and frame rate you have chosen. Check that the product remains readable in the preview and that the scene is composed for the output size.
- Open Settings > Output and select Advanced output mode if needed to expose encoder controls. Under the streaming encoder settings, choose an H.264 encoder available on your system, set rate control to CBR, enter the matching video bitrate, and set the keyframe interval to 2 s.
- Open Settings > Audio and configure stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz where those controls are available. Listen to a test: speech should be clear and handling noise should not overpower it.
- Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube, and connect the account or enter the stream key copied from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a recording or share it publicly.
OBS and YouTube may expose some controls in different places depending on version, encoder, and account setup. Verify the actual outgoing settings in OBS and the incoming stream in YouTube’s preview before relying on a long run.

Match the stream to your upload connection
Use measured upload capacity, not download speed, to decide whether a bitrate is viable. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That margin matters especially on a shared office or home connection, where other devices and services compete with OBS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Measure upload speed on the same network and at a time representative of the planned stream.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate that show the product clearly, then use the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation as a starting target.
- Leave at least the recommended 20% upload headroom and account for other network use. A headline ISP speed is not necessarily the bandwidth OBS can use continuously.
- Test with the actual camera or capture source, lighting, overlays, audio, and representative motion. Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages.
- If OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health degrades, reduce the output demand or address the network bottleneck before trying a higher-quality setting.
OBS documents dynamic bitrate as a beta option that can lower bitrate during network congestion. It may help avoid some connection-related interruptions, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying network problem; the reduced bitrate also lowers image quality. YouTube’s transcoding creates multiple playback formats for viewers, but it does not compensate for an unstable feed arriving at YouTube.
Choose an encoder your computer can sustain
OBS explains that hardware encoding shifts work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Modern hardware encoders can provide good quality with relatively little performance impact, while earlier generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. There is no universally best encoder or GPU for every OBS scene.

- Use an encoder actually available in your installed OBS setup.
- Compare the stream under the real scene load, not just with an empty preview. Browser sources, capture sources, filters, and overlays all form part of the workload.
- Watch for encoding lag and dropped frames during the test. If the system cannot encode reliably, simplify the scene or lower the output demand before committing to continuous operation.
Test the demonstration before leaving it live
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” A still test card will not reveal whether a moving hand blurs, a label becomes unreadable, or handling sounds overwhelm speech.
- Prepare the OBS scene and verify that the product demonstration is framed correctly at the selected output resolution.
- Start a test stream and inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check product detail, motion, audio, overlays, and stream-health messages.
- Verify that the stream is visible to viewers using the intended visibility setting and that the playback looks and sounds right outside the OBS preview.
- For a scheduled event or a setup with a backup encoder, set up in advance and test the backup failover rather than assuming it will work.
- Only after those checks, begin the planned continuous run. A successful preflight reduces setup risk but cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.
What OBS settings cannot guarantee for a 24/7 stream
Bitrate, keyframes, and encoder choice govern the feed OBS sends; they are not an unattended recovery plan. A computer can shut down, OBS or the operating system can fail, power can be lost, an ISP can drop, or YouTube ingest can interrupt. Recovery from those events requires operational planning beyond the settings above.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Decide who or what will detect a stopped or unhealthy stream.
- Plan how to restart the encoder and restore the intended scene after an application or operating-system failure.
- Consider power and network resilience appropriate to the importance of the channel.
- Test any monitoring, backup encoder, failover, and recovery procedure under realistic conditions.
Check rights and YouTube channel policies
A product demonstration should use video, music, images, and other material that you own or are authorized to stream. A live feed is not exempt from copyright rules. Keep documentation for licensed material, and avoid background music or third-party footage unless the permission covers streaming and the intended use.

Whether a channel or video qualifies for monetization is a separate YouTube policy decision. Repeating material does not itself establish eligibility, and these OBS settings cannot make content original or policy-compliant. Make the demonstration useful in its own right, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before building a channel around repeated or prerecorded material.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube accept 60 fps for a live stream?
Yes. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps; choose it when the motion in the demonstration benefits from it and your upload and encoder can sustain the matching output.
Can OBS settings alone make a stream stay live around the clock?
No. They configure the outgoing feed, but uninterrupted operation also depends on power, network, software recovery, monitoring, and YouTube ingest.
Should I use lower latency for a prerecorded demonstration?
Usually not if viewers do not need to interact in real time. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering.
