Start with OBS’s built-in sources and controls; you may not need a plugin. Use Media Source for one local video, VLC Video for a playlist, and OBS launch parameters, WebSocket clients, or scripts only when you need additional control over starting or changing OBS. Schedule the YouTube event separately in YouTube Studio: OBS-side automation does not set every event option.
Choose the playback method first
“Automating a pre-recorded stream” can mean three separate jobs: playing the video, controlling OBS, and creating or scheduling the YouTube Live event. Match the tool to the job rather than installing a plugin by default.
| Need | OBS option | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Play one local recording | Media Source | Plays a single video file, with looping and end-of-playback behavior in its properties. |
| Play several files in sequence or as a playlist | VLC Video source | Creates a playlist and offers loop and shuffle options; requires VLC. |
| Start OBS streaming from a launch routine | Launch parameters | Can start streaming when OBS launches, including through an external scheduled task. |
| Control scenes or sources externally | OBS WebSocket | Lets compatible external tools automate or control OBS. Built into OBS Studio 28 and later. |
| Implement custom behavior | OBS scripting | Python or Lua scripts can support custom logic; setup depends on what the script needs to do. |
| Create and schedule the YouTube event | YouTube Studio Live Control Room | Creates the event and provides the YouTube-side stream setup; OBS connects as the encoder. |
Play one video or a playlist
One local video: Media Source
Add an OBS Media Source and select the recording. OBS documents support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; supported audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. In the source properties, enable Loop if the video should repeat. Set what the source should display when playback ends: selecting “Show nothing when playback ends” hides it once playback finishes, so consider that setting if the scheduled event is expected to continue showing content.
For a one-time playback, make sure the intended end behavior matches the YouTube event duration. A source ending does not itself create or schedule a YouTube event.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Several files: VLC Video
Use OBS’s VLC Video source when the stream should move through multiple local files. Add the files to its playlist, then choose whether to loop or shuffle. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. VLC Video is the native playlist option described by OBS, not a requirement for a single-file stream.
Before scheduling, preview the playlist in OBS and confirm its order, audio, and loop or shuffle behavior. Shuffle is unsuitable if the sequence itself matters.

Choose how OBS should be controlled
Launch parameters for scheduled startup
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. It can be used by an external scheduled task or launch routine to open OBS and begin streaming. OBS launch parameters can also select a scene, profile, or scene collection. If configuring a scheduled task, OBS’s guide says to set its working directory to the folder containing the OBS executable.
This approach addresses startup; it does not replace creating the YouTube event or checking that OBS is connected to the intended stream setup.

WebSocket clients for external controls
OBS WebSocket is included by default in OBS Studio 28 and later. It exposes scene and source control to compatible external tools, which can help when you need a button, macro, or other external trigger rather than a launch-time action. OBS lists clients including Macro Deck, Touch Portal, Streamer.bot, Deckboard, OBS Blade, Aitum, Kruiz Control, and the Bitfocus Companion Module. That compatibility list is not a ranking, and the official documentation does not establish one best client for automating pre-recorded YouTube Live.
WebSocket allows remote control, so protect it with authentication and a password. Do not expose an unauthenticated control endpoint to a network. Choose a client based on the specific action you need and its current compatibility with your OBS setup.

Scripts for custom logic
OBS supports Python and Lua scripting. A script may suit a workflow that needs custom conditions or behavior beyond startup and ordinary scene/source controls. It generally involves more configuration than using a built-in source or launch parameter; use it only when you can define the behavior you need and maintain the script.

Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then connect OBS as the encoder using the event’s stream setup. Starting OBS and scheduling a YouTube event are separate actions: an OBS plugin or control method does not automatically configure every YouTube event setting.

For unattended operation, open the specific scheduled event in the current YouTube Studio interface and verify its start and stop behavior. YouTube’s encoder guide covers scheduling and connecting an encoder. OBS’s YouTube community guide discusses the event’s Auto-start and Auto-stop controls, but it is older guidance; confirm the current labels and settings in Studio before relying on them.
Preflight before relying on automation
- Playback: Confirm the selected file or VLC playlist, sequence, audio, and intended loop or end behavior.
- OBS control: Test the launch routine, client, or script with the intended scene and source before the scheduled event.
- YouTube event: Check that the scheduled event is the intended one and that OBS is connecting through its stream setup.
- Start and stop: Verify the event’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings in the current Studio interface.
- Security: If using WebSocket, enable authentication and use a password.
- Rights and channel policies: Use recordings you have the right to stream and review YouTube’s copyright and channel rules. Using prerecorded footage does not by itself establish permission or eligibility.
These checks reduce setup mistakes, but the cited documentation does not establish guaranteed unattended reliability.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube stream without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to the OBS setup: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
