For several devotional video files, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source: add the files in the order you want and leave Loop Playlist enabled. For one video, OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler; turn on Loop. You also need to send the OBS scene to YouTube through an encoder stream in YouTube Studio—the looping source alone does not start a live broadcast.
Choose the right OBS source
| Your setup | OBS source | What to set | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local devotional video | Media Source | Enable Loop. | Simple, but intended for a single file rather than a multi-file playlist. |
| Several local videos played in sequence | VLC Video | Add the files to the playlist and keep Loop Playlist enabled. It is on by default. | Requires VLC installed with architecture matching OBS. |
| You need to edit a playlist without restarting playback or preserve current-file state across OBS restarts | Optional Media Playlist Source plugin | Check the plugin’s listing and compatibility with your installed OBS build before installing. | Third-party dependency; unnecessary for a basic repeating playlist. |
OBS documents these source options in its Media Sources guide. The optional plugin is listed at OBS Project Forums.
Set up a repeating devotional playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. VLC Video is available when VLC is installed. Match the architecture: OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS Sources dock, select +, choose VLC Video, create or select the source, and add your local video files in playback order. OBS’s exact dialog presentation can vary by release.
- Check looping. Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback returns to the first file after the last. Shuffle is also available if you want a different order each cycle.
- Fit the picture to your scene. Add the source to the scene, then size and position it to suit the canvas. In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list render above sources below them. Put a title, lyrics, or logo above the video only if you want it to appear over the footage. The OBS Sources Guide explains source order and scene composition.
- Check every file and transition. Preview the scene and confirm the playlist advances, loops, and displays as intended before starting the broadcast. Include representative audio in your check; a picture playing does not confirm that the audio is routed as intended.
For a single video instead
Add a Media Source to the scene, select the local file, and enable Loop in its properties. This repeats that file; use VLC Video when you need several files in sequence.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s platform-wide guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. Check your channel’s status in YouTube Studio; eligibility or restrictions can be channel-specific. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Follow the current Studio prompts for the event’s visibility and other settings. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream configuration.
- Copy the connection details into OBS. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the YouTube encoder setup into OBS’s stream configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Set and test the encoder output. YouTube lists CBR, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe frequency (no more than four seconds) among its encoder settings; it recommends RTMPS. Choose the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together, based on your video and actual outbound connection. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance gives recommendations by output format. Do not select a bitrate simply because a high number is available: the connection needs enough sustained upload capacity.
- Start early and inspect stream health. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, encoder setup at least two hours before the stream, and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Start OBS, inspect the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators, and make the event public when ready. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of a stable connection. See YouTube live-streaming tips.
- End and archive deliberately. YouTube’s encoder instructions say stopping the encoder ends the stream. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but check archive and privacy settings for the specific event in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Protect devotional recordings and channel eligibility
Copyright applies to devotional material too
A devotional subject does not make a recording free to rebroadcast. Make sure you have the necessary rights for the video, sound recording, composition, performance, and any other material in the stream. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can lead to a replaced picture, warning, interruption, or termination. Even when you have a licence, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Looping does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. Generic or repetitive material may be treated as inauthentic content; the substance of each video should be materially varied and provide creative, educational, or other value. Whether a particular devotional channel qualifies depends on its content and channel review—being live for a long time is not itself a promise of monetization. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
India-specific limits
The OBS playlist workflow described here has no India-specific variation in the cited OBS and YouTube documentation. YouTube’s stated eligibility guidance is platform-wide, but you must still check restrictions on your own channel. The applicable local licensing or registration requirements depend on the content and circumstances; the sources linked here do not establish legal requirements for a particular stream in India.

Troubleshoot common playlist and live-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the source menu | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source menu again. |
| The playlist stops after the last video | Playlist looping is disabled. | Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Only one file repeats, or files do not play in the desired sequence | The wrong source or playlist order is being used. | Use Media Source with Loop for one file; use VLC Video and review the order for multiple files. |
| Lyrics or a logo are hidden behind the video | The overlay source is below the video in OBS’s source order. | Move the overlay above the video in the Sources list if it should render on top. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS output | The encoder stream is not configured or the URL/key is incorrect. | Compare OBS’s stream configuration with the current URL and key in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private. |
| Preview or stream health shows instability | Output settings may exceed the available sustained upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. | Use YouTube’s resolution-specific encoder guidance, leave the recommended upload headroom, and test with representative motion and audio before the event. |
| The live stream is interrupted after starting | A third-party content match or another live-stream restriction may apply. | Check YouTube Studio alerts and the relevant rights or eligibility status; licensed content may still require Content ID allowlisting. |
