For a stable YouTube Live stream using H.264 in OBS, start with CBR, YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Your upload connection must sustain the video bitrate plus audio and other network traffic; test the actual setup before going live and monitor YouTube’s stream health while broadcasting.
Recommended OBS bitrate settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations vary by video codec, resolution, and frame rate. The table below is for sending a live stream to YouTube—not for encoding a prerecorded video file for upload. Values are Mbps. Source: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”, current guidance accessed October 3, 2026.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1 / H.265 minimum | AV1 / H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
For the common H.264 setup, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60. A recommended figure is a platform reference, not a guarantee that your ISP connection, Wi-Fi, or computer can sustain it reliably.
Which bitrate should you choose?
Match the target to the content
Choose the resolution and frame rate your stream actually needs, then use the corresponding codec row. Fast movement can benefit from a higher frame rate, but it also changes the bitrate recommendation. For a documentary, lecture, or mostly static scene, 1080p30 may be a sensible target if 1080p60 is not needed or your connection cannot reliably sustain the higher recommended bitrate.

Match the target to reliable upload capacity
Check upload speed and consider other traffic using the connection. The available upload capacity needs to support the stream continuously; a speed-test result is not proof that the connection will remain stable throughout an event. YouTube does not publish a universal upload-headroom percentage in this guidance. If capacity fluctuates, reduce the bitrate or output resolution/frame rate and test again rather than treating the recommended maximum as mandatory.
OBS encoder settings that matter
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), YouTube’s listed recommendation.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codec and transport: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, delivered using RTMP or RTMPS. For a straightforward compatibility-oriented setup, H.264 over RTMPS is a reasonable starting point; YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3, with 44.1 kHz stereo sampling and 128 Kbps for stereo. Its listed 5.1 surround recommendation is 384 Kbps.
- Video format: YouTube lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC entropy coding, and Rec. 709 for SDR.
OBS menu names and available encoder controls can differ by OBS version and by whether you use a hardware or software encoder, so set the equivalent controls offered by your selected encoder rather than assuming every interface has identical labels. OBS Project notes that YouTube transcodes streams into multiple output formats and that a consistent keyframe interval can help automatic quality-option transitions happen without interruption. YouTube’s current 2-second recommendation is the setting to follow. See the OBS Project streaming documentation.

Set up and test the stream before the event
- Choose resolution and frame rate. Pick a target suited to the content and available upload connection, then consult the table for the selected codec.
- Check upload speed. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and choosing a reliable quality for the connection. Check for competing uploads, cloud backups, or other traffic during the intended broadcast window.
- Configure OBS. Select CBR, enter the chosen bitrate, set a 2-second keyframe interval, and configure audio and video format options supported by your encoder.
- Connect to YouTube. Use the stream key and ingest settings shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default; its help page says manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key and manual settings.
- Run a representative test. YouTube advises testing before going live, including audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A static desktop test alone may not reveal issues that appear during motion or with the actual audio setup.
- Adjust and retest if needed. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate or output quality, then repeat the test. Change one major setting at a time where practical so you can tell what helped.
- Monitor while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator and any messages in Live Control Room during the broadcast.
Latency is separate from bitrate
Latency affects how quickly viewers see the stream, not which bitrate row applies. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. Its guidance says 4K/2160p has no low-latency option and runs at normal latency. If near-real-time interaction is important, weigh the viewer delay against the risk of more buffering; the bitrate still needs to fit the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec.
For further detail on stream settings and latency, see YouTube Help: Manage your stream settings.

Troubleshooting unstable YouTube streams
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream buffers | Upload connection may not reliably sustain the selected bitrate, or competing traffic may be using bandwidth. | Check upload speed and network use. Reduce bitrate or choose a lower resolution/frame rate, then run another representative test. |
| Frames drop in OBS | The issue may be network delivery or the computer’s ability to encode; the symptom alone does not identify which. | Check OBS and YouTube status messages, reduce output demands, and test again. Avoid assuming that changing bitrate alone will fix an encoder-load problem. |
| Quality options do not transition smoothly | Keyframe cadence may be inconsistent or longer than recommended. | Use a consistent 2-second keyframe interval, within YouTube’s limit of no more than 4 seconds. |
| Audio sounds wrong or is missing | Audio source, selected codec, sample rate, or channel configuration may not match the intended output. | Check the active OBS audio source and output settings; YouTube lists AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. |
| Manual resolution controls are unavailable | YouTube’s automatic encoder-setting detection is enabled for the stream setup. | YouTube says manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key and manual settings. Check the current Live Control Room options before changing the key. |
