That distinction matters: appearing in an April release calendar does not necessarily mean a film was included with a Prime membership.
This selection focuses on films with lasting critical reputations, strong performances, cultural influence, documentary value, or clear appeal to viewers who enjoy fact-based storytelling. It is a U.S. catalog snapshot for April 2026, not a permanent ranking of everything on Prime Video.
Best movies on Prime Video in April 2026
“Best” here means more than “popular.” The choices below were selected for critical standing, filmmaking achievement, performances, influence, rewatchability, and relevance to documentary-minded viewers. Prime Video’s Popular movies row is a popularity feature, not an objective quality ranking.
| Movie | Year | Director | Why watch it | April 2026 status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jerry West: The Logo | 2026 | Not specified in the supplied April listing | A natural choice for documentary viewers: a profile of the basketball player and executive whose silhouette became one of sport’s most recognizable symbols. | Listed for April 16. Confirm the offer on the U.S. Prime Video detail page. |
| Thief | 1981 | Michael Mann | A precise, nocturnal crime film about a professional safecracker trying to build a life outside the criminal world. Its craft, electronic score, and working-class detail remain exceptional. | Listed for April 1. Confirm whether it is included, rentable, or purchasable. |
| American Fiction | 2023 | Cord Jefferson | Jeffrey Wright leads a sharp satire about publishing, race, identity, and the pressure to perform a marketable version of Black experience. It balances comedy with uncomfortable observations about cultural institutions. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| The Menu | 2022 | Mark Mylod | A darkly funny thriller that turns fine dining into a study of class, entitlement, labor, and artistic obsession. The controlled setting makes every social detail feel like evidence. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Being John Malkovich | 1999 | Spike Jonze | Charlie Kaufman’s inventive screenplay turns celebrity, desire, and identity into an absurdist fantasy. It is strange without being empty, with memorable work from John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, and John Malkovich. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Fast Times at Ridgemont High | 1982 | Amy Heckerling | A coming-of-age ensemble film that is more observant than its broad reputation suggests. Its overlapping stories capture teenage uncertainty, social performance, sex, work, and independence. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| The Terminator | 1984 | James Cameron | A lean science-fiction chase movie that also works as a warning about militarized technology and systems humans cannot control. Its practical effects and relentless structure still hold up. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Thelma & Louise | 1991 | Ridley Scott | Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon anchor a road movie about friendship, autonomy, violence, and the limited choices available to women. Its final image remains one of American cinema’s most discussed endings. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| American Fiction | 2023 | Cord Jefferson | Its mock-literary premise is only the surface. The film becomes a family drama about grief, responsibility, and the gap between private life and public identity. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Ford v Ferrari | 2019 | James Mangold | This engineering and racing drama makes technical problem-solving cinematic while grounding the spectacle in the friendship between Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| The Aviator | 2004 | Martin Scorsese | A richly staged account of Howard Hughes’s aviation ambitions, business battles, and deteriorating mental health. It is especially strong on the relationship between technological risk and personal obsession. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Operation Finale | 2018 | Chris Weitz | A historical thriller dramatizing the Israeli operation to capture Adolf Eichmann in Argentina. It is worth watching alongside documentary accounts, particularly for discussion of dramatization and historical compression. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Dances with Wolves | 1990 | Kevin Costner | An expansive frontier epic about cultural encounter and displacement. Its historical framing is contested and should not be treated as a documentary account, but it remains an important film for discussing how Hollywood constructs the American past. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| House of Gucci | 2021 | Ridley Scott | A heightened dramatization of the Gucci family’s internal conflict and Maurizio Gucci’s murder. The performances are deliberately extravagant, making it an entertaining companion to factual investigations of the case. | Listed for April 1. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning | 2025 | Christopher McQuarrie | For viewers looking for a major recent release, this entry continues the series’ emphasis on practical stunts, global espionage, and impossible logistical problems solved under pressure. | Listed for April 3. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| The Zone of Interest | 2023 | Jonathan Glazer | A formally rigorous Holocaust drama that keeps the machinery of atrocity largely outside the frame. Its sound design and domestic point of view make it particularly valuable for conversations about what images reveal, conceal, and normalize. | Listed for April 12. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Sarah’s Oil | 2025 | Not specified in the supplied April listing | A recent historical drama based on Sarah Rector, the Oklahoma girl whose oil rights made her one of the wealthiest Black children in early twentieth-century America. | Listed for April 15. Confirm the current offer on Prime Video. |
| Balls Up | 2026 | Not specified in the supplied April listing | An Amazon-listed original release for viewers wanting a new contemporary movie rather than a catalog classic. | Officially listed by Amazon for April 15. Confirm whether playback is included with Prime. |
| Vengeance | 2026 | Not specified in the supplied April listing | An Amazon-listed original release scheduled for April 17 and one of the month’s principal new film arrivals. | Officially listed by Amazon for April 17. Confirm whether playback is included with Prime. |
Best choices for documentary viewers
If you are choosing from this list because you prefer documentaries, start with Jerry West: The Logo. It is the clearest nonfiction selection in the April movie schedule. The film’s subject connects sport, celebrity, branding, business, and the way an individual’s image can outlive the person behind it.

For dramatized history, choose Operation Finale, The Aviator, House of Gucci, or Sarah’s Oil. These are not substitutes for documentaries or archival research. Their value is in showing how filmmakers shape real events through compressed timelines, composite scenes, heightened dialogue, and a central protagonist.
The Zone of Interest is the strongest formal recommendation. It is fiction, but its method invites the kind of close analysis often applied to nonfiction: whose perspective controls the story, what remains off-screen, and how sound supplies information that the image withholds.
How to check whether a movie is included with Prime
- Open the U.S. Prime Video website or app.
- Select Movies. On the web interface, the broader movie page is labeled All movies.
- Search for the exact title, including its release year if multiple versions appear.
- Open the movie’s detail page rather than relying on a search-result thumbnail.
- Check the playback control and price. Look for Included with Prime, a direct Watch now option, Rent, Buy, or a request to start an Add-on subscription.
- Record the date you checked. A listing can change because rights vary by location and licensing window.
Amazon separates Included with Prime, Movies and TV shows to buy or rent, and Add-on subscriptions. A third-party service such as JustWatch can help locate a title, but it also separates subscription streaming from Amazon’s transactional store, so use the Prime Video detail page for the final check.

What changed in April 2026
The April schedule included a substantial wave of catalog movies on April 1, including Thief, American Fiction, The Menu, Being John Malkovich, The Terminator, Thelma & Louise, Ford v Ferrari, Operation Finale, The Aviator, and House of Gucci. Later dates added Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, The Zone of Interest, Sarah’s Oil, Balls Up, and Vengeance.
Some published schedules contained duplicate entries for Child’s Play, Red Dawn, and The Amityville Horror. Those duplicates should not be counted as separate movies unless Prime Video displays distinct versions. The same April listings also classify The House of the Spirits inconsistently; Amazon describes it as an eight-episode series, so it is not included in this movie list.
FAQ
Are all of these movies included with a Prime membership?

The Bottom Line
The strongest April 2026 choices are Thief, American Fiction, The Menu, Being John Malkovich, The Terminator, Thelma & Louise, and The Zone of Interest, with Jerry West: The Logo the clearest documentary pick.
