Best Motorcycle Routes and Scenic Stops Around Los Alamos and Northern New Mexico

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first ride from Los Alamos, choose the Jemez Mountain Trail. It gives you volcanic cliffs, forest, high meadows, hot springs and several worthwhile short stops without committing to a long-distance day. For a full cultural traverse, ride the 105-mile High Road to Taos. For the region’s most alpine loop, take the Enchanted Circle. The Turquoise Trail is the best southern extension when Santa Fe or Albuquerque is already part of your trip.

These roads cross high, remote and sometimes separately managed lands. Route access, weather and services can change quickly, so verify conditions immediately before departure and treat every stop as a plan rather than a guarantee.

At a glance: which northern New Mexico ride fits your day?

Route Best for Format Main scenery Planning note
Jemez Mountain Trail A local full-day ride from Los Alamos Loop or extended loop Volcanic cliffs, forest, caldera, meadows and hot springs Access is spread across federal, state and Pueblo-managed areas; confirm each stop before riding
High Road to Taos A scenic cultural traverse Point-to-point High villages, Carson National Forest and adobe churches Officially 105 miles; allow 4–7 hours with sightseeing stops
Enchanted Circle Alpine riding and a complete loop Loop Wheeler Peak country, Moreno Valley, Red River and high passes Elevation and weather can change rapidly
Turquoise Trail A southern extension from Santa Fe or Albuquerque Point-to-point, with a Sandia spur Mining towns, high desert and Sandia Crest Works best as part of a larger Santa Fe–Albuquerque itinerary

The routes are not interchangeable. Jemez is the most practical choice when Los Alamos is your base; High Road to Taos emphasizes villages and history; Enchanted Circle emphasizes alpine terrain; and Turquoise Trail adds a lower-elevation, historic-road segment to a southern trip.

Jemez Mountain Trail: the best ride from Los Alamos

The Jemez Mountain Trail is the anchor ride for a Los Alamos motorcycle trip. Its official byway route passes through Jemez Pueblo and Jemez Springs, crosses Santa Fe National Forest and Valles Caldera, reaches Los Alamos and Fenton Lake, and includes access to side trips such as Soda Dam, Spence Hot Springs, Gilman Tunnels and Bandelier National Monument. The exact distance depends on which side roads and return leg you select, so plan it as a mapped loop rather than relying on a single mileage figure.

A practical route spine

  1. Start in Los Alamos. Top off fuel, download an offline map and check the latest NMRoads report before leaving town.
  2. Take NM 4 through the Jemez Mountains and Valles Caldera. The road links forested sections with broad volcanic meadows and open views.
  3. Continue toward Jemez Springs and the Jemez Pueblo area. This is the route’s most convenient cluster of canyon scenery, food or rest opportunities and short natural stops.
  4. Choose your return. You can turn back toward Los Alamos for a manageable day, continue east toward Santa Fe, or add a side trip such as Fenton Lake or Bandelier when time and access allow.

Valles Caldera National Preserve

Valles Caldera is the visual centerpiece of the northern section. The preserve’s broad volcanic mountain meadows contrast with the tighter canyon roads elsewhere on NM 4, and the open terrain can make wildlife easier to spot. Pull completely off the travel lane at designated areas, keep a safe distance from animals and allow extra time for changing light and weather across the exposed caldera.

Jemez Springs, Soda Dam and Spence Hot Springs

Jemez Springs makes a useful mid-ride pause in a canyon setting. The byway description highlights nearby Soda Dam and Spence Hot Springs, allowing you to combine a short geological stop with a longer break. Soda Dam is a distinctive mineral formation created by flowing water; it is a quick look rather than a reason to rush the rest of the ride. Spence Hot Springs requires attention to access conditions and local rules, and facilities should not be assumed.

Fenton Lake State Park

Fenton Lake is an alpine-lake option on the byway. It changes the character of the day from volcanic canyon riding to a cooler, forested lakeside stop. Check the park’s current opening status, fees and parking arrangements before detouring; seasonal conditions can affect access even when the main highway is open.

Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier is the major archaeological side trip. The monument protects nearly 33,000 acres of canyons, mesas and wilderness, with ancestral Pueblo dwellings built into canyon and mesa terrain. A motorcycle is useful for reaching the area, but the key experiences require walking, stairs and time away from the bike. Verify shuttle, reservation and operating requirements with the monument before setting out, especially during busy seasons.

Gilman Tunnels and the broader byway

Gilman Tunnels is a short side trip identified by the official byway page. The wider Jemez route also references San Pedro Parks Wilderness and Cabezon Peak, so riders can build a longer day around geology and forest scenery. These additions may involve roads or facilities managed by different agencies. Confirm surface conditions, closures and whether a segment is suitable for your motorcycle before committing.

Why this route works as a motorcycle day ride

Jemez combines twisty mountain terrain, volcanic geology, forest, high meadows and several kinds of stops in one area. You can make it a compact out-and-back, a full loop or an extended ride toward Santa Fe. That flexibility is its main advantage over the longer Taos routes. It is also the route where access rules vary most visibly between national-forest, state-park, national-monument and Pueblo areas, so a stop-by-stop plan matters.

High Road to Taos: the scenic cultural traverse

The High Road to Taos is the strongest choice when the ride itself should connect mountain villages, historic settlements and adobe architecture. The official alignment runs from the Taos area on NM 68 through Ranchos de Taos, then along NM 518, NM 75 and NM 76 through Peñasco, Trampas, Truchas and Cordova before reaching Chimayó and connections toward Santa Fe.

The route is officially 105 miles (170 km). The stated driving time is 2.5 hours without stops, but a realistic sightseeing day is 4–7 hours. The longer estimate accounts for photography, meals, church and village visits, traffic, weather pauses and the slower pace appropriate for a winding high-country road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ranchos de Taos

Ranchos de Taos is the first major stop when traveling south from Taos. San Francisco de Asís Church and the surrounding adobe architecture provide a concentrated introduction to the route’s Spanish-colonial character. Park where permitted and walk rather than trying to view the church from the roadway. Local streets are community spaces, not motorcycle overlooks.

Peñasco and Carson National Forest

Peñasco marks the transition into a more remote, forested portion of the route. Carson National Forest scenery supplies the long views and mountain backdrop, while the village itself offers a natural break before the next sequence of high-country settlements. Services are not continuous, so start with enough fuel and water for the distance between dependable stops.

Trampas, Truchas and Cordova

Trampas, Truchas and Cordova are the heart of the cultural traverse. Their historic Spanish-colonial settlements, adobe buildings and high-country views reward a slower pace. Each village is small; avoid blocking lanes, residential driveways or church access while taking photographs. The appeal is the continuity of the landscape and architecture, not a single roadside attraction.

Chimayó

Chimayó is a useful southern break for food, local culture and route planning. It is also a sensible point to reassess weather and daylight before continuing toward Santa Fe. If you are riding north from Santa Fe, use Chimayó as the first substantial stop and reverse the sequence.

How to plan the day

  1. Choose your direction. Taos to Santa Fe gives you the official route in the direction commonly described by tourism sources; Santa Fe to Taos works equally well if your lodging is in the capital.
  2. Reserve the middle of the day for villages. The route’s value comes from stopping, not from minimizing elapsed riding time.
  3. Fuel before the remote sections. Do not assume every settlement has an open station or card service.
  4. Leave a weather margin. High-country storms, cold and reduced visibility can turn a nominal 2.5-hour drive into a full-day ride.

Enchanted Circle: the alpine loop around Wheeler Peak country

The Enchanted Circle is the region’s best complete alpine loop. From Taos, follow NM 522 north through Arroyo Hondo and Questa, take NM 38 east through Red River, continue to Eagle Nest, then return toward Taos on US 64. Recreation information describes wildflowers, clear lakes, evergreen forest and Wheeler Peak scenery, while the state tourism route emphasizes the high passes and communities around the loop.

Questa and the northern approach

Questa is the gateway to recreation areas including Cabresto Lake and Mallette Canyon. These are worthwhile additions when you want a walk, a picnic or a quieter view than the main highway provides. Confirm whether the side road is paved, open and appropriate for your motorcycle; the scenic loop itself does not guarantee that every recreation spur is equally easy.

Red River

Red River began as a mining community and now provides one of the loop’s most convenient service stops. Alpine scenery, fishing opportunities and switchback roads make it a natural place to pause, refuel and check the weather before climbing farther. Summer traffic can be heavier near town, so watch for pedestrians and turning vehicles.

Bobcat Pass and Moreno Valley

Bobcat Pass and Moreno Valley deliver the loop’s broadest high-elevation views. The road’s exposure makes wind, cold and sudden storms more consequential than the temperature in Taos might suggest. Layered clothing, a clear visor and a plan for turning around are practical necessities, not luxuries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eagle Nest and the return to Taos

Eagle Nest sits on the eastern side of the loop and provides another chance to stop before US 64 carries you back toward Taos. Check fuel range before leaving town; distances and services are more widely spaced than on an urban ride.

Rio Grande Gorge Bridge side trip

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is a worthwhile Taos add-on. New Mexico’s tourism information places it 12 miles northwest of Taos on US 64. It can be added before or after the loop, but allow time for parking and walking onto the viewing areas. Strong wind is common on exposed bridges; secure loose gear and keep clear of traffic lanes.

What makes Enchanted Circle different

Unlike the High Road, this is a loop rather than a point-to-point cultural traverse. Unlike Jemez, its identity is primarily alpine: high passes, Wheeler Peak country, evergreen forest, lakes and open mountain valleys. Elevation changes can affect both riders and machines, and weather can vary between the Taos valley, Red River and the pass. Check conditions for the entire circle, not only the town where you start.

Turquoise Trail: the southern extension

The Turquoise Trail is the best add-on when your itinerary already includes Santa Fe or Albuquerque. NM 14 links the two cities through Madrid and Cerrillos, combining high-desert scenery with mining-town history. It is not the most efficient Los Alamos day loop, but it fits naturally before or after a northern New Mexico ride.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Madrid

Madrid is known for galleries, food and a compact main-street stop. It works well as a coffee, lunch or photography break. Expect pedestrians and vehicles entering short side streets; slow down before the town center rather than treating it as an uninterrupted sweep of pavement.

Cerrillos

Cerrillos adds mining-town history and a different visual texture from the forested Jemez or alpine Enchanted Circle. The stop is especially useful for riders who want a historic landscape without committing to a full mountain loop.

NM 536 and Sandia Crest

Recreation information identifies an optional NM 536 spur to Sandia Crest, ending at the crest road. The climb adds elevation and a high overlook to the Turquoise Trail, but it also introduces a separate mountain-road weather and access check. Treat it as an optional branch, not an automatic extension, when daylight or conditions are limited.

How to combine the routes into a multi-day trip

Two-day Los Alamos and Taos plan

  1. Day one: Ride the Jemez Mountain Trail, choosing Valles Caldera, Jemez Springs and one or two side trips rather than trying to visit every stop.
  2. Day two: Use the High Road to Taos as the scenic connection, allowing 4–7 hours for the 105-mile route with stops.

This pairing gives you volcanic scenery first and village-rich high-country riding second.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Taos-focused alpine weekend

  1. Day one: Ride the Enchanted Circle through Questa, Red River, Bobcat Pass, Moreno Valley and Eagle Nest.
  2. Day two: Add the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and ride the High Road in the direction of your next overnight stop.

Keep the two days separate if possible. Combining the full circle with the complete High Road leaves little margin for weather, meals or mechanical delays.

Santa Fe and Albuquerque extension

  1. Start with Jemez from Los Alamos or Santa Fe.
  2. Continue south on the Turquoise Trail through Madrid and Cerrillos.
  3. Add NM 536 to Sandia Crest only after checking access and weather.

This plan links volcanic mountains, historic villages and high-desert mining country without forcing the Turquoise Trail into a short Los Alamos loop.

Before-you-ride checklist

  • Road conditions: Check NMRoads immediately before departure. Its official warning says incidents and weather can change rapidly, that reports may not reflect every incident or road condition, and that coverage is limited to routes maintained by the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
  • Agency access: Confirm opening hours, reservations, fees and access rules for Valles Caldera, Bandelier, Fenton Lake, hot springs, national-forest roads and Pueblo areas with the managing agency or community.
  • Offline navigation: Download maps before leaving service. The New Mexico Department of Transportation scenic-byway map consolidates the Jemez Mountain Trail, High Road to Taos, Turquoise Trail and Enchanted Circle and is useful as a printed or offline planning reference.
  • Fuel and water: Fill up before remote sections and carry water even when the forecast is mild.
  • Weather layers: Pack for cold, wind and rain at elevation; conditions may differ sharply between valleys and passes.
  • Wildlife and livestock: Reduce speed near meadows, forest edges and open range, where animals can enter the roadway with little warning.
  • Emergency margin: Tell someone your route, carry a charged phone and leave daylight for an unplanned turnaround.
  • Respect local communities: Obey posted rules in Pueblo areas, keep noise down in villages and use only designated parking and pullouts.

Common planning mistakes and how to avoid them

Using the posted drive time as the itinerary

The High Road’s 2.5-hour no-stop figure is a travel-time baseline, not a sightseeing schedule. The route’s villages, churches and viewpoints are the reason to ride it, so use the stated 4–7-hour sightseeing range when booking lodging or connecting to another activity.

Assuming a side trip is open because the main highway is open

Bandelier, Fenton Lake, hot springs, forest roads and Pueblo-managed areas can have separate operating rules. Check each destination rather than inferring access from NM 4, NM 38 or US 64 conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Relying on one weather report

A forecast for Los Alamos or Taos does not describe conditions at Valles Caldera, Bobcat Pass or Sandia Crest. Review the route at several elevations and be willing to shorten the ride.

Planning a fuel stop by map distance alone

Small communities may have limited hours or services. Start full, identify confirmed fuel points and carry a payment backup when possible.

Trying to see every attraction

Jemez alone offers enough stops for several variations. Select one primary scenic objective, one cultural or geological stop and one meal or fuel break. A shorter list produces a safer, more enjoyable ride than racing between every pin.

Choosing the best route for your priorities

  • Choose Jemez Mountain Trail when you are based in Los Alamos and want the most varied local day ride.
  • Choose High Road to Taos when historic villages, adobe architecture and a stop-rich point-to-point journey matter most.
  • Choose Enchanted Circle when alpine scenery, high passes and a complete loop are the priority.
  • Choose Turquoise Trail when Santa Fe or Albuquerque is already on your itinerary and you want mining-town history plus an optional Sandia climb.

All four routes reward conservative planning. Their scenery is the result of elevation, exposed terrain, forest and small communities, which also means services are uneven and conditions can change faster than a road map suggests.
