For a first watch, start with AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels vs. Samoa Joe at Unbreakable 2005: it is a standout multi-person X Division match and topped Bleacher Report’s 2009 retrospective list. The other picks below offer different draws—tag-team action, Ultimate X, and major rivalry matches—rather than pretending there is one definitive ranking of TNA’s history.
Five TNA matches worth starting with
These recommendations combine a retrospective ranking, later historical coverage, and reported year-end awards. Those are different kinds of recognition, not scores on a shared scale. Choose by the format or kind of match you want to watch.
1. AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels vs. Samoa Joe — Unbreakable 2005
This is the clearest first choice if you want a showcase for TNA’s X Division style: three wrestlers in a high-level multi-person match. Bleacher Report ranked it No. 1 in its 2009 list of TNA matches, and it also appears in later retrospective coverage. That makes it a well-supported starting point, not an objective verdict on every match in the promotion’s history. Bleacher Report’s 2009 list and Voices of Wrestling’s 2022 retrospective provide different historical perspectives.
2. America’s Most Wanted vs. Triple X — Turning Point 2004
For a change of pace from singles and multi-person X Division action, try this tag-team match featuring Chris Harris and James Storm against Christopher Daniels and Elix Skipper. Bleacher Report placed it No. 2 on the same 2009 list. Its place near the top makes it a useful recommendation for viewers who want team coordination and a different match format. Bleacher Report’s ranking is one publication’s retrospective judgment.

3. AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels vs. LAX — Ultimate X, No Surrender 2006
Choose this one if you specifically want an Ultimate X match. The bout was reported as TNA’s 2006 Match of the Year in a secondary awards summary; Bleacher Report also included it in its 2009 list, at No. 4. The award and the retrospective ranking are separate forms of recognition, rather than interchangeable measures. Bleacher Report’s list and the TNA awards summary record those distinctions.
4. Sting vs. Kurt Angle — Bound for Glory 2007
This major-event rivalry match gives the list a different profile from the X Division and tag-team picks. A secondary summary reports it as TNA’s 2007 Match of the Year. The available record supports identifying it as an award-winning recommendation, but not claiming a universal consensus about the best match of that year. The TNA awards summary lists the result.

The match appears in retrospective and award-related records, including Cagematch’s year-by-year TNA awards database. Bleacher Report’s 2009 list also includes a different Joe–Angle match, from Turning Point 2006; it is a useful next watch if you want more of the rivalry. Cagematch’s TNA awards database and Bleacher Report’s list offer those additional reference points.
