Use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance, test the stream, and monitor its health before leaving it unattended. No official source establishes a universal setting or a guaranteed wattage saving for this workload.
Set Windows to turn off the screen without sleeping
Windows has separate timers for the display and the computer. You want the screen to be allowed to go dark while the PC stays awake to send the broadcast.
- Open Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Choose the plugged-in screen-off timeout that suits your setup.
- Set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the PC does not sleep while OBS is expected to stream.
- Open Settings → System → Power & battery → Power Mode and try Best Power Efficiency. Microsoft says this mode reduces consumption by limiting background activity, but its effect and compatibility depend on the PC. Check that OBS continues to encode and stream normally after changing it.
These Windows controls are described in Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance. Do not confuse a dark display with a sleeping computer: sleep can interrupt the encoder and end the broadcast.
Make the OBS scene do only necessary work
A meditation stream may need little more than a still image and audio. Keep the scene as light as the intended presentation allows:

- Remove unused sources and filters. OBS notes that sources can consume resources even when they are not visible.
- Prefer a static image over animation if motion is not part of the stream.
- Avoid complex scenes, resource-heavy browser sources, and costly filters that do not improve the broadcast.
- Use image assets sized sensibly for how they appear on screen rather than loading unnecessarily large files.
OBS identifies lower output resolution and frame rate, simpler scenes, fewer demanding sources, and fewer costly filters as ways to reduce rendering or encoding work. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide does not prescribe a meditation-specific scene or promise a particular power reduction.
Choose a modest OBS output profile and a reliable bitrate
There is no YouTube-published preset specifically for meditation. Choose output quality according to the visual detail and motion in your stream, your viewers’ needs, and your measured upload capacity. If 1080p is not important for a mostly static image, 720p can be a sensible lower-workload starting point; that is a practical inference from OBS’s guidance, not a YouTube requirement.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as a range
YouTube’s published H.264 guidance lists these example ranges for 30 fps:

| 1080p30, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder bitrate figures, not measurements of PC power use and not a requirement to select the recommended maximum. Check your upload speed and leave practical headroom rather than setting a bitrate that your connection cannot sustain. YouTube recommends testing the internet connection and stream before relying on it.

Encoder settings to check
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS is recommended for encrypted delivery.
- Codec: YouTube’s settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. Select a codec supported by your encoder and workflow, then follow the matching bitrate guidance rather than applying H.264 figures to another codec.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. A static meditation visual may not need a high frame rate; lowering output frame rate can also reduce OBS workload.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run a test broadcast with audio and movement similar to the real stream. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and video motion.
- Confirm the image, audio levels, and any overlays are correct, and check YouTube’s stream health and messages.
- With the broadcast active, let the display turn off. Verify that the PC remains awake and OBS continues sending the stream.
- Check stream health again after changing Windows power mode, OBS output resolution, frame rate, codec, or bitrate.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one uninterrupted stream will produce a single archive of unlimited duration. For encoder setup and stream management, consult YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Measure your own PC instead of assuming a wattage saving
Microsoft describes Best Power Efficiency as limiting background activity, but the official guidance does not quantify its savings for an OBS meditation stream. The reviewed OBS and YouTube guidance likewise does not establish a universal low-power profile or compare power draw between hardware and software encoding.
If you want a before-and-after figure, an optional plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure your specific PC and workload. Record comparable periods with the same stream settings, and treat the result as specific to that computer and test—not a guaranteed saving for other setups. No particular monitor is endorsed here.
