For a simple 24/7 loop, the most economical VPS setup is usually FFmpeg relaying an already encoded video file—not re-encoding it in real time. Choose a plan for sustained outbound data, full recurring cost, and recovery options, then test the actual stream. A provider guide suggests 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM for a static loop, but that is guidance, not a verified minimum. No like-for-like current price evidence establishes one VPS provider as the universal cheapest or best.
What a low-cost VPS must do
A VPS can send a prerecorded video to YouTube continuously, but “streaming” can describe workloads with very different demands:
- File relay or stream-copy: FFmpeg sends an already encoded file without changing its video and audio streams. This is the lighter starting point for a straightforward loop.
- Real-time encoding or rendering: FFmpeg must encode, resize, add overlays, render scenes, or produce multiple outputs. Do not assume a small plan suited to a static loop can handle this; test the actual workload and account for CPU or GPU needs.

Estimate continuous transfer before choosing a plan
Use the stream’s total bitrate and intended runtime to estimate outbound traffic, then compare that estimate with the provider’s transfer allowance. Include audio in the total bitrate and check whether the provider counts traffic both ways. Verify the provider’s billing unit and overage or throttling policy; do not assume a low-cost plan includes unlimited sustained egress.

Keep the stream key private. YouTube says to treat it like a password: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio’s stream settings.

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance to select a supported protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your stream. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options; audio options include AAC and MP3. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current table for your chosen output rather than copying an unrelated example.

Follow YouTube’s keyframe guidance: use a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube also recommends CBR. Use RTMPS where available.
2. Start with a stream-copy loop
For an already encoded file, a basic FFmpeg command can loop it and copy its existing streams to YouTube’s ingest endpoint:

Keep the destination private: the key is a credential. This example does not encode or repair an incompatible source. Confirm that the file’s codecs and stream parameters are accepted by YouTube before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. If the source needs a different resolution, bitrate, codec, or overlays, configure and test a real-time encode instead; the CPU guidance for a static loop does not establish what that more demanding job needs.
3. Test and monitor the actual broadcast
- Before a public launch, test the stream with audio and video movement similar to the real broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and checking stream health.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages during launch and operation. A live FFmpeg process alone does not confirm a healthy public stream.
- Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or equivalent so you can detect and restart it after failure. Check logs and alerts, and plan how you will respond to an ingest or network interruption.
- Account for YouTube’s archive behavior: its setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume how a particular channel’s archive or policy outcome will work for an indefinitely running broadcast.
Copyright, reused material, and continuous-loop risks
A working encoder does not establish that a channel or video complies with YouTube’s rules. Make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio you broadcast, and review YouTube’s current channel and monetization policies for your content. Troubleshooting a 24/7 FFmpeg stream
