What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with a computer you already own, OBS, and a tested internet connection. For a lesson made mostly of slides or a talking head, try 720p at 30 fps first; move to 1080p only if it improves readability or camera detail and your upload connection can sustain it. Use a local recording and plan around YouTube’s archive limit: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. A low-cost setup can avoid buying a dedicated streaming PC, but no particular computer, connection, or backup arrangement can guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
What you need to start
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Begin with the computer and internet connection you already have; add hardware only to address a specific problem you have identified.
- A computer that can keep working: It must play the recording and encode the stream at the same time. Test it for heat, dropped frames, and stability over a long session before relying on it unattended.
- OBS: Use OBS as the encoder that sends the video to YouTube. OBS recommends starting with its Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish basic settings.
- A reliable upload connection: Measure upload speed at the place and time you plan to stream. Download speed does not tell you whether the connection can send a live stream reliably.
- Storage for a local recording: Record locally if you need a dependable copy for review or replay. The required disk space depends on recording quality and duration, so check the file size during a test rather than guessing.
- Optional audio or power equipment: A USB microphone may help if you will speak live; a UPS for the computer and router may help with brief local power interruptions. Neither is a universal requirement, and the appropriate equipment depends on your room, devices, and needs.
No fixed rupee budget is reliable without knowing whether you already own a suitable computer, your connection, local power conditions, and how much equipment you need to buy. Test what you have before spending.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Confirm access before preparing an unattended schedule.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the stream key and stream URL for that stream. Treat the key like private access information: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to that destination. Do not show it in the video, screenshots, or a public chat.
- Configure OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings, choose the YouTube encoder workflow, and enter the stream key and URL if requested. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then review its output settings against the targets below instead of assuming its result suits a long-running stream.
- Add the recording and test the loop. Set up the prerecorded lesson or lesson sequence in OBS and test its playback, transitions, and audio for a full cycle. Do not rely on an untested playlist or assume a restart will resume at the intended point. The exact playlist and unattended-restart behavior depends on your OBS setup.
- Preview before going live. Confirm that YouTube receives the correct video and audio, inspect stream health, and check that the local recording is being written. Go live only after the preview is correct.
OBS and YouTube settings can vary with software versions and stream workflows. Keep a private note of the working configuration, but never store or share the stream key where others can access it.

Choose a resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval
YouTube’s published H.264 live-ingest guidance gives these recommended bitrates for the two common 30 fps lesson targets below. They are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or encoder will work without interruption. For mostly static teaching material, start lower and check whether text remains readable on a phone-sized preview.
| Lesson output | YouTube-recommended H.264 ingest bitrate | Upload capacity with 20% headroom | When to try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | At least 3.6 Mbps measured upload, before other household traffic | A sensible first test for slides or a talking-head lesson where the text stays legible. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | At least 6 Mbps measured upload, before other household traffic | Try if small text or camera detail benefits and the connection remains stable. |
- Rate control: Use CBR, which YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube’s guidance supports AAC or MP3 audio. Listen to the preview on headphones and check that lesson speech is clear and not clipping.
- Frame rate: 30 fps is a reasonable starting point for slides and ordinary spoken coaching. Higher frame rates are not automatically useful for a mostly static lesson.
YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewers, so sending a higher-resolution source is not necessary just to provide viewers with playback options. Prioritize stable delivery and readable lesson material over a larger number in the settings.
Measure upload capacity and leave room for other traffic
YouTube recommends about 20% more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate, with more room if other network traffic or a backup stream is present. The table’s capacity figures are simple arithmetic using that recommendation; they are not a guarantee of stable service.

- Run an upload speed test on the actual computer, network, and location you will use, preferably near the time the stream is scheduled.
- Compare the measured upload speed with the selected stream bitrate plus the recommended headroom: for example, 3 Mbps becomes 3.6 Mbps, while 5 Mbps becomes 6 Mbps.
- Repeat the test at different times if the connection is shared or varies during the day. Leave additional capacity for household use and any backup stream.
- Use wired Ethernet where practical, then test the complete setup again. A wired connection does not remove the need to check real performance.
If OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health deteriorates, first lower the output resolution or bitrate and test again. Also check whether other devices or applications are using the upload connection.
Record locally and plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance puts it plainly: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That makes one uninterrupted 24-hour event a poor sole source for a replay.
- Enable a local recording and verify that the file grows during the test. OBS recommends using an available hardware encoder for recording where possible.
- Play back the resulting file before relying on it. Check both picture and audio and confirm that it covers the intended lesson.
- If replay availability matters, consider planned sessions shorter than 12 hours and verify each archive in YouTube Studio. A local copy remains useful even when an archive is available.
- Do not assume that a stream’s archive or watch-hour outcome is automatic. YouTube’s August 12, 2026 Creator Liaison explanation says qualified watch hours can come from public long-form videos, including archived livestreams, while streams that are not archived do not count as qualified watch hours. Check the actual archive and Studio reporting for your stream.
Storage sizing depends on the recording quality and retention period, neither of which is fixed for every coaching channel. Record a test session, note its file size and duration, and use that rate to plan disk space.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
A stream that works for a few minutes has not yet demonstrated that it can run unattended. YouTube recommends testing, monitoring stream health, and verifying local files. Test the actual class loop and the likely failure points before treating the setup as operational.
- Video and audio: Watch and listen through a complete lesson cycle, including any transition between recordings.
- Long-session stability: Run a sustained test and watch for overheating, encoder overload, dropped frames, audio drift, and interruptions.
- Internet interruption: Test what happens after a brief connection loss. Confirm whether the stream resumes, whether OBS needs intervention, and whether the local recording continues.
- Power loss and restart: If your stream must resume after a local outage, test the actual computer, router, power backup, and restart process. The available guidance does not guarantee that OBS will recover from every power or network failure.
- Recovery plan: Decide who can check the stream and how they will access the computer without exposing the stream key. Do not promise yourself a working failover until you have tested it.
Use YouTube’s upload-time calculator to estimate how long lesson files may take to upload, and its copyright safety checklist to review material before scheduling it.

YouTube’s monetization policy places repetitive or mass-produced material under its “inauthentic content” policy and says such content is ineligible for monetization under that policy. Replaying the same coaching recording continuously may raise review risk, but the policy outcome depends on the channel and the content; no channel-specific decision can be predicted here. A live wrapper around an existing lesson does not by itself make that lesson eligible. Check YouTube’s current monetization policy before relying on revenue from repeated streams.

A local OBS setup lets you use equipment you already own, but the computer, internet connection, and power at that location remain part of the streaming chain. Hosted automation is an alternative when leaving a computer running at home is impractical. Compare any option on total cost, looping and unattended recovery, control of the stream key and schedule, local-recording needs, performance on your actual connection, and support in India. Those are decision criteria, not claims that every provider offers each capability.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is #1 as the hosted option to consider for this job: it keeps an uploaded YouTube video running from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. The computer at home does not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not broadcast from a camera.
