OBS Studio is the best starting point for most people who want to stream live and save a local recording. It is free, works on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and offers flexible scenes and audio mixing. Choose a paid production tool such as Wirecast Pro if you specifically need isolated camera recordings or multitrack audio. The right choice still depends on your computer, recording settings, and the kind of production you want to make.

Best live streaming software that can record

Software Best fit What is established What to verify
OBS Studio Most creators who want a capable, no-cost starting point Free and open source; supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, with scene-based production and audio mixing. OBS Project Whether your computer can handle your particular encoder, resolution, frame rate, scenes, and simultaneous recording and streaming. The published system requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, so check current platform support before relying on exact minimum OS versions. OBS system requirements
Wirecast More complex production, especially when ISO camera capture or separate audio tracks matter Wirecast Pro lists ISO recording and multitrack audio recording. Its workflow supports cameras, screen capture, IP cameras, audio devices, and other inputs. Wirecast features and pricing Which edition includes the features your workflow needs, the current price, and whether your storage can sustain the recording workload.
Streamlabs Desktop Creators evaluating a streamer-oriented desktop workflow Streamlabs publishes system guidance, including 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended for resource-intensive configurations. Streamlabs Desktop requirements Check current recording capabilities and subscription pricing directly; those details are not established here.
vMix People comparing production software with multiple editions The official edition comparison indicates recording is available in higher tiers and lists up to 4096 Ă— 2160 in higher editions. vMix edition comparison The returned edition information does not establish exact recording or resolution limits for each tier; verify the current comparison before choosing an edition.

What to decide before choosing

One program recording, ISO recordings, or separate audio?

A local program recording saves the finished composition viewers see. ISO recording captures individual sources—such as separate cameras—so you can edit them independently later. Multitrack audio similarly preserves separate audio sources rather than only a mixed output. If you only need a finished copy of the show, a straightforward local recording may be enough. If post-production requires independent camera or audio sources, confirm that the software edition explicitly supports those formats; Wirecast lists ISO and multitrack recording as Pro features.

How demanding is the production?

A scene with a camera and a few graphics is a different workload from several high-resolution cameras, screen capture, animated overlays, and multiple recordings. OBS cautions that meeting compatible system requirements does not guarantee successful streaming or recording: encoder choice, output settings, and scene complexity affect performance. Streamlabs’ guidance gives a useful reference rather than a universal guarantee: 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms, 8 GB RAM minimum, and 16 GB or more for resource-intensive streaming configurations. That guidance is from a Streamlabs article originally published in 2023 and updated 2026-04-08; it is not a promise that any given platform or computer will perform well at those settings.

Can your storage keep up?

Long recordings need adequate free space, and higher-bitrate or multitrack captures write data faster and consume more storage. For Wirecast’s local multitrack ISO capture and replay workflow, Telestream recommends a high-speed SSD or fast RAID array. An external SSD may suit a simpler setup, but check sustained write speed, capacity, and connection compatibility for your actual recording format; no particular model or capacity is established here.

OBS Studio: a practical starting workflow

OBS is a sensible first choice when you want local recording and live output in one desktop application without a software license cost. Exact menu labels and available controls can vary by operating system and OBS version, so use the current build’s settings and your platform’s requirements.

  1. Install OBS from the official project site. Confirm your operating system is supported and that your hardware can handle the planned resolution, frame rate, sources, and encoder. The OBS requirements page is dated 2021-08-25; consult current platform information rather than treating its exact minimum versions as current. Download and platform information.
  2. Build a scene. Add the sources for your show, such as a camera, screen capture, graphics, and audio devices. Arrange and test them in the preview before going live. Keep the scene as simple as the production allows if the computer struggles.
  3. Set up audio. Check microphone and other input levels in OBS’s audio mixer, then make a short test recording. Listen back for clipping, missing sources, or unwanted desktop audio before relying on a live session.
  4. Configure streaming and recording outputs. Select the appropriate stream service and enter its stream key only in OBS’s stream configuration. Choose an encoder and output settings your computer can sustain. In recording settings, choose a file location with enough free space and a format and quality appropriate to your editing workflow. A stream that appears stable does not by itself prove the local file is recording correctly, so confirm the recording indicator and inspect a test file.
  5. Run a short end-to-end test. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream if the platform offers that option, record at the same time, and review the saved file. Check picture, sync, audio, dropped frames, file location, and available storage before a longer broadcast.
  6. Start the real stream and recording deliberately. Verify that the platform has accepted the stream, then confirm the local recording is active. At the end, stop recording and streaming cleanly and check that the file opens and contains the expected duration.

Paid production: when Wirecast may be worth evaluating

Wirecast is a candidate when a production needs more than a single mixed program file. Telestream lists camera, screen-capture, IP-camera, and audio-device inputs, and identifies ISO recording and multitrack audio recording as Wirecast Pro capabilities. For those workflows, assess not just the software edition but also the number and type of sources, storage throughput, and post-production requirements.

Cost and setup trade-offs

  • OBS: No software price, but you supply and maintain the computer, storage, and capture equipment needed for your production.
  • Paid production software: May make sense when a specific feature—such as ISO or multitrack recording—saves meaningful production or editing time. Verify the edition and recurring price rather than assuming every tier has the same capabilities.
  • Hardware and storage: Budget for sufficient computer capacity and reliable storage. Cameras, microphones, and capture devices should match your sources and operating system; no universal equipment package suits every setup.

When a cloud 24/7 stream is a different solution

Desktop streaming software is for producing and recording a live show from your computer. If your actual need is to keep prerecorded video playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, that is a different job: StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube, not a desktop studio for capturing a camera-based live show. In 2026, a third-party roundup describes it as a hosted prerecorded-streaming service; that source does not establish external program terms. iTechGuides’ 2026 roundup.
