If your video can be sent without re-encoding, prioritize monthly outbound transfer, a suitable route to YouTube’s ingest servers, recovery and monitoring, and the full recurring cost. If you need to transcode, choose a VPS only after checking that its CPU can sustain your actual encoding settings. DigitalOcean is one documented option to compare—not a proven winner for every region or workload.
Start by deciding whether FFmpeg needs to re-encode
This choice determines how much server capacity you need. FFmpeg streamcopy passes packets from the input without decoding, filtering, or encoding. It avoids the work of video encoding, but it is only suitable when the source streams and target output are compatible. FFmpeg explains streamcopy and its limitations in its official documentation.
Use streamcopy when the source already fits
For a compatible file, a loop can be sent to YouTube using FFmpeg’s streamcopy option, -c copy. Because FFmpeg is not re-encoding the video, the workload can require much less compute than transcoding. Check the actual input streams and test the complete output before relying on it continuously.
Plan for transcoding when the output must change
Changing resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, or applying filters requires FFmpeg to decode and encode video. Encoding can be computationally expensive and can reduce image quality. Do not assume an entry-level shared-CPU plan will sustain your settings: test your intended input and output on the candidate VPS, including representative motion and audio.

Use YouTube’s ingest recommendations as the compatibility target
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 among its supported ingest options. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every source file or FFmpeg command will work.
Bitrate guidance for common resolutions
YouTube’s H.264 table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60. The corresponding listed minimums are 5 Mbps for 1080p30, 6 Mbps for 1080p60, and 3 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60. Use settings appropriate to the source and desired output; a higher bitrate alone cannot restore detail absent from the original video.

Stream key and testing
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its stream key as the destination credential in FFmpeg. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or public repositories. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Confirm that the feed arrives, audio is present, the video is stable, and YouTube reports no ingest problem before leaving it unattended.
Estimate outbound transfer before choosing a plan
For one outgoing feed, the VPS uploads the stream to YouTube. YouTube distributes it to viewers, so do not multiply the VPS’s outgoing traffic by the viewer count. Add traffic only if the server sends separate simultaneous outputs to other destinations.

Approximate decimal transfer is bitrate in megabits per second Ă— seconds Ă— 1,000,000 Ă· 8 Ă· 1,000,000,000. The following calculations use continuous streaming and a 30-day month; they exclude protocol overhead, reconnects, and operational headroom.
| Outgoing bitrate | Approximate per day | Approximate per 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB | 1.944 TB |
| 10 Mbps | 108 GB | 3.24 TB |

Round up when comparing plans, then check how the provider counts transfer. A plan that looks inexpensive by monthly VM price may cost more if its included egress is too small.

What to compare in a Linux VPS
- Encoding workload: Is FFmpeg using streamcopy or transcoding? For transcoding, validate sustained CPU performance with your actual settings rather than relying only on a plan’s core count.
- Transfer allowance and overage: Compare the monthly quota with your bitrate-based estimate, account for headroom, and check whether allowances are pooled and how overage is billed.
- Region and routing: Choose an available Linux region with a suitable, stable path to YouTube ingest. No evidence establishes one universally best region; validate connectivity from the region you plan to use.
- Operations: Check reboot behavior, logs, monitoring, backups, access controls, and support. A VPS does not automatically restart FFmpeg or alert you when a stream fails.
- Full recurring cost: Include compute, transfer, disk, backups or snapshots, public address charges, taxes, and the time required to maintain the server.
DigitalOcean: a documented option, not a universal winner
DigitalOcean publishes Linux hosting and Droplet pricing, making it a practical example to compare. Its Linux hosting page lists Basic Droplets from $4/month for Regular and $7/month for Premium, dedicated-CPU General Purpose plans from $63/month, and CPU-Optimized plans from $42/month; plans and prices are volatile, so check the current Linux hosting page before ordering. Its description of CPU-Optimized plans as suitable for workloads such as video streaming does not establish that this tier is necessary for a streamcopy loop.
DigitalOcean says Droplets include transfer and charges $0.01/GiB for additional outbound transfer; the allowance is pooled across the team. Billing varies by plan family, and powered-off Droplets can continue to incur charges. Verify the live plan’s allowance, region, storage, address charges, taxes, and overage terms in its Droplet pricing documentation, which was marked last verified August 25, 2026. These details do not make DigitalOcean categorically best: the available information is not an independently tested, like-for-like comparison of VPS providers for this workload.

Keep a self-managed stream recoverable
With a VPS, you are responsible for keeping the FFmpeg process running and noticing failures. Before treating the stream as unattended, arrange monitoring and logs, test recovery after a process exit or server reboot, and confirm that reconnects restore the feed as intended. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; do not assume that buying a VPS alone provides process supervision or stream recovery.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not administer a Linux server, StreamNeo is a managed YouTube service: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo says it loops uploaded videos from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Nothing has to stay on at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with the first day free and no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only, not from a camera. See StreamNeo for current service details, or start the free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube charge the VPS for each viewer watching the stream?
No. For a single outgoing feed, the VPS sends the stream to YouTube; YouTube distributes playback to viewers. The VPS’s outbound usage follows the feed it sends.
Can every video be looped with FFmpeg streamcopy?
No. Streamcopy depends on compatibility between the source streams and the intended output. Test the file and destination before relying on it continuously.
