The best harmonium is the one that sounds even across its keyboard, responds reliably to your touch, and suits the music and places you’ll play. Before buying, test the actual instrument, decide whether extra reed banks or a scale changer meet a real need, and check that you can get competent service.
How a harmonium makes sound
A harmonium is a free-reed keyboard instrument. Hand-operated bellows move air through reeds when keys open the airflow; stops select routes to reed banks. A drone control sustains a fixed pitch, while a coupler links a key to an additional note an octave away. A scale changer shifts the keyboard’s relationship to the reed bank. Control names and layouts vary, so confirm how the specific model works.
What to assess before you buy
Sound and key response
Try every key across the range. Listen for consistent tone and tuning, and check that notes respond promptly at both gentle and stronger bellows pressure. An individual instrument’s sound and response are more informative than its feature list.
Bellows and action
Move the bellows through their range and check that they operate smoothly and hold air adequately. Keys should return without sticking. Ask the seller to demonstrate the exact instrument you may buy, rather than relying only on a sample or description.

Reed banks
Harmoniums may have one, two, or three reed sets. Additional banks can create more tonal layering and volume, but they also require more airflow and add parts that need to remain in tune. Choose the configuration for the sound and repertoire you want; a larger reed count is not, by itself, a measure of quality.
Scale changer
A scale changer shifts the keyboard so the same fingering can sound in different keys. This can be useful when accompanying singers with different ranges, but the mechanism adds complexity and maintenance considerations. Choose it when transposition is useful enough to justify those trade-offs.

Range, size, and service
Match the keyboard range and body size to your repertoire, playing space, and travel needs. Haribhau’s catalog lists double-reed instruments with 27, 32, 39, and 44 keys, among other configurations; these are examples of available designs, not proof that one range is best for everyone. Ask what tuning reference the seller uses, what adjustment or return support is available, and whether a competent repairer can service the instrument locally. These questions matter especially when buying remotely.

Use the same checks on each instrument you are considering, and compare its qualities against your own needs:
- Sound consistency, tuning, and response across the keyboard.
- Bellows movement and ability to hold air; keys that return freely.
- Keyboard range and body size for your repertoire and transport needs.
- Whether extra reed banks provide a sound you actually want.
- Whether transposition makes a scale changer worthwhile.
- Seller support, return or adjustment terms, and access to local repair.

Buying a double-reed harmonium
A double-reed harmonium is a useful product category to compare if you want the additional tonal options of two reed banks. For an Indian harmonium for home practice, focus on the sound and action of the specific instrument, whether its range fits your playing, and whether its size is practical in your room. A fixed-keyboard harmonium may suit you if you do not need transposition. In every case, compare shipping, return terms, and service support; a catalog listing establishes that a configuration exists, not that it is a tested recommendation or currently available in your country.
Care and repairs
Store the instrument closed and covered in a stable, dry room, away from direct heat and damp floors. Operate the bellows and controls gently, and remove only loose external dust. If a sound problem appears, note which key, stop setting, and airflow conditions produce it so a technician can diagnose the issue.

Reed tuning, valve replacement, scale-changer alignment, and bellows repair need model-specific expertise. Use a suitable technician for internal work, and do not apply household oil or sprays inside the instrument.
