The right guitar humidity solution depends on where the moisture problem is: use a room dehumidifier to lower humidity in a persistently damp storage space, or two-way humidity-control packets inside a closed guitar case. Neither is automatically necessary: first measure relative humidity (RH) with a hygrometer, then follow your guitar maker’s care guidance.
Room dehumidifier or case humidity packs?
These products solve different problems. A room dehumidifier removes moisture from the air in a room; guitar-specific case packets work inside a closed case and can absorb excess moisture as well as add moisture. A hygrometer measures humidity but does not control it.
- Choose a room-level solution when measurements show persistently high humidity where the guitar is stored. Taylor Guitars advises using a room dehumidifier in that situation: Symptoms of a Wet Guitar.
- Consider case packets when the guitar is kept in a closed case and you want humidity buffering within that space. Taylor describes case packets for an over-humidified guitar, while D’Addario describes Humidipak Maintain as a two-way system for case use.
No comparative testing establishes a best room-dehumidifier model or a universal capacity for guitar storage. Select a unit using its manufacturer’s room-size and operating specifications, rather than assuming a case pack can dry an entire room.
What humidity should a guitar be kept at?
Manufacturer recommendations are close but not identical. Taylor identifies 45–55% RH as ideal and 40–60% RH as acceptable; Martin recommends 45–55% RH. Martin also recommends a temperature of 72–77°F (22–25°C). These are maker recommendations, not a guarantee that every guitar or environment will behave identically.

Use a hygrometer to check the actual conditions, rather than relying on how a room feels. Taylor says a hygrometer can be used in a guitar case, studio, or practice room: Guitar Care – Hygrometer.
Best approach for a humid guitar storage room
- Measure the space. Take RH readings where the guitar is stored, using a hygrometer suited to the room. If the guitar remains in its case, you can also monitor inside the case.
- Compare readings with the instrument maker’s range. Taylor recommends a room dehumidifier for a guitar stored in a high-humidity climate. If readings are already within the maker’s recommended range, continue monitoring instead of adding equipment by default.
- Choose a room unit for the room, not the guitar. Check the specific model’s stated room-size suitability, drainage requirements, noise, and controls. The available maker guidance does not name a best model or recommend a particular capacity.
- Monitor conditions after use. Check RH in the storage area and, if relevant, the guitar case. Follow the dehumidifier maker’s operating instructions and avoid treating a single reading as proof of a persistent problem.
Which Humidipaks should I use?
D’Addario’s Humidipak Maintain is a case-based, two-way product: the company says it adds or removes moisture to target 45–50% RH inside the case. Its product page states that packets last 2–6 months when kept in a sealed case; check their condition and follow the product instructions because service life can vary. See Humidipak Maintain.

- PROTECT YOUR GUITAR: Protects your instrument against warping, cracks and other damage cause by lack of humidification.
- TWO WAY HUMIDITY CONTROL: The first two-way humidity control that maintains a constant 45%-50% relative humidity level within your instruments case
- AUTOMATIC HUMIDIFIER: It automatically maintains the optimal 45%-50% relative humidity level within your instrument case, eliminating the guesswork and potential mess related to refilling a humidifier.
- AUTOMATIC ADJUSTMENTS: No more manual adjustments based on seasonal changes, geographic locations, temperature, or other factors unlike refillable humidifiers.
D’Addario Support says Maintain may be used around 45–55% RH and that a humidity device may not be needed when the environment naturally stays in range. At readings of 40% RH or lower, its guidance is to use Restore packs first rather than treating Maintain as the answer to very dry conditions. Consult the support guidance, product instructions, and guitar maker’s recommendations: Which Humidipaks Should I be using?
Case packs are not a substitute for a room dehumidifier when the whole storage area is persistently humid. Their stated target applies within the instrument case, not across a room.

- HOW BOVEDA WORKS FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS: Boveda 49% RH protects wood instruments & their accessories by stabilizing the humidity within the ideal range—45–55% RH. If the air inside a case is too moist, Boveda absorbs that moisture. If it's too dry, Boveda releases small amounts of water vapor into the case. Wide humidity fluctuations will cause the wood to expand or shrink, which puts stress on the instrument & degrades its performance abilities.
- CHOOSE BOVEDA: Boveda's the only patented 2-way humidity control solution with more than 25 years of experience. Using saltwater in our humidity packs, we provide the fastest, most precise humidity control in the market for wood instruments. When you invest in an instrument, you want to ensure you take care of it to produce optimal sound. Boveda is the only humidity solution that can do so within 24-48 hours.
- HOW TO USE: Always insert a Boveda pack into the included protective Boveda Fabric Holder before using in an instrument case. Remove the Boveda from the plastic bag before using. DO NOT cut or open the brown humidity packet. Slip the packet into the holder. Place in case and close the lid. BOVEDA DOES THE REST. Replace every 3 months. NEVER MIX the 49% with any other %RH.
- WHO IS THIS LARGE BOVEDA KIT FOR: Players of acoustic guitar; hollow-body guitar; nylon string guitar; semi-hollow body guitar; guitarrón hollow-body bass; cello/violoncello; double bass/upright bass; bass clarinet; or bassoon. Professional musicians; band & orchestra leaders; instrument techs; music teachers; hobbyists & student musicians use Boveda packs for easy & precise humidity management for instrument storage.
What to do if a guitar seems over-humidified
Taylor lists case-based two-way packets as an option for an over-humidified guitar. Its guidance says to consider a more aggressive dehumidifier if there is no change within 10 days of using the suggested case packets. That is an escalation point from Taylor, not a universal recovery timetable: Spot & Fix an Over-Humidified Guitar.
If you suspect physical damage, or the guitar’s condition does not improve, contact the instrument maker or a qualified repair service. Martin warns that conditions outside its recommended humidity range can contribute to cracking, warping, or other damage: Martin Guitar FAQs.

How to compare humidity-control options
- Where it works: a room unit treats the room; case packets work inside a closed guitar case.
- What it does: a room dehumidifier removes moisture from room air; two-way packets can absorb or release moisture to buffer case humidity.
- What the measurements show: compare RH readings before and after use in the space the product is intended to affect.
- Requirements and upkeep: check room-unit size and operating requirements against the specific model. For case packets, follow the product’s replacement guidance and check packet condition.
- Instrument compatibility: use the guitar maker’s care guidance when deciding whether intervention is appropriate.
