Cabrini Review: A Moving Lead Performance in a Conventional Epic

Cristiana Dell’Anna anchors Cabrini, an earnest and polished biopic whose humanitarian purpose is compelling, even if its conventional approach leaves little room for grit or ambiguity.

Cabrini is an earnest, visually polished biographical drama led by a committed performance from Cristiana Dell’Anna. Its account of Francesca Cabrini’s work among vulnerable children has clear humanitarian force, but the film’s long, carefully arranged approach can feel more inspirational than searching. It is best suited to viewers who welcome a traditional historical drama and are willing to trade grit and ambiguity for an accessible story of persistence.

What is Cabrini about?

Directed by Alejandro Monteverde and written by Monteverde and Rod Barr, Cabrini follows Francesca Cabrini after she arrives in New York City in 1889. An Italian immigrant facing hostility, illness, poverty, and institutional resistance, she campaigns for housing and healthcare for orphaned and destitute children.

The conflict is less a mystery about what Cabrini believes than a struggle to make people with authority act on it. That focus gives the film a clear dramatic engine: each appeal tests her resolve and brings the human cost of official indifference into view. The story’s religious and humanitarian convictions are central to its perspective, though the campaign for dignity and care is legible beyond a specifically Catholic audience.

Does the film work as a character portrait?

Dell’Anna is the film’s strongest asset. She plays Cabrini as determined without making her seem untouched by vulnerability; the character’s poor health gives her persistence a physical cost. The performance supplies personal urgency to a story that otherwise places considerable weight on its message and successive obstacles.

Cabrini [DVD + Blu-ray Combo] 2024
  • Run Time: 142 min.
  • Rating: PG-13
  • Bonus features included: Behind the Scenes "Who is Cabrini?" and Trailers
  • Audio Languages: English, English AD, Spanish, Portuguese
  • Subtitles: English, English SDH, Spanish, French, Portuguese

The film is less interested in unsettling its inspirational frame than in affirming it. Cabrini’s opponents and setbacks establish the scale of resistance, but the polished, conventional treatment can simplify the tensions that might make a historical portrait feel more complicated. Viewers looking for a rougher account of institutional power or a more psychologically ambiguous protagonist may find the characterization too contained.

How are the visuals and pacing?

The period drama is carefully composed, with dramatic lighting and an emphasis on striking images. Sarah Boslaugh of The Arts St. Louis praised its beauty and noted scenes modeled on Jacob Riis photographs of New York tenement life. That visual care supports the film’s sense of place, although its polished presentation may feel less gritty than the conditions in its story.

The film’s measured, conventional storytelling takes time to build its case. Angel’s FAQ and Rotten Tomatoes list the runtime as 2 hours 25 minutes; Angel’s title page lists 2 hours 22 minutes. That discrepancy makes the exact listing worth checking where runtime matters. Either way, this is a substantial feature, and its deliberate pace will suit viewers who want a full-scale inspirational drama better than those seeking a brisk or formally adventurous biography.

What did critics and audiences think?

Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 snapshot lists a 91% Tomatometer from 89 critic reviews and a 98% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 verified audience ratings. These scores and counts can change, and they describe the site’s listed reception rather than guaranteeing an individual viewer’s response. The critics’ consensus calls it “an uplifting biopic with a timeless message,” aided by Dell’Anna’s performance.

Individual reviews show more variety than the positive aggregate alone suggests. Steven D. Greydanus of Decent Films praised its emphasis on human dignity and solidarity against prejudice. TheWrap’s Zofia Wijaszka recognized its attention to Cabrini’s work and xenophobia but found that it did not leave a lasting impression; Markie Robson-Scott of The Arts Desk wanted more grit. Roger Ebert’s review excerpt, reproduced by 2521 Entertainment, described it as imperfect but dignified. Taken together, the response points to a film whose purpose and lead performance connect strongly with many viewers, even as its approach can feel restrained or overly polished to others.

Is Cabrini based on a true story?

Yes. The film dramatizes the life and work of Francesca Cabrini, focusing on her arrival in New York in 1889 and her efforts to secure care for children in need. It is a dramatic feature, not a substitute for a historical biography. 2521 Entertainment says Cabrini’s later network included 67 institutions across the United States, Europe, and South America; that figure is the production company’s account.

Rank #4

Is Cabrini worth watching?

Watch it if you want a performance-led, accessible biopic with an explicit humanitarian purpose, strong period imagery, and a protagonist whose persistence drives the story. Consider another film if you want a more abrasive visual style, sustained historical complexity, or a less conventional inspirational arc. The main trade-off is clear: Cabrini makes its case with conviction, but rarely complicates the case it is making.

Where can you watch Cabrini?

Angel lists the film as available to stream for Angel Guild members and offers Blu-ray and DVD purchase options on its title page. Availability and product listings can change, so check the official pages for your region: Angel’s Cabrini title page and its FAQ. Angel says scenes with Italian dialogue have English subtitles.

Is Cabrini appropriate for teens?

The film is rated PG-13 in the United States for thematic material, some violence, language, and smoking. Those descriptors are more useful than a blanket suitability judgment: consider the individual teen’s sensitivity to those elements and the context of the film’s themes. The rating and descriptors are listed in Angel’s official FAQ.
