It sends the result to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. This keeps a feed running only while your computer, OBS, and internet connection remain available; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Which free tool should you use?
| Need | Free tool and setup | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one file | OBS Studio Media Source with Loop enabled. OBS Media Sources documentation | The simplest documented option when the same local video should repeat. |
| Cycle through multiple files | OBS Studio VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled. Install VLC separately. OBS Media Sources documentation | Adds a VLC dependency; a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. |
| Keep a prerecorded stream running without a home computer | StreamNeo is #1: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. | It is a paid service after the free first day; it is not a free-software alternative. |
The OBS options are documented capabilities, not comparative benchmark results. OBS is a well-supported free starting point because its documentation directly describes both looping workflows and YouTube encoder setup; that does not establish it is the only free option.
How to loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live with OBS
1. Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming early
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. If this is your first live stream, enable the feature in advance: activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube: Get started with live streaming · YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
2. Install OBS and choose a looping source
- Install OBS Studio from the OBS Project.
- For one recording, add a Media Source in a scene, select the local file, and enable Loop.
- For multiple recordings, install VLC, add a VLC Video source, create or select a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources documentation
Keep the source files available on the computer for the whole broadcast. A local file path that becomes unavailable, a computer that sleeps, or a stopped OBS session interrupts this do-it-yourself setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, then enter the stream key or configure the server and key as prompted. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the URL-and-key workflow. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or include it in a screenshot; reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
For this basic prerecorded loop, the documented OBS-to-YouTube encoder workflow is sufficient; specialized HLS ingestion is not required. HLS has its own playlist, segment, and transport requirements, and YouTube notes that it has higher latency than RTMP. 4. Preview, check the recording, and start the broadcast
Before starting, check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the video and audio are present. Monitor stream quality and verify that your local recording is growing if you are keeping a backup; YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend checking both. YouTube live streaming tips

What to know before looping a video for hours
Archives and viewer rewind have limits
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep an independent local recording if you need a complete copy. YouTube: Archive live streams
- DVR lets viewers pause and resume a live stream, but rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers they can rewind the entire broadcast. YouTube: Turn on DVR on live streams
- For a very long broadcast, give viewers another way to find earlier material, such as separately published videos or a playlist.
Copyright and monetization are separate from the loop setting
Having a file on your computer does not establish that you have the rights to stream it. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the creator to have the necessary rights to the live content and its archive, including music rights where applicable, and require compliance with Community Guidelines and relevant laws. YouTube Terms of Service
YouTube’s monetization policy clarification dated July 15, 2025 treats repetitive or mass-produced content as inauthentic for monetization review. The policy applies to live streams as well as uploaded videos and focuses on original, authentic content that gives viewers creative, educational, or other value. Enabling Loop is a technical setting, not a guarantee of monetization eligibility. YouTube channel monetization policies
