It is not proof that Linda has recovered or that the family’s problems are solved.
What happens at the end of If I Had Legs I’d Kick You?
After the film’s escalating crises, Linda reaches the beach and enters the ocean. The ending then gives viewers their first full look at her daughter’s face. Because the girl has remained offscreen for most of the story, this is a striking change in what the audience is allowed to see.
The events themselves are clear: Linda reaches the water, and her daughter’s face is revealed. What the scene ultimately means is less certain. The film does not establish that Linda’s mental health has been restored, that the caregiving burden has lifted, or that the wider circumstances troubling her have been resolved.
Why does the film withhold the daughter’s face?
The camera stays close to Linda’s experience, while the daughter’s voice and medical care remain part of her daily life. In an Associated Press interview, writer-director Mary Bronstein said that showing a child’s face can redirect the audience’s empathy toward the child. Keeping the girl out of view therefore holds viewers near Linda’s overwhelmed point of view, rather than offering the familiar visual cue that might soften or reframe Linda’s behavior. When the face finally appears, the audience’s relationship to the daughter changes along with Linda’s. She is no longer only a voice, a medical need, or another pressure in an already collapsing life. The reveal permits a reading of renewed recognition or connection, but it does not guarantee reconciliation.
Is the beach scene a happy ending?
It can feel hopeful because the reveal opens the possibility of a different relationship between mother and daughter. It can also feel unsettling: the scene arrives after a severe crisis, and the film offers no assurance that the pressures behind it have passed. The most grounded reading is an emotionally open ending, not a clean recovery or a confirmed happy resolution.

The film does not establish that Linda has died, attempted suicide, or experienced a supernatural encounter. Those interpretations go beyond what the ending confirms. The beach and the face reveal are shown; a definitive explanation of the scene is not.
How the film’s pressure cooker shapes the ending
A24’s synopsis places Linda under several simultaneous strains: her child’s mysterious illness, an absent husband, a missing person, and a deteriorating relationship with her therapist. The story’s pressure comes from demands converging, rather than from one mystery that neatly explains everything. A24’s official film page describes that setup.

Images such as the collapsed ceiling, flooding, motel displacement, feeding tube, and strained work relationships give Linda’s overwhelm material form. The gaping hole in the ceiling, in particular, can suggest instability and intrusion, but the film does not assign it one definitive meaning. Concrete crises and surreal dread coexist.
Bronstein has connected the film’s emotional texture to her own experience caring for her seriously ill daughter while away from home. In an Associated Press interview, she described months of caregiving in a motel while her husband worked elsewhere; she said the experience brought on an existential crisis and prompted her return to writing. Bronstein has described the film’s escalating experience as a roller coaster that keeps accelerating after passing the operator. In a separate interview, she spoke of wanting to express the feeling of not being listened to, not being believed, and being told what is best for oneself. Those comments support reading the film’s disruptions as an embodied experience of pressure—not as clues to a single hidden answer.
