OBS Studio is the strongest free starting point for looping a sermon recording on a YouTube livestream: use a Media Source with Loop enabled for one video, or a VLC Video source for an ordered playlist of several recordings. It runs on your own computer, so that computer, its power and its internet connection must stay available while the broadcast is running.

For churches that want a free, self-managed setup, choose OBS. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded streams, but does not establish it as free; check its current price and plan limits before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder guide is the reference for its listed options.
Set up a sermon loop in OBS
Before you begin
- Install OBS Studio. OBS Project says it is free for any use under GPLv2, with no watermark or usage limitation. OBS Help Portal
- For a playlist, install VLC as well. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Prepare the sermon video files and decide whether the stream will repeat one recording or rotate through several in a set order.
- Check that the church has the rights needed for the sermon recording and any music, images or other third-party material included in it.
Loop one sermon file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene you will stream.
- Select the local sermon video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop property. OBS documents common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Check the scene preview and confirm the video plays before connecting to YouTube.
Rotate several recordings
- Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC).
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS.
- Add the sermon recordings to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled; OBS documents this behavior as enabled by default.
- Preview the playlist and check that each file starts and transitions as intended. OBS documents the source settings and requirements in its Media Sources guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a broadcast.
- Copy the broadcast’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if prompted by the selected connection method.
- Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health before making the broadcast public or confirming the scheduled start.
Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. YouTube says first-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so set up and test a new channel ahead of the intended broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for resolution, bitrate and keyframes rather than relying on a fixed value; those settings depend on the intended output and network conditions. Keep a local 24/7 stream running
With OBS, the computer is the encoder. It must remain powered on, connected to the internet and able to run OBS throughout the broadcast. A local outage, restart, sleep setting or loss of connectivity can stop the feed. The workflow advice in Looping Stream’s guide, updated June 12, 2026, recommends disabling sleep and unwanted restarts, testing every file and transition, monitoring stream health, keeping backup media, and watching at least one full playlist cycle. These are sensible checks, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

A dedicated computer is optional: it may suit a church that does not want its everyday workstation occupied, but the sources do not establish a particular model or specification as necessary.
Understand YouTube archiving and copyright limits
Do not count on one full-length archive
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If keeping a complete recording matters, make a separate recording or plan shorter broadcasts. YouTube’s encoder guidance

Clear rights for everything in the stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even licensed content may trigger an interruption unless the rights holder allowlists the channel through Content ID. A church setting does not automatically clear rights to music, images or other material. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and confirm the relevant permissions before broadcasting.
