For one feed that the Droplet must encode or transcode, use a 2-vCPU/4-GB CPU-Optimized Droplet as a starting point for benchmarking—not as a guaranteed capacity. DigitalOcean identifies video and live streaming as CPU-Optimized workloads, and that is the smallest configuration listed for the family. If the Droplet only relays an already encoded feed, begin with a small shared-CPU Basic Droplet and scale based on measured use. The right size depends on what the server actually does, not simply on the fact that the stream runs 24/7.
There is no official DigitalOcean benchmark establishing that a particular Droplet can encode every 24/7 YouTube stream at a given resolution. Treat the sizing guidance below as a starting point, then test the real workload before relying on it.
Choose a Droplet based on the streaming workload
First determine whether the server is forwarding a finished stream or doing sustained video processing. Encoding and transcoding are CPU-intensive; relaying an already encoded feed is a different, generally lighter workload. Also account for resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, number of outputs, and whether the source is pushed to the Droplet or pulled by it. DigitalOcean recommends matching the plan to observed resource use and load-testing before settling on production capacity. DigitalOcean’s Droplet plan guidance identifies live streaming as a CPU-Optimized use case. Its monitoring guidance recommends checking resource graphs and testing expected peak load.
| Workload | Starting direction | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Relay or forward an already encoded feed | Start with a small shared-CPU Basic Droplet. | Monitor CPU, memory, network throughput, and outbound transfer with the actual stream. Shared CPU is intended for low-to-moderate use with occasional bursts; sustained load may warrant a larger or different plan. |
| One feed encoded or transcoded on the Droplet | Benchmark a 2-vCPU/4-GB CPU-Optimized Droplet. | This is the smallest size in the family identified for video/live-streaming workloads, not a promise that it can encode every resolution, frame rate, codec, or preset. |
| Several encodes, a high-resolution output, or additional media services | Use dedicated CPU and size up from measured peak demand. | Concurrent encoding increases sustained CPU demand. Load-test representative content and monitor for encoder overload and dropped frames. |
| Network throughput or transfer cost is the constraint | Compare the plan’s throughput and included outbound transfer separately. | Premium CPU-Optimized plans advertise throughput up to 10 Gbps, but throughput is not the same as included transfer. Estimate the stream’s monthly egress and check the account’s pooled allowance. |
The 2-vCPU/4-GB recommendation is an inference from DigitalOcean’s workload category and the CPU-Optimized family’s listed entry size, not a DigitalOcean capacity guarantee or a reported benchmark.

Set the YouTube ingest stream correctly
Droplet size cannot compensate for an incorrectly configured encoder. Match the output to the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream, and choose the YouTube-recommended bitrate for the codec. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026 (the page gives no publication date), includes these H.264 examples:
| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or a DigitalOcean network allowance. Select the matching row for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. The YouTube live encoder settings guide supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure ingest option.

Use the stream key from the YouTube live control room in your encoder or relay configuration, and keep it private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Confirm that the chosen YouTube live event and encoder are using the same key before going live.
Estimate outbound transfer for a continuous stream
The stream’s bitrate gives a useful first estimate of monthly outbound data. At a constant 12 Mbps, the calculation is 12 megabits per second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 = 5.4 decimal GB per hour. That works out to approximately 129.6 GB per day and 3,888 GB (about 3.89 decimal TB) over 30 days, before packet and protocol overhead. This is arithmetic based on a steady bitrate, not a quoted DigitalOcean allowance.

For Droplet transfer billing, the outgoing feed is the key stream-related egress. Add other outbound traffic to your estimate; account for inbound traffic and any additional outputs when planning the broader workload. DigitalOcean pools included transfer across a team’s Droplets, and unused included transfer does not roll over. Its documentation lists additional outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB. The applicable included amount depends on the current plan and team usage, so check the live pricing page or control panel rather than assuming a fixed allowance from an old plan chart. See DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation.
Benchmark before leaving the stream unattended
A short successful launch does not establish that a Droplet will handle a perpetual stream. DigitalOcean recommends monitoring Droplet graphs and alerting on CPU, memory, disk, and bandwidth, and load-testing at expected peak use. Run representative content long enough to expose problems that can emerge over time.

- Check whether CPU stays saturated and whether the encoder reports overload or dropped frames.
- Watch memory for steady growth, and check disk use if the workflow records or caches media.
- Verify the stream remains connected and that the process does not restart unexpectedly.
- Compare actual outbound transfer with the estimate, including other traffic on the team account.
- Test the real codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, and number of simultaneous outputs you intend to run.
YouTube itself advises testing similar audio and movement before starting a live stream, then watching stream health. Its guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See the YouTube encoder settings and stream health guidance.

Continuous operation means the server and its transfer use continue to matter across the billing period. DigitalOcean’s documentation says bundled CPU Droplets continue to bill while powered off because the resources remain reserved; destroying the Droplet stops that Droplet’s billing. For v5 configurations, billing is by configured resources and actual hours without a monthly usage cap, so a continuous month’s total varies with the number of hours in that calendar month. Check the applicable plan and current account pricing before deployment. DigitalOcean billing documentation explains billing details.

Optional: deploy a streaming stack from the Marketplace
DigitalOcean Marketplace documents an SRS 1-Click App. The SRS Stack documentation lists support for publishing live streams using WebRTC, RTMP, or SRT, recording to MP4, multi-platform restreaming, and FFmpeg transcoding. Its API example requests a 2-vCPU/4-GB s-2vcpu-4gb Droplet in SFO2; that is an example deployment request, not a performance recommendation. The documentation was generated March 13, 2024, and software versions may have changed. See the SRS Marketplace listing and DigitalOcean Marketplace documentation.
