For most Indian YouTube devotional livestreams, OBS is the practical starting point: it can produce and encode a stream directly to YouTube. AWS Elemental MediaPackage is not a substitute for OBS; it is a cloud packaging and origin service for streams arriving from an upstream encoder. Add it only when you have a separate packaging or delivery requirement that a direct YouTube stream does not meet.
OBS and MediaPackage do different jobs
| Question | OBS Studio | AWS Elemental MediaPackage |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Desktop software for producing and encoding a livestream. YouTube lists OBS as an encoder and describes encoder streaming as supporting external audio/video equipment and advanced production. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder | Cloud service that receives streams from upstream encoders and packages/originates content for delivery. AWS describes a channel as the entry point for live streams from upstream encoders. AWS: Delivering live content from AWS Elemental MediaPackage |
| Fit for one YouTube destination | Can produce a stream and send it directly to YouTube. | Usually an additional infrastructure layer, rather than a replacement for the production encoder. |
| Input connection relevant to the AWS route | YouTube lists OBS as an encoder. AWS’s published OBS-to-MediaPackage example uses OBS to MediaLive over RTMP. | MediaPackage v2 lists live HLS and CMAF inputs pushed over HTTPS and requires at least one video track. Its documented inputs are not generic RTMP ingest. AWS: Supported inputs and outputs – AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 |
| Cost shape | YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge; computer, power, and internet costs are separate. | Usage-based charges include ingested video data and originated/packaged content measured in GB. A real estimate depends on region, duration, and data/output assumptions. AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing |
| Setup complexity | Smaller starting setup when the goal is producing a single-destination stream. | Requires AWS channel and endpoint configuration; the published example also uses MediaLive and additional inputs. |
Choose the workflow that matches your stream
Use OBS direct to YouTube when
- You need to compose scenes, mix audio, add titles, or manage a live production from a computer.
- Your destination is a single YouTube livestream and you do not have a separate origin or packaging requirement.
- You can keep the production computer and its internet connection available for the duration of the stream.
YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming and verify access before the devotional event rather than at its start. YouTube encoder streaming help
Consider MediaPackage when
- Your workflow has an established need for cloud origin or packaging in addition to publishing to YouTube.
- You know which upstream encoder and supported input format will feed MediaPackage.
- You have a reason to operate and pay for the extra AWS components, rather than assuming a devotional stream inherently needs them.
What the AWS example actually connects
AWS’s published example is not a direct OBS-to-MediaPackage connection: OBS sends RTMP to AWS Elemental MediaLive, and MediaLive delivers HLS to MediaPackage. The guide instructs users to start the MediaLive channel before starting OBS for that particular RTMP workflow. The guide dates from 2018, so treat it as an illustration of the architecture and start order, not as assurance that every console screen or step matches today’s AWS interface. Check compatibility before building around this route. MediaPackage v2 documentation identifies HLS and CMAF over HTTPS as live input types and specifies a video track requirement; codecs supported depend on input and output type. Do not assume an ordinary OBS output setting intended for direct YouTube streaming can simply be entered as a MediaPackage input. AWS: MediaPackage v2 supported inputs and outputs

What is specific to Indian devotional channels—and what is not
The production choice is driven by the workflow, not by the devotional category. The available platform and AWS documentation does not establish a special MediaPackage setting or a devotional-content-specific technical requirement for Indian channels. It also does not establish availability for a particular AWS region, local last-mile upload reliability, or taxes and regional rates for an individual account. Check the chosen region and current AWS pricing against your own stream profile before estimating spend.
Do not add HDR, redundancy, DRM, multiple delivery formats, or continuous 24/7 operation merely because the stream carries devotional content. Those are separate requirements to evaluate if your audience or distribution plan actually calls for them. YouTube’s HDR guidance mentions OBS and AWS Elemental Live as encoder options for its HDR workflow and says YouTube HDR uses HEVC with RTMP(S) or HLS; that HDR-specific guidance does not make HDR or MediaPackage necessary for a standard stream. Plan AWS cost from the actual workload
MediaPackage pricing is usage-based: AWS charges for ingested video data and originated or packaged content measured in GB. There is no defensible India-specific monthly total from the information available here. To estimate your bill, identify the AWS region, stream duration, incoming data volume, outputs, and expected delivery volume, then use the current AWS pricing page for that region. Remember that the published OBS example includes MediaLive as well as MediaPackage, so a cost estimate for that architecture must account for the services actually used—not MediaPackage alone. Operational checks before going live
- Enablement: confirm YouTube live access in advance; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Destination: confirm the correct YouTube stream key is configured in the encoder or AWS workflow, and keep it private.
- End-to-end test: test the complete route—including any MediaLive and MediaPackage components—before the scheduled service. Confirm picture, sound, and the intended YouTube destination.
- Content rights: use music, recordings, and other material only when you have the rights or permissions required for livestreaming. A technical connection does not grant permission to broadcast devotional recordings.
Common problems and what to check
- OBS output will not connect to MediaPackage: check the intended AWS architecture and input protocol. MediaPackage v2 documents HLS and CMAF live inputs over HTTPS; the AWS OBS example routes OBS through MediaLive rather than sending ordinary OBS RTMP directly to MediaPackage.
- No video at the AWS input: verify that the configured input format is supported and that it includes the required video track. Codec support varies by input and output type.
- The AWS example does not start: for the 2018 OBS-to-MediaLive-to-MediaPackage example, AWS specifies starting the MediaLive channel before OBS. Check the current console and service documentation for present-day interface details.
- YouTube live is unavailable at event time: if this is a first-time stream, account for YouTube’s stated enablement window of up to 24 hours and confirm access ahead of the event.
- The AWS bill is higher or lower than expected: compare the actual region, ingest volume, duration, and packaged/originated data with the assumptions in your estimate; include MediaLive or other services if your design uses them.
Or let it run in the cloud
