There is not enough comparable, workload-specific evidence to name one VPS the best cheap choice for FFmpeg YouTube Live streaming in India. Amazon Lightsail is a documented example with a Mumbai region and published entry-level plans, but its listed CPU and price do not prove that it can encode your stream in real time. Choose a plan by testing your exact output settings, checking Mumbai-specific transfer limits, and monitoring YouTube stream health before relying on it.

What makes a VPS suitable for FFmpeg streaming?

A low monthly price or a stated vCPU count is not a performance guarantee. FFmpeg’s workload depends on what it must do: copying an already encoded video stream is different from decoding, scaling, and encoding video in real time. Before choosing a provider, define the stream you intend to run and assess the whole service, not just the advertised processor count.

  • Region and latency: Confirm that the provider offers the intended region in India, then test the path from your location and to YouTube’s ingest. A Mumbai data center may be useful for an operator in India, but location alone does not establish stream stability.
  • CPU and acceleration: Check the available processor and whether the plan provides usable hardware encoding if your workflow needs it. Test the actual FFmpeg command with representative video; vCPU count by itself says nothing conclusive about sustained encoding speed.
  • Memory and storage: Make sure the instance can run the operating system, FFmpeg, and any other services you need, and has enough disk space for the media and logs you intend to keep.
  • Outbound transfer: Check the allowance and overage terms for the exact region and billing plan. A continuous stream sends data for as long as it runs, and provider accounting may differ.
  • Continuous-use terms: Review the provider’s current acceptable-use and service terms for your intended broadcast schedule.
  • Recovery and monitoring: Plan how you will detect a stalled FFmpeg process or dropped YouTube connection, restart the process, and verify that the stream has returned.

A documented India-region example: Amazon Lightsail

AWS identifies Lightsail instances as VPSs and publishes Linux, public-IPv4 bundles with a Mumbai region. The following are AWS’s published plan specifications and prices, accessed in 2026; they are not FFmpeg performance tests. AWS states that Mumbai-region bundles include half the transfer allowance listed for the bundles.

Lightsail plan Published price Memory vCPUs SSD Listed transfer Mumbai transfer treatment
Entry bundle $5/month 0.5 GB 2 20 GB 1 TB Half the listed allowance
Next bundle $7/month 1 GB 2 40 GB 2 TB Half the listed allowance
Larger listed bundle $12/month 2 GB 2 60 GB 3 TB Half the listed allowance

These published prices are in USD. Check the current AWS price for the Mumbai region and your selected bundle before purchase, including applicable taxes, exchange rate, and the regional transfer treatment. The $5 tier is a price-and-specification example, not a recommendation that it can sustain a particular resolution, frame rate, or FFmpeg encoding workload.

DigitalOcean’s Marketplace catalog has described SRS, a self-hostable video platform with FFmpeg transcoding and functionality to publish streams to YouTube. That catalog entry was generated in March 2024; it does not establish current India-region availability, current Droplet prices, transfer limits for this workflow, or that a particular plan will perform adequately. Treat it as evidence of a relevant software stack, not a current India VPS recommendation.

Set YouTube’s ingest requirements before choosing a plan

YouTube’s official encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and recommends RTMPS. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings for current guidance.

For H.264, YouTube’s recommendations include 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 14 Mbps at 1080p60, and 3 Mbps at 720p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a VPS can encode or deliver the stream. The network connection must have capacity above the configured video and audio bitrate; no universal headroom multiplier is established here. YouTube also advises testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health during the event. It automatically transcodes live streams into formats for viewers.

Estimate transfer from your own bitrate and schedule

There is no single monthly data figure for a “1080p stream”: usage varies with the configured video and audio bitrates, hours online, and how the provider accounts for transfer. For a rough estimate, add the audio bitrate to the video bitrate, convert the total from megabits per second to megabytes per second by dividing by eight, and multiply by seconds streamed. This estimates payload volume before any provider-specific accounting differences.

For example, using YouTube’s 5 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 1080p30 as the video rate, plus an audio rate you choose, calculate against the number of seconds you actually expect to stream. Compare that estimate with the Mumbai allowance for the exact VPS bundle and confirm how AWS counts transfer. Do not assume the headline allowance applies unchanged in Mumbai.

Test the VPS with the intended stream before committing

  1. Fix the output specification. Decide whether FFmpeg will copy an existing compatible stream or encode it, and set the intended resolution, frame rate, codecs, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as the ingest baseline.
  2. Choose a candidate plan and region. Confirm current price, taxes, memory, storage, region, transfer allowance, overage policy, and provider terms for continuous streaming. Do not infer performance from vCPU count.
  3. Run a representative test. Use the actual source media and intended FFmpeg settings, including comparable motion and audio. Check whether processing keeps pace with playback and whether the instance remains stable over a meaningful test period.
  4. Publish to YouTube using RTMPS. Use the stream key from YouTube Studio as a secret: do not put it in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or shared repositories. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before resuming.
  5. Watch YouTube stream health and the server. Check YouTube’s ingest status as well as FFmpeg output and host resource use. A process that is running is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  6. Test failure recovery. Confirm what happens after a brief network interruption, FFmpeg exit, or dropped YouTube connection. Verify that your restart method works and that the stream actually resumes before scheduling a broadcast.
  7. Recheck transfer use over time. Compare provider-reported usage with your estimate, especially if the stream will run for long periods or continuously.

Common problems and what to check

  • FFmpeg falls behind or drops frames: The plan may not sustain the chosen encoding workload. Test the same source and settings again; reduce computational load or choose a plan that performs better in your workload test.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check ingest bitrate stability, network interruptions, encoder settings, and whether the configured keyframe interval follows YouTube’s guidance. Monitor both the server and YouTube’s live control room rather than relying only on FFmpeg’s process status.
  • The stream disconnects and stays down: A running VPS does not by itself restart a failed FFmpeg process or recover a dropped ingest. Check process supervision, logs, network status, and your restart procedure; test recovery before broadcasting.
  • The instance runs out of memory or disk: Inspect system and FFmpeg logs, free storage, and running services. Reduce unrelated workload or select sufficient memory and storage for the actual setup.
  • Transfer runs out sooner than expected: Recalculate from combined audio and video bitrate and actual streaming hours, then verify the selected region’s allowance and accounting rules. For Lightsail Mumbai, AWS says the allowance is half the listed bundle figure.
  • The stream key no longer works: Verify that the active YouTube event is configured for the key you are using. If the key was exposed, replace it rather than continuing with a compromised credential.
