Best Bitrate for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream Over 24 Hours

YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/HEVC at 4K60. A 24-hour playlist uses the same bitrate guidance, but needs upload headroom, monitoring, and a local recording plan.

For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, set video bitrate to 50 Mbps with H.264 or 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest rates, not guarantees of identical quality for every video or network. A 24-hour playlist does not change the recommended bitrate; it does create archive and DVR limitations you should plan around.

Choose the bitrate for your ingest codec

Codec sent to YouTube Recommended video bitrate at 4K/2160p, 60 fps Minimum bitrate
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps
AV1 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.265/HEVC 35 Mbps 10 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings. Use the live-ingest recommendations, not YouTube’s separate guidance for uploading prerecorded videos. The minimum figures are not the recommended target: choose the recommended rate if your encoder and sustained upload capacity support it.

Codec choice can therefore change the required upload capacity: YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC at this resolution and frame rate. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so your ingest setting is not a promise that every viewer receives a 4K60 rendition.

Configure the encoder for a stable live stream

Set rate control and keyframes

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as recommended by YouTube.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: 60 fps, with the output resolution set to 4K/2160p.
  • Transport: Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends secure RTMPS transport.

Account for 4K latency behavior

YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable for 4K at 60 fps; the stream uses normal latency. Do not expect a low-latency setting to override this limitation.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Calculate the upload capacity you need

The connection must sustain the total outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom to absorb fluctuations. In practical terms, plan for about 60 Mbps of available upload for a 50 Mbps H.264 video stream, or about 42 Mbps for a 35 Mbps AV1/HEVC video stream, before allowing for other outbound traffic or extra streams. These are planning calculations applying YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance, not separate YouTube bitrate recommendations.

YouTube’s advice is to “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended)” in its streaming tips. If other devices share the connection, available upload can fall during congestion. A second outgoing backup stream also needs its own bandwidth; include it in the total rather than assuming the primary stream’s headroom covers both.

What changes when the playlist runs for 24 hours?

Bitrate stays tied to codec, resolution, and frame rate

YouTube’s published live bitrate table is organized by ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate—not by playlist duration. A 24-hour run does not call for a different published bitrate. Stability over that length depends on maintaining the selected rate and monitoring the stream and network throughout.

Do not rely on YouTube to archive the entire run

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives. This is a warning, not a certainty that every longer stream will fail to archive. For a 24-hour run, make a local recording if you need a dependable copy; YouTube recommends a local archive backup in its live stream archive guidance.

DVR rewind may be limited

Archive availability and viewer rewind are separate issues. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Explain this to viewers if they may expect to scrub back through the full day; the DVR guidance describes the limitation.

Prepare and monitor the 24-hour stream

  1. Test a representative section first. Use the actual codec, 4K60 output, audio, and content with typical motion. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  2. Check the preview before going live. Confirm picture, audio, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s live workflow. Follow the steps in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  3. Check stream health during transmission. Monitor YouTube’s health indicators and the encoder for dropped frames, connection instability, or audio/video problems. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and streaming tips cover setup and monitoring.
  4. Verify the local recording. If you are recording a backup, confirm the file is being created and continues to grow; do not assume an archive exists until you have checked it.
  5. Plan recovery before the start. Prepare the encoder and test any failover arrangement that applies to your setup. YouTube’s operational guidance recommends preparing in advance and checking the stream before going live.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and long-run problems

  • Unstable stream or dropped frames: The connection may not sustain the total outgoing bitrate, or competing traffic may be consuming upload capacity. Check actual available upload, reduce competing network use, and preserve the recommended headroom. If needed, lower the stream settings to a rate your connection can maintain rather than repeatedly overshooting it.
  • Encoder cannot select the recommended rate: Confirm the selected codec and output mode. The recommended rate differs between H.264 and AV1/HEVC; use the value for the codec actually sent to YouTube.
  • Quality is inconsistent despite setting the recommendation: Check stream health, network congestion, encoder performance, and whether the source itself contains detail or motion that makes compression more noticeable. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee of identical results across content and network conditions.
  • Viewer cannot rewind far enough: This can be expected for streams longer than 12 hours because DVR may be limited or unavailable. It is not fixed by raising bitrate.
  • No complete replay after the stream: A run over 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Use the verified local recording as the dependable copy rather than treating YouTube’s archive as guaranteed.
