Curanderas Canarias. Tradiciones de Sanación, Beatriz Chinea’s documentary about traditional healing knowledge in the Canary Islands, is scheduled to screen in Candelaria on 22 October 2026, followed by a discussion with the director and other guests. The municipal listing gives two different start times—17:30 and 18:00—so check with the Culture Department before attending.
What the documentary is about
Directed and produced by Beatriz Chinea, Curanderas Canarias. Tradiciones de Sanación documents the memory and practices of curanderas, santiguadoras, yerberas and parteras in the Canary Islands. The Government of the Canary Islands describes the film as part of an audiovisual archive project intended to record stories, knowledge and rituals connected with traditional healing as intangible cultural heritage. Its accounts say the film includes testimony about practices such as santiguado, medicinal-plant use and laying on of hands. These are presented as cultural practices, not as evidence of medical efficacy. (Government of the Canary Islands, 10 September 2025; Government of the Canary Islands, 22 October 2025)
The government reports an approximate runtime of 30 minutes. Its account of a Telde screening describes the film as collecting a dozen direct testimonies. (Government of the Canary Islands, 10 September 2025; Government of the Canary Islands, 22 October 2025)
