There is no separate YouTube bitrate recommendation for a 24/7 prerecorded live stream. Choose a bitrate using YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you send. For 1080p at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are recommended targets, not guarantees against interruptions.
Recommended YouTube live bitrates by resolution and frame rate
The table shows YouTube’s published live-ingestion minimum and recommended bitrates, in Mbps. Pick the row that matches the signal actually sent to YouTube, rather than an unrelated file-export or upload setting.

The minimum column is not the same as the recommended target. A 1080p30 H.264 stream, for example, has a listed minimum of 5 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 14 Mbps. YouTube’s separate upload-encoding recommendations are for uploaded videos and should not be substituted for these live-ingestion settings.
How to choose a bitrate for a continuous prerecorded broadcast
- Check the file and intended output. Identify the resolution and frame rate you will send to YouTube, along with the ingest codec. Use those values to select the matching table row. If you change the output resolution, frame rate, or codec in your encoder, select the row for the changed output.
- Choose the recommended value if your connection can sustain it. YouTube advises choosing the highest resolution and bitrate you can stream. For a 24/7 broadcast, use a speed test and check that your upload capacity remains adequate; a brief speed-test result alone does not establish that the connection will stay stable around the clock.
- Set constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube specifies CBR for live encoding. Set the encoder’s bitrate to your selected target rather than relying on a variable-rate setting.
- Set keyframes to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use a supported ingest protocol and codec. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates can be up to 60 fps.
- Preflight the entire playback chain. Before starting the continuous broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the broadcast.
Does a 24/7 stream need low latency?
Usually, not just because it runs continuously. For a prerecorded broadcast without real-time interaction, a lower-latency mode is not automatically better: YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering and matters less when the broadcaster does not interact with viewers. Choose latency settings based on whether audience interaction is important, rather than treating low latency as a bitrate improvement.

What the bitrate does—and does not—guarantee
The published bitrate figures are encoder recommendations for particular output formats. They are not a promise that a stream will remain live or uninterrupted at that bitrate. For continuous use, the connection, encoder or playback service, and full stream path all matter; test the planned setup and monitor its health. YouTube’s cited live guidance does not establish a special bitrate, maximum duration, or separate eligibility rule for 24/7 prerecorded streams.
Common bitrate and reliability problems
- The stream drops or reports unstable health: Run an upload speed test, then check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Test the broadcast under representative audio and motion conditions and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- The bitrate is below the recommended target: Confirm that you chose the row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually being sent. If the connection cannot sustain the recommended value, consider a lower output resolution or frame rate and choose that matching row rather than confusing a listed minimum with the recommendation.
- You used the upload-video settings: Recheck the live-ingestion table. Upload encoding advice is separate and is not the basis for a live stream’s ingest bitrate.
- Playback buffers despite a strong connection: Check whether you selected a lower-latency mode. For a non-interactive prerecorded stream, that mode may not help and can increase playback buffering.
