For a conventional SDR YouTube Live channel, start with RTMPS, H.264, CBR, AAC audio, square pixels, progressive scan, and a two-second GOP (keyframe interval). Set bitrate to match the output resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations—not one rate for every stream. Treat these as an encoder starting point: verify the actual MediaLive output with representative content and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Recommended AWS Elemental MediaLive settings for YouTube
This baseline is for a conventional SDR stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery, lists CBR for live encoding, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and accepts AAC or MP3 audio. Match the output to the source and program rather than choosing the highest available resolution or frame rate by default. YouTube’s encoder settings provide the destination-side recommendations.
| MediaLive decision | Starting setting | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Destination protocol | RTMPS | Use the secure RTMP extension when the MediaLive output and YouTube workflow support it. |
| Video codec | H.264 for conventional SDR | Keep codec, output group, and YouTube ingest workflow compatible. YouTube also documents H.265 and AV1; their settings are separate from the H.264 rates below. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use for the YouTube-facing baseline; test any workflow-specific departure. |
| GOP / keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Configure MediaLive GOP size as two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. |
| Frame rate | Match the production requirement, up to 60 fps | Do not convert a lower-frame-rate source to 60 fps without a production reason. |
| Audio | AAC | Select a sample rate and channel layout appropriate to the program and input mode. |
| Pixel aspect and scan | Square pixels; progressive scan | Use these YouTube-recommended advanced settings for a standard progressive program. |
What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?
Choose the YouTube H.264 row that matches the actual resolution and frame rate. The following are YouTube’s published recommended ingest rates on its encoder-settings page accessed October 3, 2026—not independently measured MediaLive targets. Do not substitute AV1 or H.265 rates for these H.264 values. Source: YouTube Help.
| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Published minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 7 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
The minimums are floor recommendations, not the preferred targets. A higher resolution is not automatically better for a 24/7 channel: choose based on the source, the viewing experience you need, and the delivery and encoding resources available.

How to map those choices to MediaLive
MediaLive exposes GOP size and units, frame-rate numerator and denominator, rate-control mode, maximum bitrate, and codec-specific quality controls. Exact console labels and available options can vary with the selected codec and output configuration; use the corresponding output’s controls rather than assuming every field appears in every workflow. AWS’s MediaLive Channels API reference describes these controls.
Set the GOP in seconds
Set GOP size to 2 and select seconds as the unit, where that output configuration provides the choice. If configuring by frames instead, calculate the equivalent using the output frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Confirm the effective interval in the output rather than relying only on an entered number.

Choose CBR unless your tested workflow calls for another mode
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies CBR. AWS describes CBR as useful where variable rates are not handled; its MediaLive documentation also explains that VBR varies bitrate with video complexity, while QVBR targets a quality level subject to a maximum bitrate. AWS recommends VBR instead of QVBR when a specific average bitrate is desired. These AWS options do not replace YouTube’s platform-specific CBR baseline: if you depart from it, validate the resulting stream with your actual content and destination.
AWS’s QVBR examples are target-device guidance, not substitutes for YouTube’s published ingest-rate table: quality level 8–10 with a 4 Mbps maximum for primary screens; level 7 with 1.5–3 Mbps for PC or tablet; and level 6 with 1–1.5 Mbps for smartphones. AWS also says ENHANCED_QUALITY may slightly improve video quality without increasing bitrate when used with QVBR or CBR, but it might increase channel costs. Consider it an optional quality-and-cost choice, not a required YouTube setting. AWS MediaLive API reference.

Size input resources for the actual feed
MediaLive input specifications affect billing and resource allocation. AWS advises selecting codec, resolution tier, and bitrate values that meet or exceed the most demanding inputs; under-allocating resources can degrade output. There is no universal input specification for a 24/7 channel: base it on the real feed characteristics and the source’s most demanding conditions. AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide.
Should you use RTMP(S) or HLS?
Use RTMPS for a conventional SDR stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS as its secure delivery option. For an ordinary SDR channel, it is the straightforward baseline when supported by the MediaLive output and account workflow. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the encoder setting is about a reliable ingest signal, not producing a separate file for every viewer device. Consider HLS for the HDR workflow that needs it
HDR is a separate, tested workflow. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says HLS may be considered if an encoder does not support the required capabilities over RTMP. AWS’s HLS example is specifically a 4K HDR configuration: it uses an HLS output group instead of RTMP. It is not a direction to use HLS for every YouTube channel.
AWS published that example on April 14, 2021. Its configuration includes a YouTube HLS endpoint, HLS Basic Put, two-second segments, 3840×2160 HEVC at 20 Mbps, 59.94 fps, a two-second GOP, HDR10, and AAC audio. Those are details of that dated HEVC HDR example, not a current general-purpose template; in particular, its 20 Mbps figure is not comparable to YouTube’s current H.264 4K SDR recommendations. See AWS’s 4K HDR HLS tutorial and YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

Preflight and monitor a 24/7 channel
- Check the source and output match. Confirm the source can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio configuration before starting a continuous run.
- Verify the YouTube destination details. Use the correct ingest protocol and stream destination information for the workflow, and keep the stream key private.
- Test representative material. Include the program’s typical sound and motion, as well as demanding scenes, and check for audio/video sync, clipping, unexpected black frames, and output degradation.
- Watch YouTube stream health after starting. Check for ingest warnings or instability and adjust the relevant source, bitrate, or output settings based on what the status indicates.
- Plan operations for the source you actually have. A 24/7 service needs suitable input availability and operational monitoring. The settings above do not by themselves define a universal failover design or guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely setting or condition | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable ingest or dropped frames | Bitrate, source delivery, or resource allocation may not suit the output | Compare the actual output with the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation; inspect source stability and whether the MediaLive input specification meets the most demanding feed. |
| Motion looks soft or quality varies | Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and rate-control behavior may not match the content | Confirm the selected output row and whether you are using CBR as the baseline. Test any VBR or QVBR departure with representative motion. |
| Keyframe-related warnings or poor seeking behavior | GOP interval may be too long or expressed in the wrong units | Set an effective two-second interval, and verify the chosen seconds or frames interpretation. |
| Audio is missing, distorted, or arranged incorrectly | Codec, sample rate, channel layout, or input mapping may not match the program | Check AAC configuration and confirm the selected audio tracks and layout against the actual ingest. |
| HDR output does not behave as expected | An SDR-oriented RTMP(S) setup may not meet the HDR ingest requirements | Verify YouTube’s current HDR protocol and codec guidance and test the specific H.265/HLS workflow. Do not apply the 2021 AWS example as a universal preset. |
Cost and operating trade-offs
MediaLive’s resource allocation is tied to input specifications, including codec, resolution tier, and bitrate, so a 24/7 channel’s configuration is also a cost decision. Choose the lowest output that meets the program’s actual quality requirement, but do not undersize the input resources for the feed. The sources cited here do not establish a universal monthly cost, a single best resolution, or an all-purpose failover architecture; those depend on the specific channel design.
