Google TV Streamer (4K) is the best all-around non-Apple alternative to Apple TV 4K in the United States in 2026. It combines a modern Google TV interface with 32GB of storage, Gigabit Ethernet, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Matter and Thread support, and an official price of $99.99.
That is not the right answer for everyone. Choose Roku Ultra for simpler navigation, Fire TV for Alexa households and lower-cost 4K streaming, or NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro for Plex, local files, advanced audio passthrough and gaming. Apple TV 4K remains the better choice if performance, Apple integration and a relatively uncluttered interface matter more than price.

A cheap streaming stick can replace Apple TV’s apps, but it may not replace its speed, storage, remote experience, gaming capability, ecosystem integration or relatively clean home screen. Decide which of those actually matters before comparing prices.

What Apple TV 4K still does well
Apple’s current baseline is the third-generation Apple TV 4K. It uses the A15 Bionic chip, supports 4K Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos and HDMI-CEC, and comes with 64GB or 128GB of storage. The 128GB version adds Ethernet and Thread networking. Apple lists the HDMI cable separately on its purchase page.
Apple TV is still difficult to beat for iPhone households that use AirPlay, HomeKit, Apple Photos, Apple Music, Apple Fitness+, Apple Arcade or FaceTime on the television. App performance is also a major part of the experience: a device can support the same streaming services while feeling slower, less responsive or more cluttered.
Its weaknesses are equally clear. The box is expensive compared with streaming sticks, Apple’s ecosystem is less useful in Android or Alexa households, and buyers who only watch a few mainstream services may not need its extra performance.
Best overall: Google TV Streamer (4K)
Google TV Streamer is the strongest balance of price, modern features and connectivity. Google’s specifications list an official U.S. price of $99.99, 32GB of storage, 4GB of memory, HDMI 2.1, Gigabit Ethernet and 4K HDR output at up to 60 frames per second. It is the clearest choice for Android phone users and homes built around Google Home or Nest. Matter support and a built-in Thread border router also make it more useful as part of a current smart-home setup than a basic streaming stick.

Why choose it over Apple TV?
- It costs substantially less than a premium Apple TV purchase when bought at its listed official price.
- It includes Gigabit Ethernet rather than requiring an adapter.
- Its 32GB storage is generous for a mainstream streamer.
- It supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10+, which is useful when different televisions and services in a household use different HDR standards.
- It fits naturally into Google Home and Android environments.
The trade-off is that it is not an Apple TV-class gaming box, and its content-aggregation interface may feel more commercially oriented than Apple’s hardware-led experience. Best for simplicity: Roku Ultra
Roku Ultra is the best fit for viewers who want a conventional streaming interface, a broad selection of mainstream apps and minimal setup complexity. Roku describes the current Ultra as its fastest streaming player and lists Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support.
The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro, second edition, and Bluetooth headphone mode are useful household features. Private listening can be especially practical when one person is watching late at night. Roku Ultra also supports AirPlay and HomeKit, as well as Google Home and Alexa, so it is more ecosystem-neutral than many alternatives.
Roku’s platform is also strong for free and live ad-supported content through The Roku Channel. That can help cord-cutters, although it means the home experience includes platform merchandising and recommendations. Roku is not an Apple-style blank canvas, and readers who strongly dislike promotional content should inspect the current interface before buying.
Choose Roku Ultra instead of Google TV Streamer when straightforward navigation and cross-platform compatibility matter more than smart-home features, storage or Android integration. Choose Google instead when Gigabit networking and Google Home are central requirements.

Best budget ecosystem choice: Amazon Fire TV
Fire TV is the natural alternative for households with Echo speakers, Alexa routines, Prime Video subscriptions or other Amazon smart-home products. It supports voice control for compatible televisions, receivers and soundbars, and current 4K models provide strong HDR and codec support.
Fire TV Stick 4K Plus
Amazon’s current device specifications list the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus as a 2025 model with Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos and 4K Ultra HD support. Because similarly named Fire TV models have different specifications, verify the live U.S. product listing for current price, storage, memory and availability before purchasing.
Fire TV Stick 4K Max, 2nd Gen
The Fire TV Stick 4K Max, 2nd Gen is a 2023 model running Fire OS 8 on an Android 11 base. Amazon lists 16GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, a quad-core processor up to 2.0GHz, Wi-Fi 6E, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and support for AV1, HEVC, VP9 and H.264. Its product specifications are available on Amazon’s developer site.
Max is attractive when it is discounted and when 16GB storage or Wi-Fi 6E matters. It is less attractive to buyers who need built-in Ethernet, USB storage or a quiet, app-first interface. Ethernet requires an external adapter, and Amazon lists 10/100Mbps Ethernet for the adapter arrangement.
The Fire TV interface trade-off
Fire TV’s hardware and Alexa integration can be excellent value, but the interface is heavily focused on content discovery, recommendations, sponsored material and Amazon’s commercial ecosystem. That is not automatically bad: it can make live, free and Prime content easy to find. It is a poor fit for readers specifically leaving Apple TV because they dislike platform promotion.

Best for Plex, local files and advanced home theater: NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro
NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro remains the specialist choice for serious local-media users. NVIDIA lists a Tegra X1+ processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, two USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, Plex Media Server, Android TV with Chromecast built in, AI-enhanced upscaling and GeForce NOW support.
Its most important advantage over ordinary streaming sticks is audio and file flexibility. NVIDIA explicitly lists Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and DTS-HD passthrough, in addition to Dolby Vision, HDR10 and Dolby Atmos. That makes SHIELD relevant to Plex, Kodi and local-remux users with an AV receiver or soundbar that can decode advanced formats.
SHIELD Pro is not automatically the best home-theater streamer for everyone. Streaming-app Atmos is supported across several modern platforms when the app, title, subscription, television and audio equipment all cooperate. SHIELD’s distinction is local-file passthrough, USB expansion and server functionality.

That is a lot for a casual Netflix viewer, especially because the current model is older hardware running Android 11. Buy it for its specialized capabilities, not because it is the newest or fastest general-purpose streamer.
Plex and Jellyfin users should also avoid assuming that every file will direct-play. The codec, container, subtitles, bitrate, server hardware and client application determine whether transcoding is required.

- Best overall non-Apple replacement: Google TV Streamer (4K), for its balance of price, storage, Ethernet, HDR support and Google smart-home features.
- Best for simple menus: Roku Ultra, especially for households that want a familiar grid of apps and private listening.
- Best for Android and Google Home: Google TV Streamer.

Picture and audio compatibility: the traps
A streamer’s format list does not guarantee that every service will deliver that format. Dolby Vision or HDR10+ also requires a compatible television, HDMI port, content title, app, subscription tier and correct television settings. Some older displays require an enhanced or deep-color HDMI mode to be enabled manually.
Audio needs the same care. “Dolby Atmos support” usually means Atmos delivered by a compatible streaming app, often using Dolby Digital Plus. It is not the same as lossless Dolby TrueHD passthrough from a local file. SHIELD TV Pro is the standout here because NVIDIA explicitly documents TrueHD, DTS-HD and DTS:X passthrough.

Check whether your receiver or soundbar supports the required format and whether your television’s ARC or eARC connection can pass it through. A device can support a format that your HDMI chain cannot deliver.
What to check before replacing Apple TV
- List essential apps. Confirm regional broadcasters, sports services, VPN tools, niche apps and local-media players on the exact device.
- Check the TV. Confirm 4K resolution, Dolby Vision or HDR10+ compatibility, HDMI capabilities and required picture settings.
- Check the audio chain. Identify whether you need streaming Atmos or lossless local-file passthrough.
- Decide whether Ethernet is essential. Google TV Streamer and SHIELD Pro include Gigabit Ethernet; Fire TV sticks generally need an adapter.
- Calculate the real cost. Include an HDMI cable where one is not supplied, a Fire TV Ethernet adapter, SHIELD USB storage and any replacement remote or controller.
- Choose the interface you can tolerate. Roku, Google TV and Fire TV all emphasize recommendations to varying degrees. Compare that with Apple TV’s cleaner, more hardware-focused presentation.
- Check the ecosystem. AirPlay and HomeKit features do not fully reproduce Apple Photos, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, FaceTime or iPhone continuity on another platform.
- Separate sale price from normal price. Fire TV and Roku pricing changes frequently around major sales. Treat discounts as temporary, not as permanent MSRP.
Do you need a replacement at all?
If your television already has responsive, supported apps and you mainly watch Netflix, YouTube, Hulu or Disney+, a new box may not produce a meaningful improvement. A separate streamer is most useful when the TV software is slow or unsupported, when you need a specific HDR or audio format, when you want Ethernet, or when local-media and gaming features justify the purchase.
A compatible PlayStation or Xbox can also handle mainstream streaming and gaming, but it uses more power and offers a less convenient remote-first experience. It is sensible when you already own the console; buying one only for streaming is usually poor value. Built-in TV platforms are similarly convenient but vary considerably in speed, privacy controls, app availability and update support.
Final recommendation
Buy the Google TV Streamer (4K) for the best balance of modern features and cost. Choose Roku Ultra if ease of navigation and broad household compatibility are more important than Google smart-home integration. Choose an exact, verified Fire TV model for Alexa and low-cost 4K streaming, accepting the commercial-heavy interface. Choose NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro only when Plex, local files, USB storage, advanced audio passthrough or gaming justify its higher price and older platform.
