For a straightforward cutout and background replacement, start with CapCut: its documented workflow offers automatic removal as well as chroma key for green- or blue-screen footage. Canva is a natural fit for creators already designing in its templates, while Runway is aimed at prompt-led changes to a scene or backdrop. These are workflow recommendations based on official feature descriptions, not a head-to-head test of output quality.
You can remove a video background without a green screen: CapCut and Canva both document automatic removal. The right choice depends on whether you want a quick cutout, a designed composition, or a generative scene change.

How to choose by the job
Choose CapCut for a fast cutout or chroma key
CapCut documents both automatic removal and a separate chroma-key route. Use Auto removal when you have ordinary footage and do not have a green screen; choose chroma key when the clip was deliberately shot against a green or blue background. It also documents replacement with a solid color, image, or video.

Choose Canva for a designed composition
Canva combines background removal with templates, its media library, and a video editor. That makes it a practical fit if the next step is adding branded layouts or other designed elements in Canva. Its feature page identifies the remover as a Canva Pro feature, so check current access and subscription terms for your region.
Choose Runway for a prompted scene change
Runway Edit Studio is described as a way to alter existing traditional or generated footage using prompts. That differs from simply isolating a subject and placing a layer behind it: you can describe a new backdrop or other targeted change, and optionally supply a reference image. Runway’s help page currently identifies Single edit as available and Multi-edit and Expand as coming soon; confirm the current mode and plan details before relying on them.

How to remove and replace a background
CapCut desktop
- Import the clip into CapCut.
- Open Video, choose Remove BG, then select Auto removal.
- Choose an AI-generated or library background and arrange it behind the isolated subject.
- Use the custom-removal controls if an area needs additional attention.
- Review the whole clip, especially subject edges and movement, before exporting.
CapCut in a browser
- Import the clip.
- Open Smart tools and choose Remove background.
- Select Auto removal for ordinary footage. For green- or blue-screen footage, select Chroma key and choose the key color.
- Place a color, image, or video behind the subject, then review the full clip before exporting.
Interface labels and feature availability may vary by region or product version; check CapCut’s current instructions if a menu is different.
Canva
- Upload a video clip or choose one from Canva’s media library.
- Choose Background Remover to isolate the foreground subject.
- Add a replacement image, video, template, or other design elements behind the subject.
- Make final design adjustments, review the clip, and download it as an MP4.
Canva describes detecting and masking the foreground across frames, then making the background transparent. The remover is presented as a Pro feature.

Runway Edit Studio
- Open Edit Studio and select a clear keyframe showing the area to change. For a backdrop or scene change, Runway’s help guidance recommends a wide frame that shows the target clearly.
- Describe the desired change in a prompt. Add a reference image if it would help specify the intended look.
- Preview the image edit, then generate the change across the footage.
- Review the resulting sequence. Runway describes sequences up to 30 seconds at 1080p; confirm current limits and paid-plan access before starting.
What to inspect before exporting
Background removal creates a composite, not just a new backdrop. Check the result across the whole clip rather than judging a single still frame.
- Look at the subject’s outline, including hair, hands, and moving objects, for missed or removed areas.
- Watch for changes in the mask as the subject moves or the camera angle changes.
- Check that the replacement background is positioned and scaled as intended, and that the subject looks plausible against it.
- Play the exported video, not only the editor preview, to confirm the finished composition looks right.

Common problems and what to try
- The subject is not isolated cleanly: In CapCut, try custom-removal controls on areas that need attention, then inspect the full clip again. If the footage was shot against a green or blue screen, use the distinct chroma-key option and select its key color.
- The edit looks acceptable on one frame but not throughout: Review movement across the entire clip. For Runway’s prompt workflow, start from a clear keyframe that shows the intended target, following its guidance for scene changes.
- You cannot find the feature or an option is unavailable: Check the product’s current regional availability and your plan. CapCut advises checking free-tier inclusions; Canva presents its remover as a Pro feature; Runway says Edit Studio/Aleph 2.0 are available on paid plans.
- You want to change the scene, not just put a layer behind a cutout: Runway is the most directly positioned of these three for prompt-led scene changes. Confirm its current mode availability and stated sequence limits before building a workflow around it.
