Yes—Max, formerly HBO Max, is available on supported Roku TVs, streaming sticks and players in the United States. You can subscribe directly through Max, pay through Roku, subscribe through The Roku Channel, or use Max access supplied by another participating provider.
For most viewers, subscribing directly at Max.com is the least confusing option because Max manages the account, payment and support. Roku billing is convenient for on-TV signup, while The Roku Channel and third-party bundles make sense when you already use those services. The important distinction is that installing the Max app does not determine who bills you.

Max lists The Roku Channel, Hulu-related offerings, Prime Video Channels, Sling TV, YouTube TV and numerous television, internet and mobile providers among its U.S. distribution routes. Availability and account mechanics can change, so confirm the provider’s current terms before subscribing.

1. Subscribe directly through Max.com
This is usually the best choice if you want Max to control your subscription and expect to watch on Roku, phones, tablets, computers and other supported devices.

- Open the Roku home screen and select Store.
- Select Apps and search for Max.
- Select the official Max app and choose Add app.
- Open Max and select Sign In.
- Enter the email address and password for your Max account, or complete the activation flow shown on screen.
If you have not subscribed, sign up at Max.com, choose a plan and add payment information before signing in on Roku. A legacy HBO Max account may still be used when returning subscribers sign in or rejoin.
Advantages: Max handles billing, refunds, cancellation and account support. It is also the clearest option when you use several brands of streaming device.
Trade-off: the subscription will not automatically be managed as a Roku subscription, and a subscription bought through another provider may require a different login or activation process.
2. Subscribe through Roku billing
Roku billing is useful if you already have a payment method saved to your Roku account and want to subscribe from the television.
- Open the Roku Store.
- Search for and open the Max app.
- Choose the subscription option displayed on screen.
- Select a plan and confirm the purchase through Roku.
- Complete any Max account-creation or password step shown during signup.
- Open Max and begin watching.
Roku may require an account PIN for purchases. The exact labels can vary by Roku device and software version.
Who manages a Roku-billed Max subscription?
If Roku billed the purchase, manage it through my.roku.com/subscriptions. A Max-billed subscription is managed by Max, while a bundle or provider subscription is managed by that provider. Roku says subscriptions purchased directly from a streaming service generally cannot be cancelled from Roku.
Roku billing is convenient, but promotions, plan changes, refunds and cancellation rules may differ from Max.com. Keep the email address and password created during signup.

3. Subscribe through The Roku Channel
The Roku Channel is another route for viewers who want premium subscriptions consolidated inside the Roku ecosystem. Open The Roku Channel, search for Max or find its premium-subscription listing, review the offer and confirm the purchase with your Roku account.
After signup, follow the on-screen instructions for viewing. Depending on the product flow, authentication may use your Roku account, a linked provider account or a Max account created during the transaction. Do not assume this route is identical to a direct Max subscription.
The Roku Channel can be convenient if you already use it for other premium services. However, check where the subscription appears, who bills it and which account controls cancellation before completing the purchase.

You may already receive Max through Hulu, a Disney+/Hulu/Max bundle, Prime Video Channels, Sling TV, YouTube TV, or a participating cable, internet, mobile or television provider.
The access method depends on the provider:
- Provider supplies Max credentials: install the Max app on Roku and sign in with the activated Max account.
- Provider hosts Max in its own app: install and use that provider’s Roku app instead.
- Activation is required: complete the provider’s activation or account-linking process before signing in to Max.
- Provider authentication is required: select the provider in Max and use the provider’s login details.
Do not assume every provider includes the same plan tier, simultaneous-stream limit, 4K access, Dolby Atmos, sports content or device support. Cancellation normally goes through the provider that bills you.

Prices, taxes, plan names, promotions and provider rates can change. Basic with Ads is the lowest-cost choice. Standard suits viewers who want an ad-free plan and downloads. Premium is the relevant choice for 4K and Dolby Atmos, subject to title, device, display, connection and audio-system support.
Provider-billed plans may not offer exactly the same features as plans bought directly from Max. Check the final price and renewal terms before paying.
How to add Max to a Roku device
Roku’s standard installation path is Home > Store > Apps. Search for Max, select the official app and choose Add app or the displayed purchase option.
You can also add the app through the Roku Channel Store website or the Roku mobile app. If an app added remotely does not appear, use Settings > System > System update > Check now.
Search for Max, not only “HBO Max.” HBO Max is the former name, although Roku support pages and older searches may still use it.

How to sign in and activate Max
- Open Max on Roku.
- Select Sign In.
- Enter the Max email and password associated with the subscription.
- If Max displays an activation code or QR flow, complete the instructions on a phone or computer.
- Return to Roku and start playback.
The exact activation screen can change. If you subscribed through Roku or another provider, use the credentials and activation method associated with that biller rather than automatically using your Roku password.
Find out who bills your Max subscription
On a phone, tablet or computer, check Profile > Subscription in Max. On a TV device, check Settings > Subscription. Max generally identifies the subscription provider there.

Also check the receipt in your email and Roku’s subscription-management page. The billing company—not the app installed on your Roku—determines where you cancel, request refunds and change plans.

The Max app does not appear
- Search for Max, not only HBO Max.
- Restart the Roku.
- Check Settings > System > System update > Check now.
- Confirm the Roku is connected to the internet and linked to the correct Roku account.
- Check Max’s current supported-device list.
- If the device is too old or unsupported, use a newer Roku or another supported platform.
Max availability depends on country, device model and software support. Not every Roku player or Roku TV is guaranteed to support the current app.

First confirm that other Roku apps can stream. Then test the connection, restart the Roku and network equipment, install available updates, sign out and back in, and check for a Max service outage. Removing and reinstalling the app may clear local app data, but it cannot fix a billing, account, provider-authentication or service-wide problem.
The sign-in code fails or Max keeps asking you to sign in
Likely causes include using Roku credentials instead of Max credentials, incomplete provider activation, multiple Max accounts, an expired subscription or a Roku-billed account with a separate password.
- Identify who bills the subscription.
- Use the Max email associated with that subscription.
- Reset the Max password if necessary.
- Complete the provider activation process if applicable.
- Contact the correct biller if the subscription is not recognized.
Max asks you to subscribe again
This usually means the app is signed into the wrong Max account or the provider activation was not completed. Check the billing provider, sign out, use the correct email and complete the provider’s linking instructions. Do not buy a second subscription until you confirm the first one’s status.
Playback buffers
Test another streaming app, restart the Roku and router, check for network congestion and try Max on another supported device. A weak connection, outdated software, account issue or Max service problem can all produce similar symptoms.

4K does not appear
Confirm that you have Premium, the Roku model and TV support 4K, the title is offered in 4K, the display connection is suitable and the network can sustain the stream. Dolby Atmos additionally requires compatible audio equipment.

Max automatically selects the highest available quality based on the device, plan, title and connection; it does not provide a manual resolution selector. Not every title is available in 4K, HDR or Dolby Atmos.
You want to cancel
Cancel with the billing entity:
- Max.com: use Max account settings.
- Roku: use Roku subscription management.
- Hulu, Prime Video Channels, Sling, YouTube TV, cable, internet or mobile provider: cancel through that provider.
Deleting the Max app, signing out or removing the channel does not cancel a paid subscription.
Using Max on multiple Roku devices
Roku recommends linking multiple devices to one Roku account when a household wants shared apps, purchases, PIN settings and preferences. Adding or removing an app on one linked device can affect other devices on that account.

Choose a direct Max subscription if you want the clearest account ownership and easiest support. Choose Roku billing for convenient on-TV signup, The Roku Channel if you already manage premium subscriptions there, or an existing provider when Max is part of a bundle you already want. Whichever route you choose, record who bills you—because that determines activation, cancellation, refunds and plan changes.

Only if that model and its software still meet Max’s current support requirements. Check Max’s supported-device list rather than relying on a universal Roku model cutoff.
Can I watch Max through The Roku Channel?
