Set up a local Mac encoder workflow
This is the decision path for broadcasting prerecorded material through a local encoder; exact OBS source menus and VLC playlist steps depend on current software behavior and are not established here.
- Check the Mac and OBS version. Confirm the current OBS release supports your macOS version and that your chosen media source can play the files and repeat them as intended.
- Prepare the content. Make the video files accessible to the Mac and test playback, looping and any playlist transitions before scheduling a continuous broadcast. Do not assume that pasting a YouTube playlist URL into OBS is an officially supported method.
- Create or select a YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s live-streaming controls, obtain the stream’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. Select an ingest protocol supported by your encoder and the YouTube stream configuration, then verify the preview and audio before going live. YouTube documents RTMP setup and also offers HLS ingestion.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Confirm YouTube receives the feed and watch for playback, audio and connection problems. For a local 24/7 operation, the Mac, files, power and network must remain available; this workflow does not itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
RTMP, HLS and stream delay
YouTube documents RTMP setup as well as HLS ingestion. HLS is a protocol choice, not a playlist manager: YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP and requires specific segment and rolling-playlist settings. Use HLS only when your encoder and stream configuration meet YouTube’s documented requirements; do not assume that choosing HLS will make a local playlist loop correctly.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated duration, so do not plan on the entire uninterrupted stream being saved as one replay under this rule. If a complete replay matters, arrange separate recordings or broadcasts and confirm current YouTube archive behavior for your channel.
Rights and channel suitability
Before broadcasting, confirm you have permission to use every video, music track and other element in the stream. A playlist being available on YouTube does not, by itself, establish permission to rebroadcast it as a live stream. Also consider whether the stream provides original value for your channel: the technical ability to loop a video does not determine how YouTube will assess a channel’s content or monetization eligibility.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key, and that the selected protocol matches the stream configuration.
- The video stops or a playlist item fails: Check that the media remains accessible and playable on the Mac, and verify looping and playlist behavior with your actual files and software versions.
- The stream drops when you leave: A local encoder requires the Mac and its power and network connection to remain available. A cloud workflow moves processing off the home computer, but individual providers’ reliability is not independently established by their listings.
- The stream is delayed: HLS has higher latency than RTMP according to YouTube. Check the selected ingestion protocol and its required configuration.
- You expect one full-day replay: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours; a 24/7 broadcast is longer.
