To reduce CPU use while looping a video in OBS, first find out whether the load is coming from video decoding, stream encoding, or scene rendering. In the video’s Media Source properties, enable Loop; then test Use hardware decoding when available. If OBS is encoding with x264 and encoding load is high, try a compatible hardware encoder such as NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync. Simplify resource-heavy scenes if rendering is the problem. These changes address different workloads, and none guarantees a particular CPU reduction on every computer.
Identify what is using the CPU
Looping a file, encoding the outgoing stream, and rendering the OBS scene are separate jobs. A high CPU reading does not by itself show that the loop is the cause. OBS says performance requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Make one change at a time and compare CPU load and playback stability on your own system.
- Playback and decoding: OBS reads and decodes the video file. The Media Source offers an optional hardware-decoding setting.
- Stream encoding: OBS compresses the composed video for YouTube. x264 uses software encoding; compatible hardware encoders can shift encoding work to a specialized GPU component.
- Scene rendering: OBS composes sources such as browser overlays, images, and videos. A complex scene or resource-intensive browser sources can affect performance.
Set up the video loop and test decoding
- Add or select the local video source. In the OBS scene, add a Media Source for the video file, or select the existing source and open its properties.
- Enable the loop. In the Media Source properties, check Loop. OBS will replay the file when playback completes. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Test hardware decoding separately. If your GPU has a decoder suitable for the file, enable Use hardware decoding when available in the source properties. Compare CPU use and check for smooth playback before and after; the setting is optional and its effect depends on the file and hardware.
Hardware decoding applies to reading the clip. It does not switch the encoder used for the outgoing YouTube stream.
Choose an encoder for the outgoing stream
If OBS is using x264 and the encoding workload is high, check whether your system offers a compatible hardware encoder. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Availability depends on your operating system and hardware; older encoder generations may involve a quality trade-off.

| Encoder option | When to consider it | Compatibility notes |
|---|---|---|
| x264 | Use it if software encoding is appropriate for your system and quality needs. | Uses the CPU for encoding; performance depends on the rest of the workload. |
| NVIDIA NVENC | Consider it if your system has a supported NVIDIA encoder. | OBS lists support on qualifying Windows and Linux systems. |
| AMD AMF | Consider it if your system has a supported AMD encoder. | OBS lists support on qualifying Windows and Linux GPUs. |
| Intel Quick Sync | Consider it if your Intel graphics hardware supports it. | OBS lists support for qualifying hardware on Windows and Linux. |
| Apple VideoToolbox | Consider it on a compatible Apple system. | Platform-specific streaming limitations apply. |
In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the encoder selected for streaming. If you change it, choose a hardware option that your system actually supports, then test the output quality and stream stability at the bitrate you plan to use. OBS’s Hardware Encoding documentation describes the encoder families and platform qualifications. OBS also recommends using current GPU drivers.
Reduce the cost of scene rendering
If playback and encoding changes do not address the problem, simplify the active scene. OBS notes that browser sources can use substantial resources, and scene composition relies on GPU resources. Try these adjustments one at a time:

- Remove browser sources you do not need in the live scene, or reduce their number and dimensions.
- For static overlays, use image sources rather than a browser source where that meets your needs.
- Use a Media Source or VLC Source for video and audio rather than a more complex setup when suitable.
- Keep the scene focused on the sources needed for the stream.

Keep YouTube’s ingest settings valid
Changing an OBS performance setting does not remove YouTube’s ingest requirements. Choose settings for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, and use a bitrate your connection can sustain. YouTube’s live encoder guidance currently recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

| Example from YouTube’s current guidance | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not CPU-saving targets. Raising bitrate is not a remedy for high CPU use. YouTube’s guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS ingest, video codecs and settings; consult Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the recommendations applicable to your chosen output.
Test before relying on the stream
- Make a short test with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast; a static or silent clip may not represent the real workload.
- After each change, compare CPU use and watch for stuttering, dropped frames, audio/video sync problems, or playback interruptions.
- Confirm the stream is healthy in YouTube’s live controls while testing. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health.
- If you are unsure which settings your system can handle, run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard in OBS. OBS says requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; generally retain defaults unless you have a reason to adjust them.
OBS’s System Requirements guidance explains why demands vary, and its OBS Studio Overview Guide includes general setup and testing advice.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| CPU remains high with the loop playing | Encoding or decoding may be responsible; CPU load alone does not identify the cause. | Check whether Output uses x264; try a supported hardware encoder if available. Separately test the Media Source hardware-decoding option. |
| Video playback stutters after enabling hardware decoding | The decoder, file format, or system may not work well with that option. | Compare playback with the option off and on. Keep the setting that gives stable playback on your system. |
| CPU or rendering load stays high after changing encoders | Scene composition or browser sources may be contributing. | Simplify the active scene, reduce browser-source count or dimensions, and use simpler source types for static assets. |
| The stream looks poor or YouTube reports an ingest issue | Output settings may not match YouTube’s recommendations or the connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. | Check codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval, and the bitrate recommendation for your output. Test the connection and stream before going live. |
| Performance changes from one test to another | The tests may not have equivalent video motion, audio, or scene activity. | Repeat tests with similar content and change only one setting at a time. |
